14 August, 2016

Fe 16
Pride of place this week goes to our Fe 16 hurlers who were crowned Cork County Premier 1 Champions for the first time since 2006 after a hard fought win over Na Piarsaigh before a fine crowd at Kilbarry (Delanys GAA) last Monday night. Our win was secured by a superb first half performance, culminating in two late goals to see us turn into half time 2-11 to 0-6 in front. We had to face a strong wind in the second half and defensively we had to up our game. We got our third goal in the final minute of the game as Na Piarsaigh pushed us all the way. We had superb performers throughout with great displays from Tommy O Connell, Kian Farmer, Ciaran Evans & Arthur Nganou.
We had to weather the early storm of Na Piarsaigh pressure in the second half and two Na Piarsaigh goals inside the first fifteen minutes of the second half meant "Game On" in a big way as we settled into the final quarter on a scoreline of 2-8 to 2-13. We finished the stronger though and deservedly won through in the end by 3-16 to 2-09.

This was a great win for this team of players who mostly have been together for the last ten years. Even though we have won a lot over the years in both hurling & football, this was the very first County Hurling Championship for this team and boy it showed in the celebrations. A great win for our team and for our Club.
Joint Team Captains, Cormac O Brien and Kevin Finn accepted the trophy on behalf of the team.

Ladies Football
East Cork Junior B Final Replay Midleton 2-14 v Fermoy 3-7
It was nail biting stuff but we held out and were crowned East Cork Junior B Champions. We were up eight points in the first half but only went in at half time one point up. We turned  it around and went another eight points up in the second half, only for Fermoy to pull it back to a draw. In the last ten minutes we found an inner resolve and pulled it out of the bag to win by four points.
Scorers : Lisa Ahern 1-0, Dionne Carroll 1-0, Molly Beausang 0-2, Claire O'Brien 0-4, Ciara McGrath 0-4, Orlagh Farmer 0-3 & Abby Quirke 0-1.

The Cork Ladies Football Development Camp in Midleton this week was a great success. This is the first year running the camp, coordinated by Orlagh Farmer and members of the Cork Senior & Minor Ladies Football panels. A great week of ladies football with close to 100 girls attending from Midleton Ladies Club and surrounding East Cork clubs (Carrigtwohill, Aghada, Inch Rovers, Lisgoold & Shanagarry). It was also great to see a bus load of girls from the newly formed St Nicks Ladies Football Club in the city travel down to the camp for the week. The girls were coached by the Cork Senior (Orlagh Farmer, Maire Ambrose, Shauna Cronin, Kate Lenaghan) & Cork Minor Ladies Footballers (Niamh Murphy, Sorcha Phelan, Mairead O Sullivan & Cork Minor Captain, Laura Cleary). The girls really enjoyed the 4 day camp and on the last day each girl was delighted to receive a Supervalu Cork Ladies Football Jersey! Thanks also to Hurley's SuperValu Midleton for sponsoring the girls goodie bags on the last day! (Submitted by Orlagh Farmer).

Training continues in Midleton Rugby Club. Our U8 group will return from their short break from 6.30 to 7.30 pm, while all other age groups will train from 7-8pm.

Juvenile

Fe 7
Our young footballers had a great time last Saturday at the well run Monster Blitz held in Aghada. Well done to all our lads and to Aghada for their hospitality.

Fe 10
We resumed this week after a short break with hurling, the opposition Aghada ,  played on home ground. Twenty seven young magpies lined out in three teams, both sides were evenly matched, each player fought for every ball, with a high degree of commitment and skill on display. After an hour of fine entertainment we came out on top on an aggregate score.  Thanks to our young referees and to Aghada for a fine sporting game.  Next match is a football game away to Bandon. Our players and mentors would like to wish a speedy recover to team mate Paddy Walsh following his recent mishap. Magpies Abu !

Fe 13
In preparation for our upcoming hurling semi-final we had a run out with the FE 14’s on Wednesday night in Pairc Ui Clonmult. We had a strong turnout of players. This was a good game from start to finish. Both sets of players would have got a lot from this game.
The Fe 14s started strongly and registered  a number of scores before we found our rhythm . Niall Corcoran, Ciarmhac Smyth, Liam McGrath and Neil Fitzgerald held a strong line of defence during the first 20 minute period. Cian Murray had a strong influence from midfield. Kane Rowlands, Darragh Codd, Phelim Magan and Ben O’Neill were obstreperous in attack. At the end of the first period the Fe 14’s held a slender lead.
We made a number of changes for the second period of twenty minutes. The introduction of Roan Spillane, Kelvin Barry and Ronan Gies gave us an added impetus. Darragh McCarthy and Alex Quirke were finding scores a little easier to come by. This second period produced some tough, fair and honest hurling. The Fe 14’s held onto their lead entering the third period of 20 minutes. The last period of twenty minutes saw no drop in intensity. Brion Saunderson, Fintan Greenwod continued to influence the game. At the final whistle both panels had given their all and had contributed to a most enjoyable game of hurling.
Panel: B Saunderson, L McGrath, F Greenwood, N Fitzgerald, E McCarthy, N Corcoran, C Smyth, A Quirke, C Murray, D Codd, D McCarthy, J Condon, K Rowlands, P Magan (1-00), B. O’Neill, R Spillane, K Barry & R Gies.

Hurling Challenge v Ballygunner
Dave Codd organised a challenge game in Waterford city for our hurlers last Sunday 14th. It was our first trip away this year. The weather was kind and a cup of tea and sandwich post-match helped add to the enjoyment of the day.
