Jennifer Hayes, Principal Psychologist, HSE Primary Care Cork North points out that stress is a normal part of life with virtually everybody being affected at some point in their lives. “It is only a matter of time before life deals a blow and when stress levels rise or get out of control it feels rotten and can badly affect every aspect of a person’s life. Recent flooding in Midleton and in other areas in Cork is just one example of how something unexpected in life can have such stressful consequences for people”.
This course is free and is open to everybody who is currently experiencing stress or those who are just interested in learning how to manage stress better and therefore improve their quality of life.
Organisers want to get word out to everybody in Cork City and County that this course is available, free and open to everybody whether they are GAA members or not. Life is never easy and people face all sorts of challenges such as the impact of flooding, financial problems, stress at work, day to day hassles, family problems, illness, exams, immigration and so forth. This course is designed to teach people practical skills that they can use to reduce the stress that these or other life challenges generate.
The Cork Beats Stress initiative with its delivery of the Stress Control programme has already been delivered in Midleton through the GAA, St. Finbarr’s GAA Togher, and in Youghal GAA. This initiative has generated exceptional results and has made a strong, positive impact on people’s emotional wellbeing. Approximately, 550 people have already benefitted from the three courses already run. Results show that it was very effective in giving people the skills and the know how to manage stress in their lives more effectively. Those who completed the course experienced reduced stress levels, and more confidence in facing and dealing with the stressors in their lives. Participants reported feeling better able to connect with others and a significant improvement in their overall quality of life. The Cork Beats Stress initiative won the prestigious Health Management Institute Award in 2014.
The classes are very easy to follow and all participants are given booklets with explanations on how to control stress at the end of each class so that people can read them at their own pace. It is lecture format and participants are not asked to talk about their problems or asked any personal questions. The course is open to anyone over the age of 18 from all walks of life. You do not have to be a GAA member to attend. Partners and friends of people experiencing stress are also more than welcome as long as they register in advance.
