Midleton Hurling and Football, Ladies Football and Camogie Club Notes - April 11

11 April, 2024

COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 2

MIDLETON 2-18 ERINS OWN 2-16

Our senior hurlers made the journey to face East Cork rivals Erins Own in Caherlag on Tuesday evening in a warm up for their championship meeting this summer.

Playing with the breeze we got off to a great start with two Cormac Beausang frees, a point from play from Paul Connaughton and an Alex Quirke goal (his third green flag in three league games) giving us a 1-3 to 0-1 lead after eight minutes.

But back game Erins Own with a goal and after Cormac Beausang and Pa White points we led by 1-5 to 1-2 ater the opening quarter.

Points from Cormac Beausang (3), Paul Connaughton and Darragh McCarthy saw us lead by 1-10 to 1-7 at the half-time interval.

We got off to a flying start to the second-half when Sam Quirke set up Paul Connaughton for our second goal after just 60 seconds of the second period.

Points from Cormac Beausang (3), Paul Connaughton and Sam Quirke saw us lead by 2-15 to 1-11 with 12 minutes to play but the home side pulled themselves right back into the game with their second goal but points from Cormac Beausang, Kian Farmer and Gavin Reddy saw us run out winners at Brian Murphy's final whistle.

EAST CORK JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3

MIDLETON 6-19 AGHADA 0-6

A much easier day than we expected against Aghada on Sunday last in Rostellan. Considering the recent weather and lack of training as a consequence it was nice to get a run into the players legs. Leading 3-12 to 0-4 at the short whistle we pushed on to record a comfortable win.

MIDLETON: Zach Smith, Colin Sunderland, Gavin Bagnall, Neil Fitzgerald, Charlie Walsh, Patrik Kane, Darragh Codd, Alan Power (0-1), Niall Lang (1-2), Harry Wall (1-3), Ben O'Neill, Christian Daly, Mark O'Keeffe (0-8, 3f), Brian O'Sullivan (3-2), Chris Power (1-2). Subs: Tadgh Bohan, Luke Deane (0-1), Charlie Linehan, Rory Lester, Brendan Ferriter

MIDLETON 1-15 RUSSELL ROVERS 1-18

On Tuesday we welcomed Russell Rovers to Clonmult Memorial Park. This was a much stiffer test than what we faced a couple of days previously. It wasn't one of our better performances but credit to the lads who battled right to the end. At half time we trailed 1-9 to 1-5, we did get it back to within a point in the second half but Rovers held out to claim the points.

MIDLETON: Brian O'Sullivan, Rory Lester, Gavin Bagnall, Colin Sunderland, Charlie Walsh, Darragh Codd, Neil Fitzgerald, Alan Power (0-5f), Luke Deane, Harry Wall (0-3, 1f), Ben O'Neill, Andy Rea (1-2), Stuart O'Connor (0-1), Chris Power (0-4), Charlie Linehan. LILY GRANT JUNIOR LEAGUE

Midleton 2-3 Bishopstown 2-4

On Friday night last we travelled to the all-weather pitch in Bishopstown to play our first League game of the season in the Lilly Grant League (League for 2nd Teams). All weather was the appropriate description as the girls had to battle through driving wind and rain for the full hour. But battle they did and were very unlucky to come out on the wrong side of a 2-4 to 2-3 scoreline. Conditions were truly biblical and playing with them in the first half we took a 1-3 to 1-1 into the break . The goal coming from a well worked goal by Rachel Ryan. We resumed against the elements in the second-half and a fantastic finish by Jade Fitzgerald gave us some breathing room. But the conditions finally told and a late point by Bishopstown saw them hold  on for a one point win. Huge credit to the 17 girls who travelled and played and we can look forward to better conditions and better luck hopefully for the rest of the League. Next outing is in Midleton next Friday (weather permitting) v Valley Rovers.

MIDLETON: Kate Griffin, Elle McManus, Kate Saunderson, Beth Ryan, Caoimhe Cronin, Pippa Hennessey, Meghan Wallis, Sorcha Cronin (0-2f), Lucy Kenneally, Ciara McGrath, Rachel Ryan (1-01), Hannah Power, Cara Foley, Rayanna Power, Jade Fitzgerald, Tia Wallace, Rebecca Ryan.

CORK U-16S

Best of luck to Roisin McManus U16A and Robyn Keating and Sarah McConville U16B who all line out for Cork U16 teams this weekend V Limerick in Fethard. Best of luck to all three girls.

PAUDIE IS CAMINO BOUND

Our own Paudie O'Brien is heading to the Camino this weekend and he would love if you could support him and a great cause....

'Hi my name is Paudie O Brien , I am well known in the GAA in Cork and every year for the last 5 years I have participated in the 100daysofwalking initiative with Dr Ciara Kelly and Newstalk. This year I had been struggling with injuries and I decided I’d give it a go , so far it has gone well.

So I have decided that I am going to try and walk the Final stage of the French Camino from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela 115km in 5 days. Starting on April 13th and finishing on April 17th.

This is a promise I made to a good friend of mine back in 2018. He kept his side of the bargain before he passed in 2020 and now it’s my turn. So in his memory I am doing it for Prostrate Cancer Ireland , Cancer research and Cancer services in Cork. Cancer has effected nearly every family in Ireland and this is my way of trying to help these families throughout the country .

All donations would be appreciated.'

MIDLETON HEALTHY CLUB

FREE SAFETALK- 'SUICIDE ALERTNESS TRAINING FOR EVERYONE'

SafeTALK is suicide alertness training that prepares attendees, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive.

SafeTALK-trained helpers can recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources. SafeTALK-trained helpers are an important part of suicide-safer communities, working alongside intervention resources to identify and avert suicide risks.
