Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Senior Hurling
Our hurlers made up for our first round defeat with a very convincing victory of a gallant Killeagh side at Top of the Hill Youghal last Sunday afternoon.
Despite Killeagh taking an early lead we settled very fast into the game with fine scores from Luke O Farrell, Conor Lehane and a great goal from Eoin Walsh. In the course of five minutes during the first half we lost Paul Haughney and Brian Hartnett through injury. However the introduction of Padraig O Keeffe and Padraig Nagle added further momentum to the team and the latter cracked home a superb goal just before the halftime whistle to leave us ahead at the break by 2-12 to 0-07.
On the restart we quickly got back into the game an added further points, however Killeagh did not lie down , they responded with some points of their own and eventually got through for a goal. This was a short lived setback for us as we immediately set up an attack out of our defence setting up Patrick White for a run in on goals and he sent a bullet to the back of the net. From then on it was score for score between the two teams with Joe Loftus in goals pulling off some very fine saves and he marshalled our backs brilliantly to see the game out. The final score was 3-18 to 1-13, well done to our players and management team who can now relax a little and wait for the Round 4 draw.
Team: Joe Loftus, Elliot Mulcahy, Alywin Kearney, Leslie Coughlan, Seamus O Farrell, Aidan Ryan, James Nagle, Paul Haughney (0-01), Peter Dowling, Eoin Walsh (1-03), Padraig O Shea, Luke O Farrell (0-03), Patrick White (1.01), Conor Lehane (0.10 6frees) & Brian Hartnett. Subs used Padraig O’ Keeffe, Padraig Nagle (1-00) & Seanaidh Smyth.
A word of thanks to the host club Youghal club, everything ran very smoothly and the pitch was fantastic, many thanks for the hospitality and assistance shown to our club in the lead up to the game and throughout the day.

Junior A Hurling Championship
Our hurlers got their championship campaign off to a great start with a well-earned victory over a spirited Russell Rovers side last Saturday evening in Castlemartyr.
Despite fielding one of the youngest teams in quiet sometime at this level our lads settled into the game very quickly. Fine points from Brian O Sullivan, Darren Quirke and Cormac Beausang had us heal to heal with the Rovers early on but a rally of scores just before halftime settled this game. Goals from the youthful Lochlinn Mc Carthy and the veteran Aenghus Cotter give us a commanding lead at halftime of 2-10 v 1-06. In the second half scores were much harder to come by as defences tightened up but a cracking goal from Shane Ryan put us further ahead,  despite concededing a late goal we managed to close out the game and win by 3-14 v 2-12.
Well done to the players and management on this good win and they now await the draw for round 3 for their next opponents. Thanks to the host club Castlemartyr for having the pitch in fabulous condition.
Team: Christopher Dunlea, Eoin Ferriter, Oisin Cotter, Liam Clohessy, Billy O Shea, Luke Dineen, Gavin Bagnell, Darren Quirke, Sean O Farrell, Brian O Sullivan, Shane Ryan, Cormac Beausang, Lochlinn Mc Carthy, Aenghus Cotter & Padraig Nagle.

Juvenile Notes

Fe11
The last pair of Rebel Og Central Go Games was played last Tuesday 24th of June on the Community College GAA pitch. Twenty three of our finest Gaelic Footballers turned up that evening to face a gallant opposition from Na Piarsaigh. Conditions were near perfect for what was to be two excellent games of football. The standard of football on the day from the Midleton players was excellent. All the skills were on display high fielding, blocking, tackling and most important of all accurate passing.
It is obvious from what was on display that there’s great potential in this group of young lads. Midleton went on to win one game and so collected 2 valuable points that were available on the day.
Fe11 (Hurling V Cobh):
On a beautiful summer’s morning for hurling our Fe 11 hurlers travelled to Cobh on Sunday 29th of June, to take on the challenge of the Cobh Fe 11s. The pitch at Cobh was in immaculate condition for the two games and this was complemented by the sun shining for the duration of the matches. Both games were 10-a-side and all was ready for the throw-ins at 10:00am. From the start the standard of hurling and the commitment in both games was unbelievable. This group of players are improving with every outing. It was fitting that we finished with these two games as we triumphed in both of them. Again this weekend massive credit must go to the parents for having the players at the venue on time and all kitted out in the Magpie colours.
This was the final game of the Rebel Og Fe 11 hurling league.

Fe14
Midleton 2-6, Carbery Rangers 2-6.
On Saturday last at Cloughduv,  Midleton and Carbery Rangers came up evens in the final of the Premier 2 U14 Cork County Football Championship. It all has to be done again on next Thursday evening at the same venue.
Midleton started well and held sway with our backs on top and our forwards dangerous on the break. We lead 1-5 to no score coming up to half time, but Carbery got their only score of the half to leave the HT score 1-5 to 0-1 in favour of the underdogs. The second half had hardly begun when Carbery scored the goal they badly needed to bring them back into the game. After this they tacked on a few points to narrow the margin. Midleton scored a breakaway goal to put further distance between the teams but Carbery fought back. On the stroke of the full time whistle Midleton lead 2-6 to 1-6 but with increasing pressure from the Carbery forwards Midleton conceded a penalty which was converted, leaving no option for the teams but to settle affairs on another day.
Team: Jake Shanahan, Christian Murphy, Sean O Sullivan, Alan Power, Cormac O Brien, Ciaran Evans, Mark Daly, Kian Farmer, Cian Murray, Griffin Hurley, Ross O Regan, Conor O Leary, Gary Carroll, Tommy O Connell, David Scanlon, Fergus Wade, Ryan O Riordan, Adam O Connell, Coleman Quinn, Ronan Lynch, Evan Rowlands, Craig Barry, Niall Higgins, Jamie Collins.
