Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Canon O’Brien Trophy
Last Saturday the hurlers of Cork and UCC crossed camans in the annual competition in honour of Canon Michael O Brien at the Mardyke in front of a healthy crowd despite the inclement weather. After a tough hours hurling Cork came out on top despite a late spirited comeback by the college but in the end they ran out defeated on a scoreline of Cork 2-19 v UCC 1-14. We had a number of club players involved on both sides, for Cork Paul Haughney played at midfield and had a fine outing scoring 3 points and late in the game Luke O’ Farrell, Aidan Ryan and Seamus O’ Farrell all came into the action. For UCC we had Killian Burke and Brian Hartnett playing , we wish Killian well in his recovery from an injury he sustained early in the game and hope Conor Lehane will also be back soon. We wish UCC all the best this week in defence of the Fitzgibbon Cup when they take on WIT on Thursday.

Timothy Kirby RIP
On Saturday morning last Timothy Kirby late of Rosary Place peacefully passed away in the presence of his family. Tim as he was known to his friends held a number of positions in the Club over the past number of decades. He began as Hurling & Football Treasurer back in 1964 and held that position for a number of years, he then took on the role of Secretary in 1968 until the early 70’s. In 1972 he acted as Club Registrar, after a number of years off Tim returned in 1985 to take on the role of PRO and in 1987 he began his second term as Club Secretary and remained on in that role until the mid 90’s. Tim also acted for a number of years as Treasurer of the Club Executive Committee and also for the East Cork Junior Board from 1969 to 1974. To his wife Rosemarie and his family we extend our deepest sympathy.

Last Friday night one of our longest serving Club workers retired from the role of shopkeeper after a term of over 40 years. Kathleen Crotty or Mrs Crotty which she is affectionately known as left the Club shop for the last time and handed over the reins to the very capable Marian Ryan. Seamus Murphy, Alan Donegan and Liam Ryan all wished Kathleen the very best and thanked her and her family for their huge contribution to the Club throughout the years. Kathleen has not gone away, she has assured us that she will be attending Bingo on Friday nights.
