Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Senior Hurling
Our Senior hurlers are currently putting the finishing touches to their preparations for the County Hurling Championship game v Erins Own fixed for either the 1st or 7th of June. The Championship will be officially launched this week.

We will be defending our title this year, a year when it marks the 100th anniversary of our first County Senior final victory of 1914 albeit in an unsatisfactory manner.
Having been defeated in the previous years final by Blackrock the Magpies defeated Cloughduv, St Mary’s and Collegians in the semi final qualifying to meet the Rockies for the second consecutive year in the final. The County final was fixed for Mallow on the 15th of November when for reasons unknown the Rockies failed to turn up and after some time waiting the referee decided to award the game to Midleton. On the 13th of December this Midleton team assisted by a number of other players represented Cork in the Croke Cup final in Dungarvan when they defeated Kilkenny.
The panel of players who represented Midleton at the time were as follows;
Willie Williams, Jack Grandon, Michael Kearney, David O’ Keeffe, Richard O’ Gorman, Tom Deasy, Jerh Egan, William Twomey, Jim O Connell, William Ahern, Gerald O’ Shea (Capt.), Dan Twomey, Jimmy Ramsell, Paddy Mc Carthy, William O Donovan, Pat O Leary, Bertie Walsh, , John Horgan, Pats Cahill, & Patsy Kirby.

Munster Senior Hurling Championship

Allianz League 2014
There were mixed fortunes for Cork and Waterford in this year's League. Having been relegated to Division 1B at the end of the 2013 season, Cork battled back up again, while Waterford suffered the opposite fate and will replace Cork in 1B for 2015. However, as Cork made it to the All-Ireland Final despite their relegation last year, all is certainly not lost for the Déise!

He played minor, intermediate and senior hurling with Midleton between 1948 and 1961 & senior with Imokilly, captaining the minor county winning team in 1949 and played with the Cork minors the same year. He also played football with the club winning an East Cork title in 1949, throughout his playing career he served on the executive committee and acted as Football and Minor secretary.

Juvenile Notes

Fe 11
Our Fe11s hurlers made their way last Wednesday night 14th May to Knocknaheeny to play St. Vincent’s. It’s hard, especially looking at it from a Midleton supporter’s perspective, not to be envious of the sprawling complex that is home to the Vincent’s club. I’m guessing that they must have at least 4 pitches to choose form.
Twenty four Midleton hurlers turned up on the night. This allowed two games of twelve aside to proceed. From the start the Midleton hurlers dominated proceedings. The young Magpies by half time in both games held comfortable leads. Regardless of the score line both of these games had very tough hurling and so this should really stand to the Midleton players as the year progresses. Second half of the two games followed the same script as the first halves with Midleton dominating the scoring. By the final whistles all of our players will have been happy with their performances.
So far in this league: 6 games played against three clubs and all 6 games won.

Fe 14
Our hurlers play Valley Rovers in the Premier 1 County semi final this Monday night in Carrigaline @ 7.15pm with the winners due to play Duhallow in the final.
Congratulations to our club players Alan Power, Ciaran Evans, Cormac O’ Brien, Sean O Sullivan, Cian Farmer, Mark Daly, Ronan Lynch and selector Alywin Kearney who were all part of the recent success for the Midleton CBS Rice Cup team who defeated Ard Scoil Ris of Limerick in the final in Charleville by 3-07 v 0-07 last Thursday.
