40 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

40 years ago last Monday (October 9) the hurlers of Midleton ended a 67 year famine to land the Cork County Senior Hurling title by defeating St. Finbarr's in the Final in Pairc Uí Chaoimh. It was a never to be forgotten day for the Magpies and it was one that kick started a memorable era for the club as they went on to add several more county titles as well as Munster and All-Ireland crowns.....pictured is captain John Fenton lifting the cup after the win.

FÉ15S

FÉ15 C3 HURLING LEAGUE FINAL V BALLINORA

The last competitive game of the season for the Fé15 boys was the final of the C3 Hurling league against Ballinora. Finishing top of the league ensured home advantage at Clonmult Memorial Park for the final. Having last played a competitive match in this competition on August 19th and playing into a slight breeze in the first half, the lads started slowly and found points hard to come by. However, important goals from James Carey and Patrick O’Dowd in this first half ensured that the lads were at least within touching distance at their opponents at half time with the scoreline Midleton 2-4 Ballinora 0-14.

The second-half was a tight affair with very little between the two teams. However, the ability of the Midleton lads to raise the green flag proved decisive, with further goals from Scott Dunlea, Ewan Murphy and James Carey. Credit also to some outstanding defending across the team and special mention to our goalkeeper Michael Allegrini who was outstanding on the day and indeed throughout the year. The scoreline at the final whistle after a pulsating second half was Midleton 5-7 Ballinora 0-19. Well done lads.

Scorers: James Carey (2-2), Scott Dunlea (1-1), Patrick O’Dowd, Ewan Murphy (1-0 each), Dara Birdthistle, Fionn Bohan, Sean Gregory, Darragh Mullins (0-1 each).

MIDLETON: Michael Allegrini, Patrick Collins, Cuan Twomey, Adam Spillane, Ruairi O’Riordan, Jason Morley, Fionn Bohan, Patrick O’Dowd, Scott Dunlea, Dara Birdthistle, Sean Gregory (captain), Darragh Mullins, Bradley O’Brien, James Carey, Alex Horgan, Ewan Murphy, Dara Cahill, Rian Casey, Cian Hogan, Josh Quill.

Sean Gregory receiving the cup from Eoghan O'Connor of Rebel Og.

BEST OF LUCK

The very best of luck to the senior and intermediate players over the coming weeks in the county finals – you’ll have the full support of the Fé15 players and management. MAGPIESABU.

GAA MEMORABILIA EXHIBTION

In November, a group of Irish GAA stars (including our own Orlagh Farmer) and musicians will travel to Kenya as part of a Warriors for Humanity campaign in aid of Self Help Africa.

This group of GAA players will take part in only the second ever All-Star, Male and Female game in Africa. The target is for each participant to raise €10,000 by November. The goal is to plant one million trees in Africa in partnership with Self Help Africa who have spent decades working closely with local farmers, communities and experts to be the best at what they do. Each tree we plant will represent a livelihood for an African family.

'An integral part of the project is to train farmers on managing their trees for this purpose. As a result, we know that the trees are looked after and cared for over the years. We want the impact of our work to be felt for many years to come, benefitting future generations and leaving a legacy we can all be proud of.

To help fundraise for this great cause, Orlagh, wit the help of Denis O'Sullivan will stage a brilliant exhibition of GAA memoribilia at Midleton GAA Club on the upcoming Bank Holiday Monday (October 30) from 11am to 5pm. You can donate on the day or if you can't make it (it's well worthwhile if you can at all) then you can donate at: http://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/OrlaghFarmer
