Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Junior Hurling
Our Junior A hurlers played the first round of the East Cork Hurling Championship last Friday evening in Dungourney against Castlemartyr.
Despite fielding a young and inexperienced team we done quite well in the first half and were level at 5 points a piece at halftime. Facing into the wind in the second half we found scores very hard to come by and when they finally breached our defence for a goal the game effectively went away from us. Full credit to the lads for fighting to the end but the result was not to be in our favour.
Final Score: Midleton 0.09 v Castlemartyr 1-11.
Team: Christopher Dunlea, Niall O Regan, Eoin Ferriter, Padraig O Farrell, Darren Quirke 0.04(3F 1P), Declan Ryan, Leslie Coughlan, Shane Ryan 0.01 , Sean O Farrell, John Keane, Kieran Mulcahy, Padraig Nagle, Brian O Sullivan, Ian O Brien & Michael Abernethy 0.04 (4F). Subs used Killian Hurley for O Sullivan, Liam Clohessy for O Brien & James O Donnell for Nagle.
Many thanks to those who helped out on Saturday night last for the Junior Hurling Championship game in the field between Killeagh and Sarsfields.

Juvenile Notes

Fe11
We participated in a blitz last Saturday in Ballincollig and were delighted with the fantastic effort put in by all the lads, there was a great display of skills on show and no shortage of effort all round. Many thanks to the host club for the invitation and their hospitality.

Fe12
Midletons’ Fe12 hurlers travelled to Bishopstown for a blitz with teams including Bishopstown, Eire Óg (Nenagh), Abbeyside Waterford.
We were missing a few players and arrived with 17 under 12’s. Thanks to some help from the Fe 10’s we made up two teams of 10 for four 15 minute a side games.
We came out of the blocks quickly with good opening games and had to work harder for the next two games. Overall our lads played very well and attacked the ball with attitude. Its great to see the improvements in the lads and hopefully they will keep improving over the coming months. Our next games are hurling against Carrigaline on Tuesday 25th away and then on Thursday 27th again away to Valley Rovers for a football match. Many thanks to Bishopstown for a well organised blitz with great hospitality at the end with a huge catering operation for all the teams who travelled.
Well done to the Under 10’s who helped us out and held their own in the games.

Fe13
On Saturday 22nd June in Kilbarry, Midleton and Na Piarsaigh U13 Hurlers couldn't be separated at the end of a brilliant and enjoyable Premier 1 Cork County Hurling Final. This game was not for the faint-hearted with both sides having the opportunity to win the game. In the end it was Midleton hard work, no end of skill and a brilliant point from Team Captain, Tommy O Connell that forced this game to a replay, to be played at the same venue next Saturday.
Na Piarsaigh opened smartly and with our players slow to settle, Na Piarsaigh were well on top for the opening 20 minutes. The score could have been far more than the 0-4 to 0-1 in favour of Na Piarsaigh, but for the wayward shooting of the Na Piarsaigh forwards who were forced to shoot under pressure. Some positional changes at this stage worked well and Midleton began to get a grip on the game. Soon after Midleton got the only goal of the first half when a ball broke around the Na Piarsaigh square and was whipped to the net by Gary Carroll. A pointed free and another from play saw Midleton finish the half in the lead on a Score line of 1-3 to 0-5.
Midleton enjoyed a strong spell at the start of the second half and having scored a quick point soon added a great goal from Sam Quirke after showing tremendous skill. In between Na Piarsaig tagged on 2 points. With 12 minutes to go Na Piarsaig won a free 70 meters out on the right from Midleton's goal. After sloppy defending, the resultant strike went all the way to the Midleton net making the score at this stage Midleton 2-4 Na Piarsaigh 1-7. Both teams exchanged a point each, until Na Piarsaigh went a point up from a 65. This appeared to be the winning score until Tommy O Connell split the Na Piarsaigh posts with time virtually up to tie the scores. Soon afterward the referee blew the long whistle and both teams will go at it again next week. Our players showed great character and worked hard throughout. There was some great hurling played in this spectacle by both sides. We'll need an overall improved performance and cut down on silly frees to bring home the silverware next Saturday in Kilbarry again @ 3.30pm. This is well within our grasp.
Our Team was represented by: Ross Shanahan, Mark Daly, Alan Power, Christian Murphy, Ciaran Evans, Sean O Sullivan, Cian Murray, Tommy O Connell, Ross O Regan, Kian Farmer, Tunde Olotu-Jubril, Jake Shanahan, Sam Quirke, Cormac O Brien, Gary Carroll, Evan Rowlands, Griffin Hurley, Fergus Wade, Ronan Lynch, Coleman Quinn, Adam O Connell, Eabhan DeBarra, Cormac Hill, David Scanlon, Niall Higgins, Ryan O Riordan.
