Midleton Hurling and Football, Ladies Football and Camogie Club Notes - December 21

21 December, 2023

ADULT CLUB

EAST CORK CHAMPIONS

UNDER 21 A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL

MIDLETON 1-13 SARSFIELDS 0-15

Midleton captain, Paul Connaughton, receiving the cup from East Cork Board chairperson, Avril Geary. Photos with much thanks, as always, to Denis O'Flynn.

The 2023 playing season came to an end at a windy Aghavine on Sunday last as we took on Sarsfields in the Mulcahy Steel sponsored East Cork U-21 AHC Final.

This was always going to be a really tough battle between two strong teams and so it proved as the result was in the balance right until the final whistle, deep into second-half stoppage time.

Sars won the toss and opted to play against a very strong breeze in the opening half.

We got off to a flying start with a point from Tadhg O'Leary Hayes inside 20 seconds followed by a Mikey Finn free and a David Cremin goal to give us a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after three minutes.

Sars came into it but with Mikey Finn in superb form from frees, we led by 1-7 to 0-4 after 22 minutes. By the half-time whistle it was 1-9 to 0-5 in our favour as we turned around to face the gael force breeze.

Sars opened the second-half scoring but three Mikey Finn points on the bounce had us 1-12 to 0-6 in front with 18 minutes to play and looking good.

But four Sars points on the bounce saw them cut the gap to five (1-12 to 0-10) withsix minutes to play before Mikey Finn struck our final score of the game with just over five minutes to play.

Sars hit the last five scores but thankfully our defence held out to keep a crucial cleansheet and at the final whistle we had done it by a single point after a hard-fought, gripping encounter between two very good teams.

This was a great win for this team and its managment team of Pat Walsh, Davy O'Brien, Padraig O'Shea, Alywin Kearney and Jerry Smyth.

Well done to all involved and Up The Magpies!!!!

Scorers: Mikey Finn 0-11, David Cremin 1-1, Tadhg O'Leary Hayes 0-1.

And always be aware of the open water surrounding the pitches in Park South.
If you are a coach, please pass on these simple messages to players and parents.
All members are asked to respect referees and their officials at all times.
Also if you are a coach, last person out locks the gate, toilet and container.

CONDOLENCES

Everyone at Midleton GAA club would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and all at Carrigtwohill GAA club on the death this week of their Club President, Eddie O'Riordan.

Eddie was a well-known photographer in the East Cork area, and beyond, for many decades and over the years he must have taken thousands of pictures of Midleton GAA teams, long pucs, functions etc and he was always a pleasure to deal with and a great character. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Everyone at Midleton GAA would like to wish all our players, members, their families and friends a very happy and peaceful Happy Christmas.

We would like to acknowledge all our members and friends who follow and support us from all over the world.

We would also like to thank everyone who helped us out in 2023 in anyway, committee members, coaches, selectors, players, sponsors, those invoved in preparing and maintaining our pitches and so many more people that work tirelessly for the betterment of our club in the background. We thank you all and look forward to seeing you all again in 2024.

Personally I would like to thank everyone (far too many to mention) who help me each week to compile these notes. Thanks a million.

The notes will take a break for a few weeks now as we try and recharge the batteries after a very busy 2023 and get ready for 2024.
