28 June, 2015

Junior Hurling
Our B hurlers had a fine victory over Sars last Wednesday evening in the Preliminary round of the Championship in Ballinacurra.
Playing against the wind in the first half our lads took the game to Sars, well taken goals early on by David & Willie O Brien put us on the front foot and we led at halftime 3-04 to 0-07.
Despite losing our captain Colm Leahy to injury we maintained the initiative early into the second half. Midway through it looked like a comeback from Sars was on the cards when they reduced the lead to only two points. This wasn’t to be, as our lads finished very strong, two well taken goals by Brian O Sullivan and some great points from our forwards saw us finish very worthy winners in the end by 5-15 v 2-12.
Team: Byran Rossiter, Pat Stack, Sean Corcoran, Jerome Curtin, Brendan Ferriter, Colm Leahy (capt), Joe Collins, Liam Clohessy, Josh Deady (0-01), Brian O Sullivan (2-00), Niall Walsh, Oisin Cotter (0-03), Willie O Brien (1-07, 5 frees), Paul Barry (0-03) & David O Brien (2-00). Camogie
Our 2nd year under 8's played St Fanahan's on Saturday last in St Colman's Community College in what was a very exciting and competitive game, with each side playing brilliant camogie. The coaches were very proud of the effort put in by the 10 girls that turned out for Midleton.
Thank you to St Fanahan’s players, their parents and their coach Edgar who travelled from the Mitchelstown area. Great sport was had by all.
Panel:  Roisin Hayes, Solene Halligon, Alannah Magan, Kate Griffin, Kate Saunderson, Chloe Griffin, Sophie Wall Shanahan, Tia Wall Wallace, Leila Berdassa & Sorcha Cronin.

Our Fe13 girls got off to a great start in Round 1 of the Imokilly U13B1 league against Carrigtwohill on Thursday evening last. This was an away match and we were determined to put all the hard work done over the last few months into practice.  We didn't disappoint and after a great first half with every player giving their all we were on top with a score of 2-2 to 0-2 at the half time break.  Carrigtwohill came out strong in the second half and we were denied a third goal by a great save from the Carrigtwohill goalkeeper. We kept battling and with some great displays of skill and a strong defence in the end secured a win with a final score of 2-3 to 0-4.
Well done to players & coaches.

Ladies Football
Girls U8 Go Game League v Glanmire Monday June 22nd in Midleton Rugby Club
On a nice mid summers night our under 8s played our last league match of the section at home to Glanmire. As we had such high numbers turn up we divided the group into two. Our older girls played on pitch 1 while our younger girls played on pitch 2.
On pitch 1 the girls all got stuck in and their determination was evident right through the evening.
Goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, & forwards all played their part in a great team performance with the girls all working for each other in a very sporting competitive match. Glanmire put in a good match but it was not to be on the night as Midleton came out on top.  Well played girls with the games in our section in the league.  Keep up the good work and practise.  Great to see all the parents and supporters encouraging the girls.
Team : Amy Keeshan, Alex Cahill, Roisin Hayes, Lilly Kelly, Ellianna Moroney,  Ava Barry, Kate o Sullivan,  Katie Tarrant, Chloe Carr, Mia Walsh, Ciara Murphy, Kate Saunderson, Lara Geary,  Emma Keeshan.
On pitch 2 our younger girls went out onto the pitch with great determination.  Some of these girls are new to the game and were very impressive. They showed off all the skills they have learnt at training and got stuck in from the moment the whistle blew. It was a very exciting game. Thank you to the Parents who gave the girls great encouragement from the sideline.
Team: Sophie Kelleher, Johanna Carr, Lucy Murphy, Julie Murphy, Sadhbh Cronin, Aine Ryan, Emma Fitzgerald.

Juvenile

Fe8
Our U8's were on the road again on Saturday morning last, when they made the short trip to Carrigtohill for another round of the Monster Blitz series. With the pitch in great condition, we had a great turnout with four teams in action representing the magpies on what was a great morning for hurling. The boys showed great skill, commitment and sportsmanship throughout the morning with games against Youghal, Kilta Og, Cobh and the host's Carrigtohill. The boys are improving each time they take to the field, which is not surprising due to their commitment to training each week,so keep up the good work. I would like to thank our referee's Cormac O Brien & Coleman Quinn, also to our host's Carrigtohill and local GDA Sean Crowley for another we'll run and organised blitz.

Fe9
The school holidays got off to a flyer when we visited Rostellan last Saturday for another under 9 monster hurling blitz.  We had a smaller group than usual due to holidays etc. but we managed to field three teams of 7 a side.   We played Youghal, Kiltha Óg, and hosts Aghada.  On a carpet like pitch the ball was moving like a rocket from end to end, striking from the hand and on the ground was at a very high standard. Great to see the skill levels continuing to improve reflecting the commitment to training. Thank you to Aghada for hosting a fantastic morning’s entertainment and for providing much welcome refreshment afterwards. Thanks also to our two young referees on the day Padraig and Evan. Missing on Saturday was Luca Brodkorb and Peter Barrett who on the day were competing in the National Athletic Championships  well done to both coming home with  gold medals.

Fe12
Premier 1 Hurling: St Finbarr’s were the opposition last Monday evening in Midleton for our penultimate game of the U12 Rebel Og Premier 1 Hurling League. We were looking for a win which would confirm our qualification into the knockout stages in September. The game started in a welter of excitement with the Magpies almost camped on the Barr’s goal line for the first 10 minutes. But with all of the possession we were not able to convert a lot of the opportunities that came our way. Then finally a shot at goals from Darragh McCarthy was deflected by Ronan Gies to the net. Shortly afterwards the Barr’s responded with a goal of their own. At the half time break Midleton were leading by a goal. The second half of the game produced some superb hurling. Mickey Finn, who came on at full forward at half time, collected a great ball on the edge of the parallelogram and his shot was stopped by an alert Barr’s goalkeeper but Cian Murray pounced on the breaking ball to finish IT on the net. That set us up for a strong finish. At full time we were victorious on a score line of Midleton 2-11 St Finbarr’s 3-05. Best on the night were Brion Saunderson, James O’Sullivan, Shay Bohan and Liam McGrath.
Last game of the league is Monday night versus Sliabh Rua.

Eastern Football League 1: Donoughmore travelled to Midleton on Friday evening to play against us in our third game of the Eastern Football League 1. The Tech field was in perfect condition for the game. Midleton started very brightly against a very fancied Donoughmore team. Ronan Gies, Kelvin Barry and Shay Bohan were in total command around the centre of the field. This allowed Kane Rollins, Evan Kelly and Ben O’Neill gain a lot of possession up front. The Midleton boys picked off some great scores with Ben and Evan converting two goal chances. Evan McCarthy kicked a beauty of a point just before the half time whistle was blown.
The second half had the Midleton Magpies (Donoughmore also wear black and white) battling tooth and nail for every piece of possession so as not to allow the boys from the West back into the game. Adam McCarthy, Rory Hartnett, James Condon and Darra Codd were outstanding.  Final score: Midleton 2-12 Donoughmore 1-04.
Next outing is a trip to the Kingdom to play Fossa U12 football team followed by attending the Munster Football Final.

Fe16
Our hurlers had a great victory over rivals Sars last Friday evening in the Premier 1 Hurling Championship in Kilbarry. There was no separating the teams after an hour and it took extra time to decide the outcome and thankfully it was in our favour on a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-11. We now face Douglas in the next round.
