Midleton GAA news 15th August

15 August, 2011

Senior Hurling Championship
After many weeks of no activity our senior hurlers were back in championship action against Douglas on Sunday last in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
We got off to a great start with early scores from Paul Haughney, Conor Lehane and Sean Hennessy to put us 1.04 to no score after ten minutes. However Douglas eventually got scores on the board after we squandered some chances. We led at halftime by 1.08 to 0.04 having played with the aid of a strong wind.
Both sides traded points throughout the first quarter of the second half. Our backs were very much on top and were supplying plenty of ball to our forwards but we were unable to pull away from them.
The result was sealed however when a long clearance out of our defence carried over the Douglas rear guard and the on rushing Patrick White on as a sub for Stephen Moore soloed through and buried the ball in the back of the net. We drove on very much from there and further goals from Luke O’Farrell and Conor Lehane added to by fine points from Hennessy, Haughney and Cormac Walsh closed out the game. Final score Midleton 4.16 v Douglas 1.11. Well done to all involved.
We now face Ballymartle in the quarter final next Sunday 21st in Pairc ui Chaoimh at 2.30pm

Fe 9
On Saturday 13th August, Midleton’s Fe 9s played Carrigtwohill in the 9 aside league. Midleton had 9 players with them meaning that everyone played a full game of three sections. The game was level after the first third but in the latter two thirds Midleton pulled away and were in control of the game at most stages. Carrigtwohill gave a good performance and Midleton needed to give their all in order to keep on top. Well played all who were there and many thanks to Carrigtwohill for hosting the game and providing great referees.
Fe 10
On Wednesday 10th August one half of the Midleton Fe 10 squad headed to Na Pairsaigh for a non score league game.
Midleton travelled with 12 players for what was due to be an 11 a side game. Unfortunately Na Pairsaigh could only field 10 which meant we had to use a further substitute than planned.
In the three segment game our lads started the stronger and were well on top in the first segment. Na Pairsaigh along with the rain came strong in the second segment and brought the game level. The third segment was an even challenge and saw both teams finishing level.
Midleton played very well overall and are growing in stature with every game played.
Also on Wednesday 10th the second half of the Fe 10 squad made their way to St Vincents for the same league.
This time Midleton had 10 players and the format of the match was the same.
In what was overall an even enough spectacle St Vincents shaded the match on what was a wet and windy night. Midletons players were well up for the match and scored some lovely points throughout the game.
Thanks to all who turned up on such a rainy night.

On Saturday 13th August, the Fe 10 team played Carrigtwohill in the same league competition. Both teams fielded 11 players and played three 10 minute segments. Both teams were evenly enough matched but towards the end of the game Midleton proved the stronger with two late goals. Well done to all.
Training continues throughout the summer and matches will be notified to parents by text.
