Midleton GAA notes 28th May 2012

28 May, 2012

Senior Hurling Championship
Midleton 1-15 Bishopstown 1-13
Our Senior Hurlers successfully came through a tight championship opener against Bishopstown on Sunday afternoon in Riverstown. Just as last years corresponding came had come down to the last few minutes so it was to prove again this year. Both teams had started evenly enough. Conor Lehane was to the fore for Midleton and Pa Cronin who was having a great tussle with James Nagle kept Bishopstown in the hunt. An opportunistic goal bt Ciaran Mulcahy gave Midleton an advantage which we held until half time. Midleton had spurned a number of good scoring opportunities in the first half by either poor shooting or electing to shoot from long range while under pressure. At half time we led by four points 1-08 to 0-07 and were good value for it. Luke O’Farrell limped off just before half time with a hamstring strain which we hope is not too serious with the Cork and Tipperary game only four weeks away. Into the second half the game changed when a long delivery into the Midleton squre found its way to the back of the net for a fortuitous score. For the next fifteen minutes Bishopstown held the upper hand but only ever managed to lead by two points. They had a penalty brilliantly saved by Tommy Wallis at a crucial stage when it would have given them a four point lead. Midleton steadied the ship and a number of late points from substitute Paudie O’Keefe, Padraig O’Shea and Conor Lehane saw us over the line and into the fourth round. The fourth round is provisionally fixed for the end of July.

Overall it was a good display without reaching any dizzying heights. Again when the pressure came on we battled away, did not panic and got the crucial scores. It is easy to forget that we are still very young with an average age of under 23. Well done to all involved and to our supporters who were out in force.

Juvenile Notes

Fe-10
On Saturday the 26th we welcomed Nemo Rangers to play in the Fe10 Hurling league. Nemo arrived with 32 players and we had the same and this is always a great start to a game. We picked three teams, two eleven aside and one ten aside and had a great mornings workout. Every player played just under an hours hurling on a beautiful morning with the pitch in fantastic condition for hurling. Thanks to Nemo for the game and we look forward to playing them in Trabeg in the near future, Also a special thanks to all who help with the coffee morning, this is much appreciated by Midleton Juvenile club.

Fe-9
Midleton Boys U9 Vs Erins Own on Wednesday 23rd May. 27 young Midleton hurlers turned up last Wednesday evening to represent their club under the Go-Games format. Two pitches were lined out for the occasion and so both panels split their groups into two teams. The standard of hurling that these underage groups crank out week after week is incredible and once again they did not disappoint on the night. Each team played two games. A game lasts for 30 minutes. And at no stage did the high standard of hurling on display drop, even towards the end of the evening’s entertainment. Again, congratulations to all players, trainers and supporters of both clubs who attended on the night.

Training
Training is in full swing for Juvenile teams. Check the club website www.midletongaa.com on the juvenile team page for your child’s team training times. We would ask parents to encourage their children to practice during the week even if the weather is bad, parents can practice catching the ball indoors. Please remember to bring your €2 to training sessions. This money is vital to keep the juvenile section of the club funded.
We have re commenced the coffee morning on Saturdays. Parents with children practicing can get a free cup of coffee and admire their kids in action. Many thanks to those parents who are helping with the teas and coffees.

Club Gear
Midleton GAA juvenile club will have a shop with club playing and leisure wear open on the first Saturday of each month. This will commence with the indoor training sessions in the Community Centre and then in the Club Pavilion once outdoor training re-commences.
