Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Junior Football
Last Saturday afternoon our Junior A Footballers began their Championship campaign with a hard fought win over a gallant Fr O’ Neills team in Shanagarry. In the first half we played some very good football keeping possession well but at times our finishing left us down. The crucial score of the game came when a long delivery from Brian O’ Sullivan was gathered by Cristeoir O’ Cathasaigh who passed the ball across the square for Killian Hurley to fist the ball to the back of the net. We led at halftime by 1-03 to 0-01. The second half was a much tighter affair, O’ Neills replied with a number of points to narrow the deficit but through some resolute defending and counter attacking we saw out the game to win by 1-07 to 0-07.

We now await the outcome of the draw this week to find out our next opponents.
Team: Josh Deady, Joe Collins, Eoin Ferriter, Gavin Bagnell, Shane Ryan, Seamus O’ Farrell (0-02), Brian O Sullivan (0-01), John Keane, Patrick O’ Mahony, Darren Quirke, Padraig O’ Shea, Niall Walsh, Cristeoir O’ Cashasaigh (0-01), Sean Corcoran & Killian Hurley (1-03). Juvenile Notes

Fe14
Our Fe14 hurlers achieved history last weekend on Saturday 19th of April, they won the Cork Hurling Fe 14 A "Feile" for the very first time. At sun -drenched Ballinlough, we outscored a gallant Douglas team in the "Feile" final on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-2.
Midleton hurled well from the outset and having won the "toss" played with the sun to our backs and a slight breeze in the first half. Midleton lead at half time 0-4 to 0-0 and only for some wayward shooting could have lead by more at this stage.
As expected Douglas roared into the game at the start of the second half and created two goal opportunities. Each of these was repelled by strong rearguard defending. This along with 2 pointed frees allowed us to again take control. Midleton who were now dominant scored a fantastic goal with the net being "billowed" in the top right hand corner after a rasping, unstoppable shot. A few minutes later Midleton scored a second "major" with a great team goal. While Douglas tapped over a few points from frees, the result was now well obvious and both teams emptied their benches. At the final whistle, there were great scenes of jubilation at this historic victory, making this the very first  Cork "Feile Hurling" trophy for Midleton.

Along the way, in this competition our results were:
Group Stage: Midleton 4-4, Sliabh Rua 0-2: Midleton 9-11, Aghada 0-1: Midleton 1-8, St Finbarrs 0-1. In the QF Midleton 3-11, Valley Rovers 0-1.
In the Semi Final, Midleton 3-2, Sars 1-3 & in the Final, Midleton 2-8, Douglas 0-2. Throughout these games our team was represented by: Ross Shanahan, Christian Murphy, Alan Power, Cormac O Brien, Sean O Sullivan, Ciaran Evans, Kian Farmer, Griffin Hurley, Cian Murray, Conor O Leary, Evan Rowlands, Jake Shanahan, Sam Quirke, Tommy O Connell (capt), Ross O Regan, Fergus Wade, Mark Daly, Ryan O Riordan, Coleman Quinn, Craig Barry, Niall Higgins, Ronan Lynch, Adam O Connell, David Scanlon, Garry Carroll, Cian Crowley & Eabhan DeBarra.
Well done to the selectors Padraig O Brien, Liam Wade, Paul Britton & Killian O’ Brien for all their hard work and time. We can now look forward to representing Cork possibly in Thurles on the 21st of June.

Fe11
Firstly, big congratulations to the Fe 14’s on their Feile win on Saturday in Ballinlough. Particularly satisfying was the manner in which they won, with a stunning display of hurling.
The Fe 11 hurlers were in Blackpool on Saturday afternoon for their next round of hurling league games. Our 22 players were split into 2 equal teams of eleven. The Glen pitch was bathed in sunshine when the teams took to the field for 1.30pm throw-ins. This series of games turned out to be real competition for the young Magpies. The hurling was excellent throughout the first halves in both games. Ball striking, ground hurling, blocking and score taking were all on display from all sides on the day. Both Midleton sides held solid leads by the half time breaks.
The Magpies faced into a stiffening breeze in the second half but they held on for two well-deserved wins. So, both of our hurling teams have held onto their 100% record of wins thus far in the league. Next up are football matches on Saturday 26th versus Cobh at Cobh.

Fe15
Our hurlers had a great victory over Sars in the Rebel Og Premier 1 League in Midleton last Saturday afternoon, the final score was Midleton 4-16 v Sars 5-09.
