Allianz National League

Cork secured their first League win in Pairc Ui Rinn by defeating Clare in round 3 on a scoreline of Cork 1-20, Clare 0-20. Cork will travel to the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on Sunday Feb 24th at 2.30pm for round 4.

Harty Cup 1988/2019

The victory by Midleton CBS in the Harty Cup yesterday brings to light some historic Midleton family connections between the yesterday’s victory and the first Harty victory for the school in 1988. For Cormac O’ Brien it was a happy ending to a traumatic day after his grandmother Dinah was buried earlier in Holy Rosary cemetery Midleton. Along with inspiring Captain Dylan Horgan and Dylan Healy he kept the CBC full forward to one score from play and ended the day on a high note. Cormac’s father Paudie was on the Midleton team of 1988 while two other family members, his uncles Sean and Tom were on the St Coleman’s team that won Harty medals in 1977. At centrefield yesterday Sam Quirke continued what his uncle David started in 1988. As with Dinah O’ Brien, Mossy Quirke was one happy grandparent looking down from above yesterday. Another Midleton player with connections to 1988 is Ross O’Regan. Ross’s four points yesterday was a vital contribution to the win and were almost as dramatic as the goal scored by his father Connie in the semi final against hot favourites St. Flannans in 1988. That goal brought the game to a replay which Midleton won before going on to defeat Thurles CBS in Mitchelstown in the final.

The fourth connection the 1988 and 2019 was with Ciaran Joyce centre back yesterday as his father Carey from Castlemartyr was also part of the Midleton team of 1988. While CBC had Midleton players Kevin Finn, Cian Murray and Gavin Reddy on their panel another CBC player has strong Midleton connections. At centre forward yesterday was Niall Hartnett who is the son of Michael Hartnett who won county medals at all levels with Midleton and who, but for an unfortunate knee injury, would no doubt have emulated his brothers John and Pat in representing his county at the highest level. John Hartnett was also a member of the St. Coleman’s team of 1977 along with other former Midleton players John Boylan and Ciaran Keohane.

Congratulations to former Midleton player and team Bainisteoir Iain Cooney and his wife Donna and the recent birth of twins, Bobby and Clara. Both Bobby and Clara sent messages of goodwill to their dad and the team from the hospital with the help of Geraldine McCarthy (Goldspring) and aunt to Sam Quirke. Former school Bainisteoir and Midleton senior player Aylwin Kearney’s message of goodwill from his class in Dubai was also very well presented and received. He will be delighted with the result which was a great fillip for the Midleton diaspora all over the world.
