Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Senior Hurling
Our hurlers went down disappointingly in the first round of the championship to Erins Own on Sunday evening last in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Despite a very strong first half performance when we led at the break by 1.10 v 0.09 we surrendered the initiative in the second half when Erins Own scored a number of points and a decisive goal. We tried hard to get back into the game but unfortunately could not claw back the deficit.
We now face Killeagh in the second round of the championship at a date and time to be decided. Team: Joe Loftus, Killian Burke, Finbar O Mahony, Alywin Kearney, Seamus O Farrell, James Nagle, Eoin Walsh, Peter Dowling, Padraig O Keeffe (0.01), Padraig O Shea (0.01), Aidan Ryan (0.02), Brian Hartnett, Patrick White (1.00), Conor Lehane (0.09 8 frees) & Luke O Farrell (0.01). Subs used Leslie Coughlan & Seanaidh Smyth.

Juvenile Notes

Primary Go Games
Congrats to Paul Connaughton who represented Gaelscoil Mainistir na Corann in the Primary Go Games football at the Cork v Tipperary Championship game last Saturday evening in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Fe11
Our Fe 11 hurlers participated in the Joe Delaney 2014 Blitz in Ballincollig on Saturday 21st of June. We had a phenomenal turnout on Saturday with 34 of our hurlers showing on the day. Just to develop a little further of thei topic so as to give an indication of the numbers of young hurlers we have participating at underage here in Midleton there was at least another 4 players missing for various different reasons. Currently at Fe 11 we would have approximately 38 active players.
Returning to the Ballincollig Blitz, our panel was broken into  2 teams of eleven and 1 team of twelve. Each team had 4 games. First up was St. Finbarr’s  @ 11am. This was the start of a marathon of hurling for us and we started well in these games and managed to win two of them. The second round of matches was against Blackrock @ 11:45. Again this time we got the better of the Rockies in two of the three games. What was noticeable about the games was the amount of ground hurling that was on display. The fields were in such immaculate condition that the sliotar was flying along the ground. The final three games before the lunch break was against James Stephens of Kilkenny. Once the players were finished lunch there was only one series of games left and that was against the host’s Ballincollig.
In summary we had a feast of hurling and by the time the blitz finished at 3:30pm all of the players, coaches and parents were exhausted. Great credit is due to all parents and players associated with the Fe 11 panel because of the high standards they always set when representing both themselves and their club.

Fe14
Our Hurlers just came up short at the final hurdle, last Saturday at Semple Stadium we were defeated by Kilmacud Crokes in the final of the Feile All Ireland by just one point. In the first game we came up against Galway champions Athenry. In a very close game we won 2-5 to 1-5. Next we played Dicksboro Kilkenny and won this 2-6 to 2-5. Winning these two games saw up through to the Semi where we met Sixmilebridge of Clare. This was a highly fancied side who had sailed through their group by big winning margins yet Midleton played some great hurling and won out 1-09 to 0-2.

In the final we came up against Kilmacud Crokes. Kilmacud stated strongly and had 1-2 on the board in the first 5 minutes. Our lads fought back well to leave us a goal down at the short whistle 1-3 to 0-3. In the second half Midleton held sway for a long period and levelled the game at 1-4 each with 3 minutes to go. A puck of a ball was all that now lay between the sides and the winning score came from Kilmacud with a minute to go. Midleton had one further attack but unfortunately we failed to get the scores we needed.
Our lads are a credit to the Club. They played with power, passion and with great skill. We had some outstanding performances throughout the team and while we are all disappointed we will no doubt have more great days with these hurlers.
Team: Ross Shanahan, Christian Murphy, Sean O Sullivan, Alan Power, Cormac O Brien, Ciaran Evans, Tommy O Connell, Kian Farmer, Evan Rowlands, Griffin Hurley, Ross O Regan, Jake Shanahan, Sam Quirke, Cian Murray, David Scanlon, Fergus Wade, Ryan O Riordan, Adam O Connell, Coleman Quinn, Gary Carroll, Conor O Leary, Ronan Lynch, Mark Daly, Cian Crowley, Craig Barry.

The same panel of players play in the Cork County Premier 2 Football Championship final on next Saturday in Pairc Ui Rinn against Carbury Rangers.
