Midleton Hurling and Football, Ladies Football and Camogie Club Notes - December 6

06 December, 2023

JUVENILES

FÉ16 P1 COUNTY CHAMPIONS

MIDLETON 2-18 DOUGLAS 1-12

2023 Fé16 P1 County Hurling Champions.....Midleton.

On Sunday afternoon last we contested the U-16 P1 County Hurling Final against Douglas in Bishopstown.

On our way to the final, we had two extremely tough battles with Youghal and Sars in which we came out on top on both occasions with two-point wins. These games stood us, as we knew Douglas were a formidable outfit.

This was very evident from the off with a lot of physicality and early scores from the opposition. Once we settled, we began to dominate the game, winning every ball that came our way. The scores began to flow from a long range effort from captain Matthew McSweeney, Josh Hogan on the wing, Nicky Coughlan at midfield and the on fire Cian Stack we raced into a 2-8 to 0-5 lead after 20 minutes. The goals coming from the aforementioned Stack and Senan Carroll and with Shane O'Mahony unerring from frees we went in 2-14 to 1-7 in front at the half-time break. It was a superb half of hurling which was our best of the season.

Midleton captain, Matthew McSweeney with the referee and Douglas captain before the game in Bishopstown.

The second-half was a cagey affair, but our work-rate from the likes of Josh Foley, Eoin Ahern, Max Murphy and Sean Crowley kept our opponents at bay who had threatened a comeback only for some wayward shooting. To be fair to our opponents they never threw in the towel, but neither did the likes of Rian O'Driscoll, Lochlann Stewart, Darragh Cronin, Ryan Fitzsimmons and Peter Barrett who worked there socks off to keep the opposition at bay. As the game drew to a close goalkeeper Conor Finn was called upon on several occasions but stood firm on each time.

It was a fantastic win after a long year and captain Matthew McSweeney accepted the cup on behalf of this fine bunch of young men. It also meant that we picked up a league and championship double having defeated the same opposition in the league final in June. Well done to all. Magpies Abú.

MIDLETON: Conor Finn, Rian O Driscoll, Lochlann Stewart, Eoin Ahern, Max Murphy, Matthew McSweeney (Captain), Darragh Cronin, Sean Crowley, Nicky Coughlan, Josh Hogan, Senan Carroll, Josh Foley, Cian Stack, Shane O'Mahony, Peter Barrett, Ryan Fitzsimmons, Noah Cahill, Eoin Hurley, Daniel Donovan, Tiago Fleming, Diarmud Lester.

Celebration time in the dressing room after the game with the cup.

HEALTHY CLUB

At the Munster Provincial Awards this week at Mallow GAA Club, Midleton GAA Healthy Club received a Silver Healthy Club Award for our policies, activities and for our engagement with our wider community.

Midleton GAA's Healthy Club journey started back in 2013, when we were selected as one of the 13 clubs nationally to take part in the Healthy Club Initiative. Sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to achieving this award, to those in 2013 who had the vision to sign Midleton GAA Club up to the initiative and to those who have come on board in later years.

This award could not have been achieved if we as a club did not work together to promote the health and wellbeing of all our members! Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and we will start 2024 with the Irish Life Every Step Counts Challenge (more details next week).

(Well done to Mairead Beausang and all who have worked tirelessly on this project on behalf of our club for the last ten years.....it's much appreciated.)

FONDÚIREACHT SHEOSAIMH MHIC DHONNCHA 2023

Diarmuid Ó Dálaigh receiving our silver award at Croke Park on Friday night from Lorcán Mac Gabhann and Paul Flanagan.

The 2023 Joe McDonagh Foundation ID medals were presented at a special ceremony in Croke Park on Friday night last. 55 clubs from all over Ireland won bronze, silver or gold medals for their efforts, work and commitment to the promotion of the Irish language. The 7 Gold Medal winning clubs, the 15 Silver Medal winning clubs and the 33 Bronze Medal winning clubs this year, were announced by sports and entertainment broadcaster Gráinne McElwain.

We were delighted to have been awarded a silver medal on the night. Congratulations and well done to our Irish and Cultural Officer, Diarmuid Ó Dálaigh for all his hard work in achieving this accolade. Maith an fear.

The Joe McDonagh Foundation is a partnership scheme between Glór na nGael and the GAA. The partnership is committed to increasing the presence and use of Irish in GAA clubs throughout the country. These medals are evidence of the clubs' ongoing efforts to integrate the Irish language into their activities and to foster their growth amongst their members and communities.

This event not only recognises the individual achievements of the clubs, but also strengthens the importance of nurturing and promoting the Irish language through sport.

Bronnadh boinn aitheantais Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha 2023 ag searmanas speisialta i bPáirc an Chrócaigh oíche Aoine, an 1 Nollaig 2023. Bhuaigh 55 club ó gach cearn den tír boinn chré-umha, airgid nó óir as a gcuid iarrachtaí, a gcuid oibre agus a dtiomantas do chur chun cinn na Gaeilge. Ba í an craoltóir spóirt agus siamsaíochta Gráinne McElwain, a bhí mar bean an tí, a d’fhógair na 7 gclub a bhain Boinn Óir, na 15 chlub a bhain Boinn Airgid agus an 33 club a bhain Boinn Cré-Umha i mbliana.

Is scéim chomhpháirtíochta í Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha idir Glór na nGael agus an CLG. Tá an comhpháirtíocht tiomanta do láithreacht agus úsáid na Gaeilge a mhéadú i gclubanna CLG ar fud na tíre. Is fianaise iad na boinn seo a bronnadh ar iarrachtaí leanúnacha na gclubanna chun an Ghaeilge a chomhtháthú ina ngníomhaíochtaí agus chun a fás a chothú i measc a mbaill agus a bpobail.

Ní hamháin go n-aithníonn an ócáid seo éachtaí aonair na gclubanna, ach neartaíonn sé freisin an tábhacht a bhaineann leis an Ghaeilge a chothú agus a chur chun cinn tríd an spórt.
