Midleton Hurling & Football, Ladies Football & Camogie Club NEWS

28 January, 2018

Munster Post Primary Schools Hurling
The Harty Cup hurling semi-finals took place last Saturday afternoon, whilst Midleton CBS had a comprehensive victory over last year’s winners Templemore CBS  in Clonmel by 2-27 to 0-16, CBC were not as fortunate, losing out to Ard Scoil Ris by 0-17 to 2-08 in Mallow.
Well done to Aylwin Kearney and his fellow selectors on a very impressive performance, congrats to our club players Alan Power, Sean O’Sullivan, Sean O’Leary Hayes, Kian Farmer (0-01) & Arthur Nganou (1-01) who were valuable members of the team, panel members included David Scanlon and Gary Carroll (who were both late second half substitutes), Ciaran Evans, Cormac O’Brien, Luke Smith, Samuel Quirke and Ross O’ Regan.
Commiserations to Tommy O’Connell (0-04 frees) and Kevin Finn both members of the CBC team and to unused substitute Andrew Nestor.
Midleton CBS can now look forward with confidence to taking on Ard Scoil Rís in the final on Saturday February 17th. We hope they can bring the title back to Cork for the first time since Midleton CBS last won it in 2006 defeating St Flannan’s in Cashel.

Allianz Hurling  & Football League
Last Saturday evening the Cork hurling and football teams were in action under lights for a historic first time in the recently developed Pairc Ui Chaoimh in an attractive double header.
Before a crowd of over 16,000 the Cork hurlers had a good win over Kilkenny by 1-24 to 0-24 with Conor Lehane giving a man of the match performance scoring 0-11 (0-09 frees).
The hurlers will take on high flying Wexford next Sunday afternoon away @ 2pm.
In the curtain raiser the Cork footballers were defeated by Tipperary by 1-16 to 3-16.

Paddy Dunlea RIP
It was with great sadness last Wednesday morning that we learnt of the passing of Paddy  Dunlea late of the New Cork Rd affectionally known as “Coaksey” after his late father.
Paddy was a lifelong passionate member of our Club where he carried out numerous roles over the years. He began back in the early sixties by “picking stones off the field”, he worked in the Bar, he played minor and junior hurling, was minor hurling Secretary from 1986 to 1988, he was a selector on numerous teams throughout the last few decades most notably with the County winning minor hurling teams of 1984, 87,88 & 89 and the County senior hurling winning team of 1991.
In the historic year of 1983 Paddy was the official hurley man, carrying them on match days and keeping stock at home. When we won three All Ireland Hurling 7 ‘s titles in the eighties Paddy in his pristine Black Mazda 323 would make his way to Kilmacud on each occasion helping out on the sideline.
Whilst working in IMP he was the regular goal keeper on the Inter firm hurling team which also featured his great friend Charlie Mc Allister for whom he officiated as an umpire for many years, he also umpired for Billy Cody on many occasions and of late for Cathal Mc Allister. Recently he acted as an Intermediate hurling selector last year and was involved in the Club Lotto.
Last Friday afternoon a fine crowd gathered to form a guard of honour with many past and present club players, officers and members walking along with the cortege from Paddy’s residence to the Holy Rosary church.
Paddy first and foremost was a great family man and was a very proud husband, father and grandfather and this was reflected by the tremendous tributes paid to him by his family.
His daughters Triona, Christine, Louise, Mary and sons Patrick, Christopher and Pearse read prayers of the faithful and carried his coffin while Patrick and Pearse both spoke eloquently and endearingly about him. At his graveside Charlie (a proud Waterford man) paid him his final tribute with a fantastic and emotional rendition of “The Banks”.
The Executive Committee would like to offer our sincere condolences to his wife Chrissie, sons, daughters, grandchildren, sister, all other relatives and his large circle of friends.

Midleton Accredited GOLD
Our Juvenile Club have been accredited GOLD for the second year in a row in Rebel Ogs Benchmarking 2020 Vision initiative.  The club was notified on Monday last the 22nd of January by Kevin O’ Callaghan Cork Games Development Manager.  The award is
recognition of the great work the Juvenile Club undertakes in the promotion of Gaelic games and it shows that Midleton GAA is at the forefront in Cork at optimising playing standards and maximising participation.
As with all awards they are not easily achieved and require a huge amount of focus, hard work and commitment to obtain.  This Gold Standard puts us among an elite group of clubs that are meeting the criteria for Gold standard.  We would like to acknowledge our GDA Shane Supple for his constant support and pay tribute to our Coaching Officer Martin Mc Sweeney and his team of dedicated coaches for their commitment to coaching the Clubs
Juvenile players and ensuring all criteria for obtaining the Gold standards were met.
As another playing year is set to commence we wish our 84 juvenile coaches and all our juvenile players from our Fe6’s to our Fe16’s a great year.
