Last Sunday the Midleton Ladies U14 team brought the East Cork Football 2014 season to a close with a great win over a very good Fermoy team in the East Cork Championship final. Midleton proved the old adage that ‘goals win games’ when they ran out winners on a score line of 6-06 to 3-06 played in the terrific facilities of Kilworth GAA club.
Fermoy fought back gallantly in the second half but the Midleton girls did just enough to keep the Fermoy Girls at bay and add the U14 title to the U16 won the week previously.
The game started with Fermoy doing all the running and settled quickly, racing into a 3 point lead. Midleton had two goal chances only for the Fermoy goalie making two great saves. After 10 minutes Midleton found the back of the Fermoy net with a great team goal worked up from the Midleton backline. This was followed by a well taken point and put us into the lead, a lead we held until the final whistle.
The first half settled into a good game of open football with Fermoy’s attacking play putting us under pressure. Midleton backs played well and Shauna in goal was in great form saving us on more than one occasion. Midleton led by 5 points at the break, but it was a much closer game than the score suggests with both teams getting the same number of scores, it was just that Midleton got the goals.
Half-time 3-2 to 0-6
A few changes at half time steadied the ship and our girls started at a blistering pace finding the Fermoy Goal for the fourth time, putting us eight points up. Fermoy are a good team and they hit a purple patch midway through the second half, bringing the game to Midleton the succeeded in beating the Midleton defence on two rare occasions for two well taken goals bring the score back to 2 points with about 10 minutes remaining. Midleton were determined not to give this one up dug in and took the game back to Fermoy, resulting in another goal. Fermoy had their chances but a combination of super defending and hitting the crossbar left Fermoy with a difficult mountain to climb.
Fair play to Fermoy, they kept going to the end but it was not to be their day. Midleton on the day were that bit stronger and all the midleton collectively as a team ran their socks off and were superb on the day. The U16 win the previous week and the semi-final V Na Piarsaighs also on the previous Sunday gave the girls huge confidence and entered this game with high expectations. For this bunch of girls it was a great return after a very long session, starting in February and finishing on the last day of November.

Midleton return to winning ways.
Last Saturday in the U16 East Cork Final Midleton played Watergrasshill in Watergrasshill in a pulsating game. Midleton came out on top on the by a single point. Final score 4-5 to 15 points.
Having to play without some of our regular starters this game was never going to be an easy task. WGH started the stronger and were first to reregister a score, before Midleton settled into the game and after ten minutes scored a fantastic goal followed by a point. This formed the pattern of play for the duration of the game. Midleton getting a goal, Watergrasshill pulling it back again with points, Midleton getting back a goal and The Hill pulling it back again. Score at half-time 3-2 to 0-10. There was one decisive moment in the second half, when Kate-Mary dived the width of the goal to stop the ball on the line. If that went in it could have been a different result at the final whistle.
This was one of the best games of football played at this grade this year and with the heavy underfoot conditions it was a credit to both teams to serve up such a wonderful free flowing game. At this time of year it is very unusual for a team to score 16 points (at any level) and still come out second best. This was mainly to do with the never give up attitude of the Midleton girls and a resounding rear guard display in the last 15 mins. The Hill put us under extreme pressure in the last 15 mins but the girls rose to the occasion and were determined not to let this one go. To single out a single girl would be an injustice to the rest of the team as each and every one gave it their all and gave us an incredible hour of ladies football. Great way to end the year.
Midleton v Watergrasshill full-time score 4-5 to 0-15.
Scores for Midleton: Michaela McCann 1-2, Susan Roche 1-0, Chloe Sigerson 2-3

Extra Panel who couldn’t make game: Lizzie Phiri, Abby Quirke, Charlie Moore, Katie Ryan, Ciara Stack.
The following day (Sunday) it was the turn of the U14 members of the panel to travel to Na Piarsaigh for the replay of the U14 East Cork Championship Semi Final. This was another pulsating contest and our girls with their confidence high from the day before put in a great shift and came out on top of a very bruising encounter. Final Score Midleton 5-6 Na Piarsaighs 2-3.

U12's contest East Cork league Final.
Under floodlights in Aghada was the venue for the U12 East Cork girls football final. Aghada fresh from their great win over Killshannig in the county final were full of confidence and running. The Midleton girls took the game to them and what a contest ensued. It was nip and tuck up to just before half time when Aghada struck a killer punch in the form of a match turning goal. Goals win matches and this proved the case with this goal. The girls played very well in the second half but couldn’t get the final few scores needed to turn the game in our favour. End result Midleton lost by 4 points. Losing to county champions by two scores is no mean feat, so very well done girls . Also well down to Aghada for a great game and congratulations on your great win in the county.

JUNIOR LADIES JOURNEY TO THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Round 1:
Watergrasshill 2-12 Midleton 2-10
6th of July 2014 in Watergrasshill GAA
Midleton headed out for their opening fixture against Watergrasshill with great ambitions and great strength in squad with the belief that a place in a County Final was very achievable. Their first fixture did not begin as they had hoped and after a slow start as the team tried to find its feet and positioning, against a well setup Watergrasshill, Midleton found themselves trailing at the break by 6 points.
Midleton regrouped in the 2nd half and slowly clawed back at the Watergrasshill lead however time was against them and at the final whistle Midleton had run out of time as the deficit had been reduced to just 2 points with no time remaining. Midleton had worked hard in the 2nd half and there were great positives to be taken from the 2nd half performance. Nothing to be taken from Watergrasshills great start and solid all round play. They came prepared and finished victorious on this occasion.
Round 2:
Midleton 5-16 Rockbawn 5-12
21st of July 2014 in Lisgoold GAA
Midleton started brighter in the 2nd Round against Rockbawn with an early goal and then exchanged point for point as both teams settled into their positions. Rockbawn however settled faster and caught Midleton with two goals in less than a minute and five goals in total in the 1st half. Midleton were not to be caught again and worked really hard with some skillful hand passing and shooting to reduce the halftime lead to leave Midleton trailing 5-8 to 3-8 at halftime.
Midleton were dominant in the 2nd half as the teams hard work at training, both in defence and attack, since their first round defeat to Watergrasshill started to pay off as their defence grinded Rockbawn down and reduced them to scoring only 4 points in the 2nd half. Midletons forwards were not to be upstaged by their defensive teammates either as they worked really hard and scored 2-8.
Round 3:
Midleton 3-18 Kinsale 1-15
28th of July 2014 in Kinsale GAA
Midletons third round saw them travel to Kinsale to play against another one of the favourites from the group. Both teams were well prepared and a large crowd both home support and those that had travelled with Midleton were making their support heard on the sideline cheering on their respective teams. Midletons play was impressive to watch, from accurate hand and kick passes to pinpoint accuracy with the boot, it was great to watch the progression the team had made and that all that hard work including the circuit training in the early months to the sprints sessions it was clear for everyone present that Midleton were starting to click.
Midleton pushed on in the 2nd half opening up a gap at one stage to a 9 point lead. Kinsale tried hard to fight back but Midletons defence worked extremely hard to keep Kinsales attack out and it paid off. Midleton held on to win by 6 points and came away from a very tough game with a great victory and high on confidence heading into the draw for a quarter final.
Quarter Final:
Midleton 5-10 Naomh Abán 2-07
19th of August 2014 in Midleton GAA
The Quarter Final Draw saw Midleton drawn at home against Naomh Abhán. It was Midletons first outing at their home GAA Club and again their support did not disappoint. A large home crowd came to see the Ladies perform in style. Midleton who were not seen as quick starters in the previous rounds were not hanging around in this game. Their forwards were on fire scoring 1-5 without reply in the first 10 minutes. Naomh Abhán struck their first point with a well worked team effort which required great determination to break down the rock solid defence. There were only 4 scores were in the next 10 minute period which was dominated by two defences that were determined to restrict play. 2 points were scored by Naomh Abhán however Midleton improved their lead by scoring 1 goal and 1 point. The final 10 minutes before half time were dominated by Midleton who held Naomh Abhán scoreless while scoring 2 goals and 2 points.
The halftime score was Midleton 4-7 Namoh Abhán 0-3
Midleton cruised through the 2nd half exchanging 1-1 with Naomh Abhán in the first 10 minutes. Again both teams were solid in defence in the next 15 minute period by keeping both sets of forwards scoreless. Midleton cruised for the last 10 minutes knowing the result was all but guaranteed and even a late rally by Naomh Abhán couldn't make a dent in Midletons lead. Midleton were through to the County Semi Final.
Semi Final:
Midleton 3-9 Douglas 3-7
31st of August 2014 in Caherlag (Erins Own GAA)
Midletons final hurdle heading for a County Final placed them into a Semi Final battle against Douglas at Caherlag. Two strong squads turned up with their fans in toe. This match had it all. Some great scoring, some great defending and all round great team work. This match was always going to be tough with great strength shown by defence and attack from both sides. Scores were exchanged and at halftime there was nothing separating the two teams with the scores drawn at 1-4 each.
The 2nd half started with Midleton taking the lead and pushing on, scoring three unanswered points. 2 quick points from Douglas closed the gap back to a 1 point lead however 2 team goals worked all the way from the backs through to the forwards opened Midletons lead to 7 points. Another 2 points pushed Midletons lead to 9 points. With 5 minutes remaining Midleton worked hard restricting Douglas' scoring. Midleton running out eventual winners and into the County Final.
Junior "A" Championship County Final:
Midleton vs. Fermoy at Mayfield
Saturday the 13th of September 2014 at 6pm.
The Team and Management (Ian, Ray, Philip and Willie) would like to thank all their family, friends and supporters for all their best wishes, for attending their games and cheering on the team. It’s great to see such numbers turning up for the matches. Also a big thank you to Paddy Corcoran Ladies Club Chairman and the rest of the Committee for their continued support. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the County Final next Saturday.
Midleton Exit U12 County in Thriller
If anyone is ever looking for a game to show case Ladies Gaelic Football, you need look no further than the fair served up between Midleton and Kilshannig in the U12 county qtr final played in sunny Midleton on Saturday last.
No amount of reporting will do justice to this game and words can’t describe the sheer determination, excitement and overall great football displayed by both teams. This match can only be described with emotion, as it was draining and nail biting to the final whistle.
An exciting contest from the start, Midleton trailed by a single point at half time. 1:0 to 1:1. Midleton’s goal coming from the end of a fine movement that was finished to the net by Lucy Kenneally.
The second half started with Kilshannig extending their lead by 3 points, but Midleton hit back with points of their own to leave the margin at 2 points. Midleton had the chances but luck was not on our side to get the goal the girls so tirelessly looked for. Midleton’s backs were excellent working extremely hard for the entire game, Amy O’Neill in Goal deserves special mention.
Goals win games and this certainly was the case with this game. Killshannig lead most of the second half by 2 points, and we just couldn’t pin that lead back. Midleton’s centre field pairing and forwards worked tirelessly and were very unlucky not to breach their strong defence on a number of occasions. Only one opportunity was all that was needed. But it was Kilshannig who got the break. Four minutes from time they came at us from a breakaway counter attack and got through our defence to raise the green flag. That put 5 points between the teams and time against midleton just couldn’t bring that back.
Final score Kilshannig 2:6, Midleton 1:4

U12 League Semi-Final Midleton v Glanmire A
Midleton 1-5 Glanmire 3-8
The Midleton U-12 girls travelled to ‘Buck Learys field’ in Glanmire last Friday 22nd August to take on Glanmire in the Semi-final of the East Cork C Football League. The girls put in a sterling performance all through the game and the final score is rough justice on these bunch of very committed and eager girls. It didn’t help our cause that we had no subs on the night so couldn’t introduce fresh legs when needed.
Glanmire settled into the game quickly and took the lead early on. But Midleton soon found their rhythm and began to play some really impressive football. However we found it difficult to break down the Glanmire defence. The first half ended with Glanmire leading comfortably by 3 goals. This game was much tighter than the score board displayed. Midleton were very unlucky on a number of occasions not to rattle the Glanmire net. The breaking ball didn’t go their way.
Words of encouragement by their coach Pa Beausang at half time and a few positional switches steadied the ship. This resulted in a much better defensive display in the second half with Glanmire finding it difficult to get scores. Midleton put a lot of pressure on the Glanmire backs and resulted with a goal and a few points. This gave the girls hope and they grew in confidence as the game went on, but it was not to be their night. The gap at half time was just too great, but Midletons second half performance is certainly something we can build on. These are a great bunch of players and are improving with every game. Thanks to their coaches and parents for their encouraging support on the night.
All is not lost as this result means that they have now qualified for the East Cork D League final against either Aghada or Na Piarsaigh, which will be on in a few weeks time. The rest of the girls will be back for this one and hopefully we can go one step further and bring home some silverware to the clubhouse. We have also qualified for the U12 D County Championship so a lot more to look forward to..

Football Fiesta was witnessed in the sun soaked Midleton Rugby Club last evening.
The U10 and U14/16 girls were put through their paces by their respected mentors @ 07:00 as part of their weekly training program.
At the same time 28 girls from the U8 team challenged 23 girls from Fermoy in a series of very entertaining go-games. This was the very first football match for many of our girls and it was a pleasure to watch. The girls were split into two teams and each team played for a total of 45 mins and one could only smile at the enthusiastic look on the girls faces as they took to the field. Once they figured out which direction they were playing in, they took to their task like a herd of gazelles gliding up and down the pitch. Breaks were the order of the day, mainly for the referees who at times found it difficult to keep up with the pace of the football. After each 15 min period we stopped to gain back our breath before starting off again. A great aspect of this game was the support play where every girl ran with the girl who had the ball. This tactic should serve both teams in the future years in their quest for Trophies.

At 07:30 the U12 team kicked Round 3 of the East Cork League when they took on a very formidable Na Piarsaigh team. 30 girls lined out for Midleton on the night. The fact that only 15 could start it was a fair achievement by the mentors to get them all game time over the hour. Midleton started briskly but found it difficult to break down a strong Na Piarsaigh defence. At the break Na Piarsaigh stormed in to a 3 goal lead with Midleton failing to score. Everyone agreed that this score line did not match up to what was being witnessed on the field of play and in the second half this sorted itself out with Midleton outscoring their opposition. But it was not to be Midleton’s day with Na Piarsaigh just edging them out at the end. Over all a very entertaining game and the girls are showing improvement with every game they play. Up next is Glanmire on Monday Night.
