Midleton GAA News 16th January 2012

16 January, 2012

Off the Booze & On the Ball
A new health initiative has been launched by the GAA in association with the HSE. What people are asked to do is to abstain from alcohol for a period of one month. The initiative is called "Off the booze and on the ball" and offers players and community members the opportunity to raise money for their local GAA club. Midleton GAA have decided that some of the proceeds from this fundraiser will go Midleton Hospital as well as to the Club.
The challenge was extended personally by Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Criostóir Ó Cuana, who launched the event with Minister of State at the Department of Health, Róisín Shortall in Croke Park on November 22. The initiative is being driven by the Association's Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) Programme - a joint initiative with the HSE that aims to reduce the harm caused by the misuse of alcohol and other substances.
Our Club intend to run the event from Monday 16th of January to Sunday 19th of February.
It is hoped that all adult players will take part and will be approached by team management over the next few days. Non players of our Club and all other members of the community are welcome to participate.
For those interested in taking part in the event you can download your sponsorship card from www.gaa.ie/asap or you can obtain one from  Club Secretary  Vincent Reddy or the Club Alcohol and Substance Abuse  Prevention (ASAP) officer - Pearse McCarthy. The sponsorship card must be signed by either Pearse or Vincent in order for you to be eligible to collect sponsorship. All monies are to be returned to the Club.
It is the Clubs intention to organise a number of events over the course of the 4 weeks in keeping with the health aspect of the initiative.  This is a great opportunity for both Club Members and the Community in general to get involved in a wonderful health initiative.
