In recent times we have received medals from the 1890 Midleton team that won Cork County, Munster and All Ireland championships (the first Cork All Ireland Senior Football title), medals relating to the great Midleton Hurling team of the 1909-17 era that won 2 Cork County senior hurling championships in 1914 & 1916, Willie Campbell’s Munster Railway Cup jersey of 1940/41 (donated by his son Fr. Michael Campbell), Paddy Fitzgerald’s hurley from the 1966 All Ireland hurling final when Cork defeated Kilkenny in one of the most iconic Cork hurling victories, a handwritten membership list from the late 1940’s (received from Tom Mc Carthy formerly of Tom Mac’s pub in the Main Street)) and medals received from the O’Brien family St. Mary’s Terrace which included a 1938 Cork County minor medal and a 1948 Cork intermediate medal won by James O’ Brien and other County medals won by his sons John, Jim and Michael. All of these items are being framed and will be put on permanent display in the Club in the coming weeks. We have also received documents and ‘minute’ books relating to the club’s history going back many decades and these have been filed and will be retained for future historical research. On Saturday we travelled to Ballincollig to take part in a three-team blitz with the host club and Douglas. Over the course of the blitz we each team played four games, so all our players saw plenty of game time. Once again, all our players showed great work ethic, team spirit and determination in all their games. It was very satisfying to see the development of our players and some very high skill levels were on display.

Fe 10
All roads lead to a sun drenched Killeagh last Saturday morning for the 2nd round of hurling matched of the Rebel Óg FE10 series. This eagerly awaited local derby was our first away hurling match of 2018. We had 35 young magpies lining out across 3 teams and each one of them showed fantastic skill and determination. It was especially pleasing to see a huge work rate from all with some impressive hooking and blocking throughout. Thanks to Killeagh for 3 sporting games and also to the 3 ‘not-so-young’ whistlers who referred the matches.

On Saturday under glorious blue skies and sunshine we hosted Sars in the hurling league. We got off to a great start with a point from play from Daniel Garde,  Sars responded with two points followed by a goal which seemed to knock our lads confidence,  we added two more points  before Sars added a second goal and a point this left us with a lot of work to do in the second half,  despite some excellent defending from Paddy Walsh and Yohanis Mehigan and attacking play from Tomas Dunlea and Eoghan Fraser  and the hard working Adam O’ Connor we couldn’t break down the resolute Sars rear guard.  Hitting 11 wides probably didn’t help out cause as we finished the match very strongly but only managed to add one point to leave the score line Midleton 0.04 to Sars 2.09.  Well done to our lads from a good honest effort against an impressive Sars team, we definitely didn’t play to our potential on Saturday and hope to improve our performances in the coming weeks.

Sunday Douglas were the visitors to Clonmult Park, again we started the game with great intent scoring two early points followed by a well taken goal by Callum O’Brien who was
impressive throughout.  With some very impressive play from James Mc Sweeney, Darragh Egan,   Gearoid Cashman and goalie Odran Rabbitte we were in a strong position at half time having played very well against a strong breeze. The second half started brightly for us,  15 mins  in  Jack O’Connell ‘s goal looked to have sealed a victory for us but Douglas kept chipping away with scores of their own with 10 mins to go our lads were visibly tiring but still playing well unfortunately we couldn’t get the scores to put a bit of daylight between the teams with a with the teams level and the time almost up Douglas struck for a goal which proved to be the winning score,  it was a tough defeat for our lads to take as we had played some excellent hurling but lessons were learned.  Ben Fitzpatrick, Odran Dennigan, Daniel Garde, Paddy Walsh also put in fine performances on a day that we deserved more than the result would suggest.  The match finished on a score line of Midleton 3.04 v Douglas 2.04.

We had a Premier 1 hurling game against a hardy Fermoy side away on Wednesday evening. This was a cracking game of hurling from start to finish with Fermoy coming out of traps a bit faster than us scoring three unanswered points within the first five minutes of the game. However the magpies settled and points from Niall Lang, Tadhg O Leary seemed to bring the away side into life. The defense worked tirelessly keeping Fermoy at bay with Adam
Collins, Thomas O Connor and Thomas Dunlea working really hard. Darragh Fitz slotted over two frees to keep us in it. Halftime was 6 points to 4 to the good of the home side.
The second half started just like the first with Fermoy much sharper getting two quick scores but to be fair our lads never gave up both Niall Lang and Evan Mc Grath were lording it at midfield and the forwards started to put the pressure on the Fermoy backs. Darragh Fitzgerald scored a point leaving it 8-5. With little more than two minutes to go Darragh Scanlon was like a man possessed and made a fine run through the centre of defence and scored a sublime goal to draw the game. This was a great game of hurling and the mentors would like to
sincerely thank our Fe12 players who played a huge part on the night James Mac Sweeney, Carthage Cronin, Thomas Dunlea, and Eoin Fraiser. Also thanks to all the parents who
travelled on the night. Our panel was Zach smith Sean Cronin, Adam Collins, Thomas O Connor Thomas Dunlea, Darragh Scanlon, Alex Howard, Niall Lang, Cian Lambe, Darragh Fitzgerald, Oscar Brennan, Eoin Fraser, Tadgh O Leary, Cormac Ryan James Mc Sweeney,  & Carthaigh Cronin.

On Sunday week last we took on Sars at home in what proved to be a very exciting game of hurling. The lads were fierce unlucky in the end with Sars winning by a point on a score line of 3-05 to 3-04. This was a learning curve for the lads, we were on top for most of the game but victory was snatched right at the end. However there was many positive to be taken from this game particularly Tiernan O Connell who had a fantastic game. Oisin Berdassa, Alex Howard, Sean Cronin and Thomas O Connor also battled hard. This was one that was left
behind but it will stand to the lads going forward.
Panel was Darragh Aherne, Darragh Higgins, Connor Williams, Sean Cronin, Thomas O Connor, Eoin Higgins, Alex Howard, Darragh Fitzgerald, Tadhg Bohane, Oscar Brennan, Evan Mcgrath, Zach smith, Cormac Ryan, Tiernan O Connell, Larry Ward, Paul Connolly, Oisin Berdassa, Samuel Morrisey & Liam O Neill.

On Saturday last 21st April we hosted the group stage of the 2018 hurling Feile. The conditions were glorious after all the rain that fell recently; it was great to have dry sunny conditions for these games. There was a lot of work put into getting the pitch ready for these games following weeks of wet weather and as a result it was in great condition.
We were in group 3, with Carrigtwohill and Kilta Og in our half. In the other half of the group there was Youghal, Bride Rovers and Killeagh/Itas. They were playing their games in Pilmore St Itas. The winners of each side of the group would play each other to see who would progress to the Semi Final next week. Each game would be 15 minutes a side.
Our first game was against Carrigtwohill. They got off to a very fast start and we found ourselves behind early on. But we soon settled into the game with a few quick points from play and a goal from David Greene. Once we went into the lead we were able to control the game, but we were never able to take it easy as Carrigtwohill pushed us all the way. In the second half our defence kept Carrigtwohill at bay as they tired their best to get back into the game. We managed to close the game out with a well taken goal from Michael Roe and some points from play and frees. We finished out winning 2.07 to 0.05. This gave us two points .
Next up was a game against Kilta Og. This was their first game, while we only had a ten-minute break. After a tough game against Carrigtwohill we knew that this was going to be a tough battle in very warm conditions. All the lads took on plenty of water and had orange slices during the break in order to rehydrate. We started this game much quicker than our first game and we took an early lead with some lovely scores from play. Kilta then settled into the game with some fine scores themselves, putting them into the lead. But our entire team dug in deep and kept working hard and as a result we scored a deserved goal from Tiarnan Roche to leave us trailing by two points at half time. During the second half the hot conditions took a toll and we ran out of legs. This allowed Kilta Og to keep their lead and stay ahead despite every players best efforts. The team had nothing left in the tank. Kilta Og ran out winning 1.10 to 1.07. This gave the two points to Kilta Og.

Ourselves and Kilta Og now had two points apiece. For us to progress to the final of the group stages we had to hope that Carrigtowhill would beat Kilta. We needed Carrigtwohill to win but we also need them to win by conceding only five points or less. While this game was being played our lads enjoyed some refreshments in the clubhouse. This was provided by the players parents and the club and we would like to thank everyone that provided something and to everyone that helped to distribute all the lovely food and drinks to the players from all teams and all the supporters. We would like to thank the club for helping on the day especially, Mary, Ruth, Tracey, Pat and to all the parents that helped also. It was very much appreciated, and it could not have been done with so many people helping out.
Carrigtwohill beat Kilta Og on a score line of 2.07 to 0.05. This meant that all three teams now had two points on the board and we had to get the calculators out to figure out which team was going to be going to Pilmore. After several minutes of deliberation and a couple of phone calls it transpired that we were the group winners by virtue of scoring on more point that Carrigtwohill. This now meant that we were off to play Bride Rovers, who had won both of their games, in Pilmore. We loaded into cars and the convoy headed off to Pilmore.
The game against Bride Rovers was going to be a tough one as they have proven to be a very strong side at this age throughout the years that we have played against them. The conditions were exactly the same down by the coast as they had been in Midleton. The game started at a furious pace , we came out of the blocks quicker. The first half display for our lads was the best hurling this team has ever produced. Every single player put in a fantastic effort and commitment. Our point scoring was stunning with points coming from all angles and a stunning goal from Dave Cremin. Despite Bride Rovers best efforts that could not get in to the game and we led 1.05 to 0.03 at half time. During the second half our players tired as a result of their efforts in the first half and from earlier in the heat. Bride Rovers were never going to sit back and be beaten without a fight, and they matched our lads scoring display from the first half.  They ran winners on a score line of 1.08 to 1.06.
This was a very disappointing end to the day, but the players should be very proud of level of skill and effort that each one of them put on the day. We can go into the rest of the season confidently building on our displays so far.
Our panel for the day was, Mikey Finn, David Greene, Ben Kenneally, TJ Murphy, Tiarnan Roche, Michael Roe, Odhran Prenter, Brian O’Connell, David Cremin, Fionn Dalton, Cathal Beausang, Dara Scanlon, Alex Moloney, Niall Lang, Tadhg Bohan, Tadgh O’Leary Hayes, Darragh Fitzgerald and Zach Smith & Evan McGrath.
