On St Patrick’s night the 17th of March a night of celebration will be held in the GAA Club where the 1962 Intermediate County Hurling Champions, 1963 East Cork Minor Hurling Champions and the 1988 All Ireland Club Hurling Champions will be honoured celebrating both 25/50th Anniversary’s.
Also on the night medals will be presented to last years East Cork winning teams, Junior B, Junior C and U21 Hurling along with the players Player of the Year awards.
There will be a hot food buffet and a Disco afterwards in the Hall, tickets for the event are €10 each and are now available from Peader O Brien, Shane Goulding, Michael Crotty, Michael Barrett, Coleman Quirke and the Club Bar.

Fitzgibbon Cup
Last weekend we saw the semi finals of the Fitzgibbon Colleges Senior hurling take place in Galway with many of our club players involved.
On Friday UCC defeated UCD in the first semi, the team included Paul Haughney, Brian Hartnett, and Conor Lehane (0.09, 6 frees). Killian Burke, Tommy Wallis and James Nagle were also part of the UCC panel. In the second semi Mary Immaculate College defeated WIT and Luke O’Farrell finished up with four points.
At Pearse Stadium Galway on the Saturday UCC and Mary I locked horns, after a great battle UCC finished the game the stronger and were deserving winners on a score of 2.17 v 2.12.
Like any sport there has to be a winner and loser and unfortunately we had clubmen on both sides, congrats to the UCC men Conor on a Man of the Match performance scoring 1.09, Paul (0.01), Brian, James, Killian and Tommy, commiserations to Luke who scored two wonderful points and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.
Lads you did us all proud over the last few weeks and we now look forward to seeing ye in the Black & White very soon.

This week 25 years ago in a newspaper interview John Fenton announced his retirement from inter county hurling. There were many nationwide tributes to mark the end of the Cork Hurling legend. Perhaps the most telling one was from the former Cork star Justin McCarthy when he said “I thought he brought a new dimension to the game. He made an enormous contribution to Cork hurling and to the game in general. His record speaks for itself, the number of scores he got and the number of times he would hit the ball during a game. Without him I don’t think Midleton would have won a County championship“.

BINGO for all every Friday night in the GAA Pavilion from 8pm, everyone welcome.

Juvenile Notes

Fe 12 & Fe 11
Our Fe 12 players took on their Fe 11 club mates in a hurling and football challenge on Saturday last.
There was a great turn out and six teams each played two 30 minute games in each code. All enjoyed this start to the season.

Fe 10
Our Fe 10 hurlers made their way to Shanagarry to play St Colemans last Saturday 2nd of March. As usual there was a good turn out and all got their chance to play their part. A good day was had by all and a good start to the year for the lads. Thanks to St Colemans for hosting us and maybe we’ll be able to return the favour in the future.

Gum Shields
From the 1st of January 2013 it is now compulsory for juvenile players to wear gum shields (mouth Guards). The rule relates to both football training and matches. This ruling has come from GAA Headquarters and anybody not wearing a gum shield and who subsequently gets injured during a match or training session will not be covered by GAA insurance.
GAA recommended gum Shields can be purchased from our juvenile club sponsor Murphy’s Pharmacy in Midleton.
Please ensure that your child has a gum shield for every training session and game.

Training
Most teams are back training now following the Christmas break. Training times can be found on the club website www.midletongaa.com   . On the juvenile team page for your child’s team training times have been posted. We would ask parents to encourage their children to practice during the week even if the weather is bad, parents can practice catching the ball indoors. For players from junior infants to Fe 9 please remember to bring your €2 to training sessions. This money is vital to keep the juvenile section of the club funded.

Midleton Juvenile Golf Classic
The dates for the 2013 juvenile Golf Classic have been confirmed as Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th of July. We hope this year’s event can live up to the quality of the previous years and that the community support it as well as in the past. Please spread the news to those who you think might sponsor a team or a prize.

2013 Cúl Camp
Following the standing down of Jim O’Sullivan who previously managed the Cúl Camp arrangements Pa Beausang has stood up to the plate to arrange this year’s event.
The 2013 Cúl camp will take place from July 1st to 5th in the Club.
More details will be available nearer to the starting date.
The club would like to thank Pa for his help with this year’s Cúl Camp
