Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Last Man Standing
This year’s competition kindly sponsored by GARDE ENGINEERING based on the Premiership will take place again next weekend; there are approx. 70 people remaining, results and further information are available on the club website www.midletongaa.com .

Senior Hurling
On Sunday afternoon last we played host to Erins Own in the RedFM senior hurling, despite the three lads playing with Cork we fielded quite a strong team. At halftime the score was 2.06 - 1.05 in favour of Erins Own with our goal scored by Padraig O’Keeffe. The second half was a much more even affair and with less than ten minutes to go a Paul Haughney goal looked like earning us a draw at least but Erin’s Own finished the stronger to win by 2.14 to 2.10.
Team: Tommy Wallis, Declan Ryan, Alwyn Kearney, Killian Burke, Seamus O Farrell, Patrick O’Mahony, Eoin Walsh, Peter Dowling, James Nagle, Paul Haughney, Padraig O’Shea, Padraig O’Keeffe, Patrick White, Ian Kennefick and Kieran Mulcahy. Subs Elliot Mulcahy for Declan Ryan, Niall Madden for Kieran Mulcahy and Padraig O’Farrell for Killian Burke (inj). We’d like to wish Killian Burke best wishes on his recovery from what seems to be a suspected collar bone injury.

Junior Hurling
Last Sunday week on St Patrick’s morning our junior hurlers had a great start to their Avondhu/Imokilly Junior league campaign with a comprehensive home victory over Lisgoold on a score line of 4.20 to 0.13.
However in Buttevant last Sunday we unfortunately went down to the home side after a very brave effort on a score of 1.13 to 1.09. Team: Coran Swayne, Joe Collins, Eoin Ferriter, Billy O’Shea, Jerome Curtin, Liam Clohessy, Shane Ryan, Padraig O’Farrell, Sean O’Farrell, Padraic Nagle, Patrick Dunlea, Mark O’Keeffe, David O’Brien, Brian O’Sullivan, Phillip O’Neill and Brendan Ferriter.

U21 Football
Pride of place goes to our U21 Footballers following their great victory over Glanmire in the Corn Clonmult East Cork A Football semi final played in Pairc Ui Rinn last Tuesday. It took us sometime to settle into this game but when we did we displayed some fantastic passages of football from one end of the field to the other. Points from Patrick White and Stephen Moore had us just a point behind at the halftime whistle. The second half was a much different affair as we managed to take some great scores especially fee’s from the boot of Stephen Moore. It was close to going to extra time as Glanmire spurned a few late chances but we held on to win by 0.09 to 1.04.
We now meet Erin’s Own in the East Cork final in Lisgoold on Saturday week @ 3pm, a great effort will be required as we’ll have to do without the services of ace marksman Stephen Moore who has gone to Boston and Killian Burke who received a nasty injury last Sunday

Midleton CBS White Cup success
Congratulations to the Fe15 hurlers of Midleton CBS who won the Munster White Cup Colleges title by defeating St Flannans by 3.14 to 1.08 last Thursday in Charleville. Despite playing in some awful conditions Midleton were by far the better team throughout and really deserved this victory. Well done to our club members who played significant roles in this success. Coach Alwyn Kearney and players, Eoin Maloney, Kevin Mulcahy, Padraig O’Brien, Garan Manley, Christopher Power, Sean O’Leary Hayes, Ryan McConville, David Mulcahy, Sean O’Meara and Conor Evans.

Juvenile Notes

Fe-15
Our Football league has gotten off to a poor start with 2 defeats away to Boherbue and at home to Mitchelstown while we played both games with the bare 15 due a number of injuries and unavailable and there was some very positive performances we also have seen that there will be need to be a big step up in overall performance if we are to challenge for honours later in the year.
We continue to train in the Tech field Tues and Thurs 5pm to 6.30pm each week as we prepare for the start of the hurling league at the start of April with a game v Killeagh more details on date and time to follow.
Congratulations:
Congratulations go to David Mulcahy, Garan Manley, Kevin Mulcahy, Padraig O'Brien and Ryan McConville who were presented with medals along with other panel members last Thursday night in Killeagh Gaa complex for their part in the Imokilly U-14 success in 2012.

Gum Shields
From the 1st of January 2013 it is now compulsory for juvenile players to wear gum shields (mouth Guards). The rule relates to both football training and matches. This ruling has come from GAA Headquarters and anybody not wearing a gum shield and who subsequently gets injured during a match or training session will not be covered by GAA insurance.
GAA recommended gum Shields can be purchased from our juvenile club sponsor Murphy’s Pharmacy in Midleton.
Please ensure that your child has a gum shield for every training session and game.

Training
Most teams are back training now following the Christmas break. Training times can be found on the club website www.midletongaa.com   . On the juvenile team page for your child’s team training times have been posted. We would ask parents to encourage their children to practice during the week even if the weather is bad, parents can practice catching the ball indoors. For players from junior infants to Fe 9 please remember to bring your €2 to training sessions. This money is vital to keep the juvenile section of the club funded.

We hope this year’s event can live up to the quality of the previous years and that the community support it as well as in the past. Please spread the news to those who you think might sponsor a team or a prize.
