Midleton Gaa, Ladies Football & Camogie Club News

20 June, 2016

Senior Hurling
Midleton Senior hurlers progressed through the second round of the Senior Hurling Championship on Saturday night in Pairc Ui Rinn.
Midleton started brightly and looked well in control all of the way through the first half going in with a 9 point lead.
The second half saw Newtownshandrum up their game and 15 minutes in scored the second goal of the game bringing them back within 2 points of Midleton.
This sparked a resurgence in Midleton and after a couple of well worked points, goals from Conor Lehane and Brian Hartnett saw Midleton take control of the game again and seal the win. Final score Midleton 3-21 Newtownshandrum 1-15

Fé 12

Round 4 of the U12 league Midleton V Grenagh was played in Midleton last Sunday evening. Our girls played against a strong wind in the first half but managed to go ahead early and hold onto the lead throughout the first half. Some great saves from the Grenagh goalkeeper denied Midleton adding to their scores. The two sides were level with only 10 minutes left but the girls dug deep scoring a goal from a free with 5 minutes to go. Midleton kept up the pressure passing ball after ball into the forward line which paid off with the ball rattling the back of the Grenagh net just before the final whistle.  This was a well earned and well deserved win for Midleton. These girls have gone from strength to strength throughout the U12 league campaign and have showed some great determination and heart throughout.

Ladies Football
Midleton Ladies Football U14 ‘s Crowned County Champions

The U14C Ladies football County final was held on Thursday evening against Keelnameela in what was one of the most exciting games of football played this year.  It was an excellent performance by both teams from the time of the first ball play to the final whistle.

With each score added to the board by Midleton, Keelnameela  came back into attack.  A super goal by Clodagh Finn put Midleton 5 points ahead at half time but this was to be short lived with an early goal from the opposition in the second half. The Midleton girls didn't let it go. They challenged every ball, and at times it was difficult to make out what position Ali Smith was playing in such as was her speed and determination both in attack and defence.  Midleton came back strong and so did the wind ,and two early rebounds off the upright  from Lucy Kenneally , and a wide goal  made us think the second half may not go our way .

Leah Hogan aiding Amy O Neill in defence put it up to the girls from Keelnameela and aided Midleton on the way to victory.  Mischa Daly Harkin didn't leave too many balls pass her and made great efforts to clear every ball assisted by the back line

The final score  does not reflect the effort of the forward line to get past the opposition. At the end of the game each girl played a part in what was a great win

With the enthusiasm of the supporters on the sideline and the determination of the team it was a game which won't be soon forgotten with a score line of ....".................

U13 Hurling Challenge Game:

Midleton 4-04 Sliabh Rua 1-04.

Midleton U13 hurlers travelled to Ballymartle on Wednesday 15th June to take on the local Sliabh Rua team. This game was organised to prepare the magpies for the second half of the Rebel Og Premier 1 U13 league which recommences next week with a game versus Ballincollig. We had a great turnout with nineteen Midleton players making their way to Riverstick for the game. The game started with wet under foot conditions and so scores were hard to come by, but still the standard of hurling was quite good. James O’Sullivan, Evan McCarthy, Cian Murray, James Condon, Phelim Magan and Rory Hartnett all got on a lot of the ball during the first half but the young magpies did find it hard to convert their possession into scores. The first Midleton goal came via Kelvin Barry who got on the end of a move - started by Liam McGrath and included Kane Rowlands and  Ben O’Neill -  to finish it to the roof of the net with great composure. Darragh McCarthy added a fine long range point just before half time.

The second half started with Midleton defence having to stand up to some sustained pressure from the Sliabh Rua attack. But Ciarmhac Smyth, Neil Fitzgerald, Fintan Greenwood, Kane Rowlands and Adam Fay played their part to keep Sliabh Rua scores to a minimum. Mideton registered their first score of the second half which came from Darragh Codd, it was a superb score from all of 50 meters out from the goal. The remainder of the game from a Midleton perspective was dominated by Darragh McCarthy. His three goals and three points all scored from play in the final 20 minutes was to be the difference on the night. Each score superbly executed. Final score Mideton 4-04 Sliabh Rua 1-04.

Midleton Panel: B Saunderson, J O’Sullivan, E McCarthy, A Fay, L. McGrath, N Corcoran, D Codd (0-01), S Bohan, C Smyth, C Murray, D McCarthy  (3-03), K Rowlands, N Fitzgerald, B. O’Neill, R Hartnett, P Magan, J Condon, J Spellman, K Barry (1-00).

U12 Hurling Premier 1

Douglas 7-4 Midleton 3-11

On Sat 18th last we travelled to Douglas for another fixture against strong opposition in this very competitive league. Our lads started well, and added a few points to the scoreboard but Douglas scored two goals in two minutes that didn’t reflect our hard efforts in the first half.

With only a goal the difference at halftime, we were facing into the wind for the second half and Douglas took full advantage of the conditions. Playing with some quick inside forwards, and a really big strong midfielder, they carved out a number of goals that young goalie Dara Fitzgerald could not prevent despite his great efforts.

However, with frees and some opportunist goals from Mickey Finn, Midleton were never too far behind and all our lads kept fighting and working hard right to the end. The team battled for every score but went down to a bigger and more physical side on the day. A lot of positives will be taken from the game and we look forward to the remaining fixtures with confidence.

Midleton Panel: Dara Fitzgerald, Fionn Dalton, Brian O’Connell, David Green, Riain de Barra, David Cremin, Tiarnán Roche, Tadhg Bohan, Cathal Beausang, Dara Scanlon, Odhran Prenter, Niall Lang, Mikey Finn, Caolán Dennigan, Alex Moloney, Conor O’Shea, Sean Fraser, Diarmuid Murphy, Ashley O’Meara, Leo Kelleher

Fe1O’s
We had 27 of our under 10’s travel on Saturday morning last, 18th of June to Carrigtwohil for a hurling blitz.  We split the players into two teams and both groups played three matches each.  The pitches were quiet narrow but all the players enjoyed their mornings hurling.   The first group played Kilta Og, Carrigtwohil and St. Colmans and the second group played Killeagh, Carrignavar and Fr. O’ Neills.  Thanks to Carrigtwohil for hosting the blitz.

Fe 9
Over the last two weekends our Fe 9's have seen plenty of action on the hurling field. We have played Killeagh ( 7th June ) Sars ( 11th June ) and we had a blitz in Castlelyons on Saturday last. The boys have really put their training to good use, with some fine displays in each of the games. This very committed bunch have so far done us very proud each time they take to the field, not only with their skills but also the way they conduct themselves on and off the field. We had games against Youghal, Carrigtohill, Castlelyons ,Kiltha og, Watergrasshill and Mallow . I would to thank all of the above and Castlelyons for giving us a great hours hurling. Training continues each week. Well done again boys.

Primary  School Coaching Programme & Interschool Fun Blitz

Our  ongoing extensive primary schools coaching programme  involves  6 hours of coaching  provided by Midleton GAA   to local primary schools throughout the school year .  The aim of the programme is to introduce and promote participation in Gaelic Games across all ages and abilities.  The success of the programme now in its 8 year is attributed to the vision of the club the cooperation and engagement of the school and the enthusiasm of the children.
In what has now become an annual event an inter school end of ear blitz was held on Wednesday morning last. The emphasis of the blitz is fun and participation.  This year it was the turn of 126 3rd class boys and girls, who gathered at Clonmult Parc for an hour of hurling football and Camogie.   After some ‘extra time’ the blitz ended with a rousing rendition of Amhrán na Bhfiann.
Thanks to all the schools who participated, to the teachers who helped out and thanks to Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann  6th  Class for providing their services as  referees.   Thanks to under 10 coach Gavin Dunlea for helping on the day and to GDA Shane Supple for making himself available to us on the day.
We wish all the boys and girls and teachers a summer of fun and games and we look forward to the next programme in September 2106.
