Healthy Club PROJECT wins the HMI National Award
Congratulations to Pearse Mc Carthy, Jerome Curtin and Gavin Power of the Midleton GAA Heathy Club Committee on their fantastic success in Dublin on Tuesday night last when their recent project "Cork Beats Stress" done in conjunction with St Finbarr's and the HSE South won the HMI Leader Award.
The award was presented on the night by the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar and HMI President Derek Green.
The Health Management Institute of Ireland launched an award, the HMI Leaders Award, earlier this year. This newly inaugurated award recognises the outstanding achievements of individuals and teams that exemplify the innovation, creativity and commitment of people working in the Irish health services.
Cork Beats Stress c/w Jennifer Hayes Department of Psychology, HSE, Cork and her colleagues adapted an innovative approach to the delivery of mental health services within the community. In collaboration with 2 local GAA clubs Midleton & St Finbarrs, she and the team were committed to teaching effective skills to reduce anxiety and depression en masse and to reach out to males in particular. With scant resources, no road map, this innovative project dared to be different, by being knitted into the fabric of the community. This pilot project aimed to educate and empower the community as to how to handle stress and manage depression. More importantly, it aimed to break down the stigma associated with mental health issues.
