JUVENILES 

FÉ15S - CORK P1 FÉILE CHAMPIONS

After winning their Fé13 and Fé14 county titles over the past two seasons the pressure was on our Fé15s last weekend when the Cork P1 Féile Finals took place at numerous venues around Cork as they went in as favourites to advance to the National Finals.

MATCH 1

We began our campaign bright and early on a glorious Saturday morning in Church Road, Blackrock when we took on the home side in front of a big crowd.

There was very little to choose between the teams in the opening half with a goal from Ciarán O’Brien seeing us in at the break in possession of a slender lead on a scoreline of 1-3 to 0-4.

Again the second-half was a tight affair but at the final whistle we had gotten the job done by four points on a final scoreline of 1-7 o 0-6.

MATCH 2

Our second game on Saturday morning was a clash with Carrigaline, once again in the splendidly appointed Church Road venue.

After a tight first-half we led by 0-4 to 0-1 at the break but we really upped the ante in the second-half and led by a Ciarán O’Brien green flag we ran out convincing winners on a final scoreline of 1-11 to 0-1 to book our place in the final four.

SEMI-FINAL

It was off to St. Finbarr’s GAA Club in Togher on a lovely Sunday evening, backed by a huge Midleton crowd, to take on Sarsfields in our semi-final.

There was very little between these teams and at the halfway stage the sides were level at 0-4 each.

Our lads dug really deep in the second period and another Ciarán O’Brien goal helped us book our place in the decider on a final score of 1-8 to 0-6.

FINAL

I don’t think anyone was surprised that the final was against this team’s long standing rivals, Ballincollig, and there was no surprise either that these two excellent teams served up a cracker or the massive crowd, with Ballincollig going for the double after taking the football honours the week previous.

A John O’Sullivan goal and a pair of points from Jack Cahill saw us go in a point down at half-time, 1-2 to 0-6.

Ballincollig stretched their lead to three shortly after the break but back came the Magpies with points from Liam Walsh, Ciarán O’Brien and Alfie Hennessy. The Muskerry men struck back and led in injury-time before Liam Walsh showed nerves of steel to slot over a last gasp free to send the game to extra-time. Full-time score: Midleton 1-6 Ballincollig 0-9.

Three Liam Walsh points (one from play) put us ahead by a single point at half-time in extra-time (1-9 to 0-11) but crucially, thanks to our brilliant defence, Ballincollig failed to score in the final period of extra-time and points from Charlie McCarthy and Rory Nolan saw us land a memorable victory on a final scoreline of 1-11 to 0-11 after a brilliant battle.

After the game, captain Finn Cahill, accepted the cup on behalf of his team-mates amid great scenes of celebration for the Black and White clad players and supporters.

Well done to this great bunch of players and their management team on this great win and best of luck for the rest of the season.

Next up Midleton will represent Cork at the All-Ireland Féile Finals in Wexford at the end of June.

FÉ7S

Our Fé7s boys had a brilliant morning of hurling in Clonmult Memorial Park on Saturday when we hosted Erins Own for some great games. Well done boys.

 

FÉ12S

It was another busy weekend of Football for our FÉ12s lads in St Colman's Community College on Saturday.

Our MID2 lads started the morning off with a home game against Douglas in Football in the Rebel Og U12 League series of games.

We got off to a slow start against a very strong Douglas side in the first-half  but however the lads battled hard in the second-half and showed a huge improvement.It was not our day in the end and Douglas came away with the win. Final Score 1-4 to 3-7.

Our MID1 lads hosted Erin's Own in the Rebel Og U12 Football league Series of games and from start to finish our lads dominated this game with a final scoreline of 7-12 to 3-6 victory to make it three wins from three. Well done lads!! 

 

FÉ13S

Well done to our Fé13 football team who had a great win aginst Carrigtwohill away on Sunday morning. 

Hard luck to our Fé13 2  team who lost out to a very strong Glanmire team away on Sunday.

Well done to East Cork, who had a good win over Wexford in the Celtic hurling challenge Quarter Final in Chadwicks Wexford Park on Saturday. Well done to our Magpies who played a major role in the victory and to Matthew McSweeney who captained the team. Next up is West Cork in the semi-final

COUNTY HURLING LEAGUES

Our senior and intermediate hurlers are back in league action over the coming days. 

On Thursday night (May 16), our senior hurlers are on the road to Ballinspittle where they will take on Courcey Rovers, before our intermdiates make the short journey to Castlemartyr on Saturday to take on the home side at 3pm.  Best of luck to both teams.

 

JUNIOR FOOTBAL LEAGUES 

MIDLETON 0-7 YOUGHAL 3-8

Our Junior A Footballers were back in league action at home in Clonmult Memorial Park on Sunday night. 

After a difficult first-half we trailed by 3-5 to 0-3 at the break and at the final whistle we lost out by 3-8 to 0-7 after a better second-half display.

This team is back in league action next Wednesday night (May 22) when they take on Cloyne in Midleton at 7pm.

Our junior C footballers were in action on Monday night in Glenville where they lost out narowly, 0-12 to 0-10. This team is back in action this Friday night, away to Killeagh at 8pm.

 

EAST JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 2

FR. O'NEILL'S 3-14 MIDLETON 0-13

A tough night at the office in Aghavine on Tuesday evening. We played against a strong breeze in the first-half, we found scores hard to come by and trailed by nine points to three at the short whistle. A quick goal on the restart set the trend for the second-half and despite getting a few great points we never really threatened the opposition's goal.

Our next league game is on Tuesday next, the 21st away to Watergrasshill at 7.30pm.

IN THE RED OF CORK 

The Cork senior hurlers were back in action on Saturday evening when they hosted Munster and All-Ireland champions Limerick in Pairc Uí Chaoimh and what a night it was for Cork hurling. The Rebels simply had to get something out of this game to stay in the 2024 hurling championship and what a game it was with Cork coming back from four points down to win by two on a score of 3-28 to 3-26 after an epic. Congrats to Tommy (pictured above), Conor, Brion and all the Cork players and management and best of luck against Tipperary in Thurles on Sunday in another must win game.

Mikey Finn, David Cremin, Ter McCarthy and all the Cork U-20s travel to Ennis on Friday night to take on the home side in the semi-final of the Munster Championship at 6.45pm and we wish them the very best of luck. Tipperary await the winners in the final.

 

CAMOGIE

UNDER 12S

Our U12 (Black team) played Bride Rovers this week. A tough battle against a very strong Bride Rovers side had us chasing the game from the off. The girls battled hard and showed a huge improvement in the second half. It wasn’t out day however and Bride Rovers came away with the win. Hard luck girls.

Our U12 (White team) played their first game in Phase 2 of the U12 League at home in Park South against Sliabh Rua on Sunday morning last. It was a beautiful morning and although the girls fought bravely and showed great improvement in their defending, striking and hand passing skills, they didn't succeed in matching the determination of a strong Sliabh Rua team. But we are very proud of them all and can see their improvement in every game - well done girls!

Well done to our U12 (Black team) who played Clonakilty last Sunday morning under beautiful blue skies in Park South. The teams were well matched with Midleton coming away with the win in the end. Well done girls.

UNDER 13S

Our U13 team won their U14B League match against Inniscarra in Park South on Sunday morning. Our girls came out strong from the first whistle and there were plenty of opportunities and great teamwork throughout. Many of the girls were asked to play outside of their regular positions and outside their comfort zone in the second half and we are very proud of their effort and work rate.

UNDER 14S

Our U14s played their third league game of the season against Kilworth on Friday evening in sunny and warm conditions. Our girls came away victorious against a battling Kilworth team. Well done to all the players and to our captain Abbie Fitzgerald on a great display in defence. Excellent work rate throughout by our players and plenty of very impressive sores. Super defence also kept the chances to a minimum and created a great platform for some fine scoring. Well done on a great evening of camogie.

UNDER 15S

The U16B team made it three wins from three with a great win over Douglas on Friday evening in Clonmult Memorial Park. Congratulations to our captain Gabby who was outstanding, scoring six points form play on the night.

PREMIER JUNIOR LEAGUE

TRACTON 1-4 MIDLETON 0-10

Our Premier Junior Team remain unbeaten after a hard-fought encounter in Minane Bridge on Monday night.

In a low scoring and physically tough match we came out deserved winners by three points.

We started very well and two early points by Vivienne Gleeson got us on our way. Further points by Sadhbh Beausang, Lucy Wallace and Abbie Foley saw us race into a five-point lead.

Some errant shooting though by the home side saw us with a 0-7 to 0-1 lead at the break.

Tracton came out strong in the second-half  and got within 2 points  after raising the only green flag of the night. We kept our composure  though and second-half points from Yvonne Abernethy , Sadhbh Beausang and Abbie Foley saw us hold on  for a hard-earned win.

Our defence was superb on the night with Leah Hogan and  Laura Goulding in top form. Lucy Wallace and Yvonne Abernethy were excellent in midfield. Sadhbh Beausang was the pick of the forwards but the group worked hard all night against a tough Tracton rearguard.

Hard luck to Jill Connaughton and Mark O’Sullivan part of the Cork intermediate panel who lost out to Tipperary in the Munster intermediate semi-final last Saturday.

Congratulations to our own Roisin McManus and all the Cork panel and mentors on a great win last Sunday in the Championship versus Tipperary.

 

LADIES FOOTBALL 

UNDER 11S

Our U-11s played a Blitz on a beautiful sunny morning in Park South on Sunday last. The girls showed off their hand passing skills and worked really well as a team. Thanks to St Catherines and Cobh for travelling.

UNDER 12S

Our U-12 Black team hosted Erins Own in Park South on Thursday evening. Fantastic football was played by both teams with Erins Own winning by the narrowest of margins.

HEALTHY CLUB

A big well done to all our club members who took part in the Darkness Into Light walk last Saturday morning.

 

MIDLETON NEEDS YOU AGAIN......

We received this letter from the organisers of a very important protest march this Saturday in Midleton....it would be great if our members (many of whom have ben affected by the flooding in our town) could support this.....

On October 18, 2023 the community of Midleton and surrounding towns and villages were left devastated by the worst floods that have hit the East Cork region in history.

Over 500 homes and 286 businesses were left reeling in storm Babet's wake. Met Eireann categorised it as an orange warning. These entirely insufficient warnings for the impending storm left the area in a state of upheaval. 

Homes were destroyed. Families were split up. Some remain this way as many local houses are still unfit for families to move back into. Businesses were destroyed not for their first but third or fourth times. 

Some businesses closed for good after 40 years of loyal trading to East Cork, unable to bear the burden of more repairs.

Many more will not survive another flood. The safety of our ill and elderly residing in the local hospital was left to a small staff of nurses and doctors, as they moved an abundance of unable patients to a secure place as a flood came streaming through their doors.

Lives were nearly lost on that fateful day and we have been told by Cork County Council that this could and most probably will happen again. We can only hope to be safe next time.

Though the extent was nowhere near as big, the town had suffered devastating floods just eight years previous. So how can officials claim that storms such as Babet, are a one in every 100-year event?

How are we to trust this and risk our community again?

This event has resulted in emotional and mental problems for those impacted and they look set for a continued life of stress, anxiety and worry, unless something is done.

Following the days of the flood, the support from every sporting organisation in Midleton and East Cork area and beyond was nothing short of a miracle. Ye came in ye’re thousands wearing your club colours as ye helped clean the devastation. Ye were a source of comfort and hope to all. This support is the foundation of what our sports clubs are built on, strong community spirit!  

On this coming Saturday, May 18, a protest is being held at 12pm from Corabbey Court/Distillery Car Park marching up the Main Street and finishing in Market Green, near the fire station. Finishing with a few speeches from flooded homeowners and businesses that will take no more than 20 minutes.

You helped us in October and now, MORE THAN EVER, we need your support again. Come support us, wear your club colours with pride on the day, knowing that when this event happened to your families, your friends, your neighbours - you answered the call.

We need change to ensure we won't have to witness women and children washed away in flood waters and lucky to survive.

Or watch grown men sucked down open manholes. Everything destroyed in their homes, the memories they have made with their families for decades - the pictures, the birthday cards, the letters from England and beyond, all gone in ten minutes and why? Because nothing had been done to secure the safety of our homes, our futures, and especially our lives….

WHAT WE NEED AND WANT:

1. Interim measures in place for households and businesses; including repairs and removal of bridges damaged in the flooding. 

2. An Emergency Response Plan.

3. An Early Warning System.

4. An Overhaul of Humanitarian Aid system.

5. An Overhaul of the Insurance Industry.

Please we ask you support this event and spread the word throughout your club to get us support on the street!

I was at a match in Park South on Sunday morning last and there were at least three dogs with parents watching their kids' matches.....the word is not getting out that  NO DOGS (other than assistance dogs) are allowed in our grounds at Clonmult Memorial Park or Park South. Please respect this and spread the word.....
