Midleton GAA News 20th August 2012

20 August, 2012

Senior Hurling Championship
Midleton 2-15 Avondhu 0-17
Our Senior hurlers progressed to the last eight of the Championship on Saturday evening last when they overcame a stern challenge from Avondhu. The game was played in Ballynoe on a well presented sod despite all the recent rain. Avondhu had first use of the wind were quicker to settle. It became apparent from early on that this was going to be a big test for us as Avondhu were a big strong hurling side and so it was to prove. Midleton  despite the slow start found their range with Conor Lehane scoring three points and Paul Haughney chipping in with a couple. Avondhu had the better of the exchanges for the last period of the half and led by two points at half time on a 0-10 to 0-08 scoreline. Midleton supporters would have been happy enough with a two point deficit given the strength of the wind.
Midleton made the better start to the second half and a cracking goal from Conor Lehane looked to be the spark we needed to drive on to victory. Avondhu had other ideas and battled their way back into the game. With only seven minutes remaining the sides were level. The decisive score then arrived as Luke O’Farrell found some space to get a run at goal and finished in style for an excellent goal. Tommy Wallis added the icing on the cake with a monster pointed free right at the death. There was relief all round as the game had been in the melting pot right until those last few minutes.
Overall it was a good performance. Our defence were solid throughout and never looked like conceding a goal. Our attack played in fits and starts and though we got two goals and ten points from play there is a need for better decision making on the ball as we took the wrong option on a lot of occasions. We may not get as many chances in the next round and may need to be making more of them. We await the winners of Douglas and Bishoptown in a qurter final game that is due to be played on September 8th. Again well done to all involved and it was good to see the large Midleton support in attendance.

Juvenile Notes

Fe 10
On Monday the 13th our fe10 hurlers travelled to Pairc Uí Chaoimh to play in a blitz organised by Paudie O’Brien (GDA) and his team. On the day only Cobh and Midleton showed up and to start on a good note both had 23 players. We picked two teams and played two 15 min aside games. Then we changed teams and played another two 15 min aside games. Each player got an hours hurling at Corks HQ. Playing at Pairc Uí Chaoimh seemed to inspire our players who played some great hurling in both games, On the day we got some great scores and the continued signs of improvement were there to be seen. Thanks to Paudie O’Brien and his team for organising the blitz which turned out to be a great morning for our lads.

Summer matches
Matches will continue during the summer holidays despite players and coaches being away. If you are not available for a period of time during the remainder of what we normally call the summer will you please let team managers know. This will help us to attend matches with the required number of players.

Training
Training continues during the summer for all juvenile groups. Check the club website www.midletongaa.com on the juvenile team page for your child’s team training times. Team managers will update teams by text if there are changes. We would ask parents to encourage their children to practice during the week even if the weather is bad, parents can practice catching the ball indoors. Please remember to bring your €2 to training sessions. This money is vital to keep the juvenile section of the club funded.
We have re commenced the coffee morning on Saturdays. Parents with children practicing can get a free cup of coffee and admire their kids in action. Many thanks to those parents who are helping with the teas and coffees.

Club Gear
Midleton GAA juvenile club will have a shop with club playing and leisure wear open each Saturday morning in the clubhouse.
