Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Fe 21 Hurling Championship
Last Thursday evening in Castlemartyr we surrendered our East Cork and County titles with a defeat to Dungourney in the opening round of the championship.
We had a very good start to the game were we led by six points after a quarter of an hour but the concession of two goals before halftime brought them right back into the game at 0-16 v 2-06. In the second half it was point for point before once again they struck for two more goals which in the end proved crucial, the final score was Midleton 1-19 v Dungourney 4-14. We wish them well going forward.
Team: Coran Swayne, Elliot Mulchay, Gavin Bagnell, Darren Quirke (0-03 2 frees), Luke Dineen, Leslie Coughlan, Seanaidh Smyth, Sean O Farrell (0-02), Billy O Shea, Kieran Maloney, Padraig Nagle (0-07 5 frees), Cormac Beausang (1-01), Josh Deady, Patrick White (0-05) & Lochlinn Mc Carthy (0-01).

Minor Hurling Championship
Our minor hurlers were disappointingly knocked out of the Premier 2 championship last Wednesday evening in Ballinacurra by a very efficient Aghada outfit.
The first half was quiet even with points  exchanged regularly, however when they turned up the tempo with the aid of the wind in the second half they pulled away for victory on a scoreline of Midleton 0-11 v Aghada 1-23.
Team: Eoin Maloney, Luke Morrissey, Gavin Bagnell, Josh Deady, Kevin Mulcahy, Luke Dineen, Seanaidh Smyth, Luke Finnerty, Sean O Meara, Cormac Beausang, Kieran Maloney, Padraig O Brien, Calem Deady, Lochlinn Mc Carthy & Garren Manley. Subs used Shane Buckley, Brian O Mahony & Ryan Mc Conville.

Juvenile Notes

Fe12
On Monday next the 7th of July our FE12 hurlers will head to Croke Park to play in a blitz and will do a tour of the Stadium and Museum. We were one of 16 clubs to be picked to take part in this fantastic trip to HQ. Our Club took part in the LEE FLAG PROGRAMME in Cork and this was one of the rewards doing so. We will leave the club early on Monday morning and hope to be in Croke Park for 11am.Our blitz is from 1 to 2pm and after that we will head to Naas where we will play a game on the way home. This will be a great opportunity for our young Magpies to play in Croke Park and a memory that will last forever.

Fe14
Midleton U14 Footballers "came back from the dead" to defeat Carbery Rangers by 3-11 to 4-7 in the replayed Final of the Premier 2 Cork County Championship at Cloughduv last Thursday evening.
Five minutes into the game Carbery lead by 2-1 to 0-0 and Midleton were floundering badly. Midleton just couldn't get into the game and had great difficulty dealing with the fast running game of Carbery. Just before half time the score was 3-4 to 0-1 when Midleton got a lifeline goal on the stroke of the short whistle.
Carbery got the first score of the second half. However the changes that Midleton made at half time were beginning to work and we slowly clawed our way back into the game getting the next 4 points on the trot. Carbery answered with 2 points of their own leaving the score Carbery 3-7 Midleton 1-5 with 15 minutes to go. Midleton pegged back the lead with 5 unanswered points, leaving just a goal between the sides with 5 minutes to go. Then within 3 minutes Midleton scored 2-1 to put us 4 points up. Carbery rallied and scored a great goal. With time virtually up Carbery won a free about 40 yds out which they failed to convert to draw the game and when Midleton won the kick out, the Ref blew the whistle.
This was a victory that was born out of hard work, fitness and a "never say die" attitude. It was a fantastic achievement to come back from being 12 points behind at one stage. While it was a great final to win, it was also a hard final for Carbery to loose having been so dominant in the first half.
Team: Jake Shanahan, Mark Daly, Sean O Sullivan, Alan Power, Cormac O Brien, Ciaran Evans, Conor O Leary, Kian Farmer, Cian Murray, Griffin Hurley, Ross O Regan, Evan Rowlands, Gary Carroll, Tommy O Connell, David Scanlon, Fergus Wade, Ryan O Riordan, Christian Murphy, Adam O Connell, Coleman Quinn, Ronan Lynch, Craig Barry, Niall Higgins, Jamie Collins.
