Midleton Hurling and Football, Ladies Football and Camogie Club News - August 31

31 August, 2023

BUSY WEEKEND OF HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES AHEAD

This coming weekend is set to be a huge one for the club's hurling teams.

On Friday night (September 1) our Junior A hurlers will take on Carrignavar in Lisgoold at 7pm. After defeat in their opening round game against Carrigtwohill, this is a must win game. Best of luck to Steve and he players.

On Saturday (September 2) our Intermediate hurlers take on Ballygiblin in Ballynoe at 2pm. With two wins from two both teams are alread through to the knockout stages but the a win for either side could see them straight through to the semi-finals. Best of luck to Keith and his players.

On Sunday (September 3) our senior hurlers take on Blackrock in Carrigtwholl at 4pm. As with the intermediates, both these teams have already booked their place in the knockout stages but once again there's a fair chance that the winners of this game will book a semi-final berth.

Tickets to the senior and intermediate games must be bought in advance at the following link: http://gaacork.ie/tickets/

On Monday (September 4) our Junior C hurlers face Dungourney at 6.30pm, venue to be confirmed.

JUNIOR C FOOTBALLERS

Next up for Jerome and his Junior C Footballers is an East Cork Junior C Football Championship quarter-final against neighbours Ballinacurra on Friday next, September 8 at 6.30pm in Clonmult Memorial Park. Best of luck lads.

JUNIOR C HURLING

MIDLETON 2-24 RUSSELL ROVERS 1-5

After a good win over Bride Rovers in their opening game, our Junior C hurlers returned to action on Monday night against Russell Rovers in Clonmult Memorial Park.

To be fair Russell Rovers were very depleted but our lads still put in a very pleasing effort over the hour. This win now guarantees our passage to the knockout stages with a game to spare.

We would also like to pass on our best wishes and a speedy recovery to one of the Russell Rovers players who suffered a bad injury during the game.

Our final group game is against Dungourney this coming Monday evening at 6.30pm. Venue TBC. Dungourney have also won their opening two games so this will be a good test.

MIDLETON: Kieran Mulcahy, Colin Sunderland, Jack Fitzgerald, Kieran Lambert, Billy O'Shea, Darragh Codd, Liam Kelly, Dan Cagney (0-6, 2f), Daire Mooney, Evan Rowlands (0-3), Ben O'Neill (0-2), Andy Rea (0-6), James O'Sullivan (1-0), Brian O'Sullivan (0-4), Gavin Hurley (1-0). Subs Used: Rory Lester, Brendan Ferriter, Sean Corcoran, Johnny Comer (0-1), Alex Howard (0-1), Tadgh Bohan (0-1). Other panelists on the night: Jerome Curtin, Sean Cronin, Dan O'Sullivan, Niall Lang, James O'Leary Hayes.

JUVENILES

FÉ9S

It was back to the small ball this week with an away fixture against Glen Rovers. We played nine very competitive games and got positive results in the majority of these.

We were thrilled  with all our players, they battled for every ball and played some great hurling over the course of the games. We fielded three teams and all our players got plenty of touches and showed great skills.

FÉ12 JAMES O'BRIEN MEMORIAL CUP & SHIELD

Last Saturday we welcomed Mungret St Paul’s, Abbeyside, Brian Dillons and Kiltha Óg to Midleton to compete for the James O’Brien Cup and Shield.

Unfortunately the shield was reduced to only two teams, we were informed late in the week that two teams had to withdraw. We took on Brian Dillons in both hurling and football. To decide the winners of the shield we played another hurling match and our lads dug deep to secure victory in a thrilling final. Our lads played very quick and skilful hurling to complement their work ethic to see them claim victory and secure the first piece of silverware of the day.

The Cup was an extremely competitive affair. Midleton got off to a great start by beating Abbeyside in a tight match. Next up for the Magpies was Mungret St Paul’s, the Limerick side produced a great display to secure a convincing win. We were now facing a winner takes all match against Kiltha Óg, with the winner progressing to the final. Producing a great display of attacking hurling we secured the win to progress to the final and a rematch against Mungret St Paul’s.

Both teams travelled to Clonmult Memorial Park for the final and a large crowd gathered for the match. The final didn’t disappoint. In a rip roaring contest the lead changed hands throughout the first half and at the short whistle it was Midleton leading by a point. A great half to the second half saw us put 1-2 on the board to take a commanding lead. However not to be outdone Mungret refused to throw in the towel and a great battle ensued. As the game came to a close the gap had been closed to a goal. Mungret threw everything, but all of our lads stood us and repelled everything thrown at them. The final whistle went and much to the joy of the large home support we emerged victorious.

Our entire squad of players had a great day and represented the club with great pride.
The U12 management would like to thank the following people who helped in the organising and running of the competition: Pat O’Brien, Jim O’Brien, Micka O’Brien, Mary Quinn, Michael Caroll and the parents who provided, organised and served the refreshments. Up the Magpies.

The Fé12 coaches enjoying a well deserved cup of tea after a busy but very enjoyable day.

BILL O'KEEFFE -FÉ14 SHIELD TOURNAMENT

The winning Midleton team with Bill O'Keeffe's family, Liam, Cormac, Mary and Colman.

In what turned out to be a great afternoon for hurling, those that were in attendance in Park South last Sunday were treated to a great display of hurling that the man for whom the tournament was named in memory after, I have little doubt that he would have been delighted to see.

In all games played on the day between, Bride Rovers, Carrigtwohill, Killeagh and Midleton there was very little between the teams in terms of skills, teamwork, determination and desire to do the best for their clubs.

The event started with games between Midleton v Carrigtwohill and Killeagh v Bride Rovers, with narrow wins for Midleton and Killeagh.

This gave us semi final pairings of Midleton v Bride Rovers and Killeagh v Carrigtwohill, again these were evenly contested affairs throughout, with our ability to take goal chances giving us the edge in the end and a late goal by Killeagh giving them the victory to progress to the final.

The final continued in a similar vein to the other games that had been played throughout the afternoon, with end to end action and high calibre scoring, at the short whistle there was only two points in the game and neither team was able to build a significant lead, with the possibility of a draw looming large, it was our goal conversion rate that resulted in a three point win when the full time whistle was sounded.

We would like to thank, our players and parents for their continuing support, the visiting teams and mentors for a great tournament played in a sporting fashion. Our referees on the day, the juvenile committee for their support in organising the event, the O’Keeffe family for presenting the Cup to the winning Midleton Captain Daire Crowley (pictured below with Liam O'Keeffe) without all of these it would not be possible to put on an tournament such as this

Our focus as a group now turns to the “Cup Tournament” next Saturday afternoon once again in Park South when our Fé14 panel which will make up two teams who will welcome Blackrock, Bride Rovers, Charleville and Youghal to to compete in the Bill O’Keeffe Cup Tournament.

The first of three group stage games starting at 2pm on both pitches and continue for the afternoon with the final expected to throw in at approximately 4.15pm, a show of support for the players would be appreciated across the afternoon as they look to retain the Cup after it was won in 2022 by the current Fé15 panels.

CAMOGIE

UNDER 9S

Last Saturday, our U-9s played the Rockies as a prelude to the same fixture next weekend at half-time in the Cork Senior Hurling Championship meeting between the same clubs in Carrigtwohill. The girls showed great skill and worked hard, playing three very competitive games. Our girls are really improving each week.

UNDER 11S

Well done to our U11 girls who played some fine camogie against Dungourney and Carrigtwohill on Sunday morning in Park South. A big thank you to the U10 girls who joined us, the parents, coaches, Dungourney and Carrigtwohill for travelling.

UNDER 12 (WHITE)

A great League match win on Saturday when our U12 White team played Enniskeane in Clonmult Memorial Park. This team seems to be improving each game with teamwork, passing and communication on the pitch. Great accurate passing up the middle resulting in goals and points. Thanks to Enniskeane for make the journey. Well done girls and keep it up.

UNDER 13S

Our U13s played a challenge game away to Bride Rovers in Rathcormac on Saturday last. Unfortunately it was not our night but well done girls on showing grit and determination in a tough game. Well done to Saoirse who was captain on the night.

UNDER 14S

Our U14s made it two championship wins from two games, against a strong Ballinhassig team on Monday evening in Park South. On a lovely evening for camogie all 20 girls played their part in a great win. Congratulations to Sarah who captained the U14s against Ballinhassig.

UNDER 16S

Our U16s played the opening round of the U16 Premier 2 County Championship against a strong Newtownshandrum team in Park South. There are no easy games at this level and the girls were well aware that they must be prepared for a battle. From the throw in both teams gave a great account of themselves with the distance the Newtownshandrum girls were able to strike the ball being the main difference. A seven-point gap at half time was not an insurmountable gap, considering he girls had conceded 2 sloppy goals, and they went on to the field in the second-half full of confidence.

The Newtownshandrum girls were however just as determined. The visitors ran out eventual deserved winners on a scoreline of 3-18 to 6-6. Lessons can be learned from his game that will help the whole team to improve as they continue through the group games.

UNDER 15 CORK PANEL

Well done to Roisín and Faye who lined out for the Cork U15 camogie team on Saturday against Tipperary. Another great experience for the girls and another very solid performance from both.

LADIES FOOTBALL

It was an extremely busy week for our underage teams with all groups travelling for games.

UNDER 10

Our U10 girls travelled to Rathcormac were they all practiced their skills of hand passing and solos. Great teamwork and great fun was had by all.

UNDER 11

Our U11s played Carrigtwohill. There was fantastic hand passing, blocks and overall, a great team effort on the day. Well done to you all.

UNDER 12 CHAMPIONSHIP

Our U12’s made the long journey to Rockchapel where they played St Peter’s. In extremely difficult conditions of wind and rain the girls where behind 3-3 to 0-3 points at half time but they dusted themselves down and came out with great spirit in the second half and came away with a fantastic victory. Final score Midleton 4-07 St Peter’s 3-5

UNDER 13 DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

Our U-13 girls travelled to Castlemartyr to complete another fixture in their development league. With the help of some of our U12 girls we had 18 players on the night. They all played great football and it was great to see all the girls get lots of game time.

UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIP

Our U-16 girls played Glanworth in their quarter final fixture on Sunday last. A great display of football saw us come out as winners on the day. They now face Bishopstown in their semi-final which takes place on Monday Sept 11th in Ballinacurra at 6.45pm. Best of luck.
