JUNIOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

MIDLETON 1-8 LISGOOLD 1-10

Our Junior A footballers bowed out of the 2023 Michael O'Connor Motor Factors East Cork Junior A Football Championship on Saturday last when they went down narrowly to Lisgoold in an evenly contested encounter in Aghavine. This game was supposed to be played on the Friday night but due to storm Betty it was moved to Saturday afternoon.

We played with the gale force breeze in the opening half but things didn't go to plan early on as Lisgoold hit us for 1-1 in the opening nine minutes but points from Ross O'Regan, Cormac Beausang, Cathal Gunning and Johnny Comer saw us tail by a single point at the midway point, 0-4 to 1-2.

Christian Daly scoring our goal.

Lisgoold opened the second-half scoring with a point before Christian Daly struck for our only goal of the game moments later. Cormac Beausang and Johnny Comer swapped points with Lisgoold to see us lead by 1-6 to 1-5 after 40 minutes. Futher points, again from Cormac Beausang and Johnny Comer saw us level the tie with nine minutes to play, 1-8 each.

Unfortunately this was to be our last score of the game and Lisgoold struck for two points in the final four minutes to edge a very closely fought affair by two points and book their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Hard luck to Johnny, his selectors and the players who put in a great effort in 2023.

Scorers: Christian Daly 1-0, Cormac Beausang and Johnny Comer 0-3 each, Ross O'Regan and Cathal Gunning 0-1 each.

MIDLETON: Pa White, Adam Fay, Sean O'Leary Hayes, Cian Crowley, Mark Daly, Luke Dineen, Alan Power, Eoin Moloney, Ross O'Regan, Cathal Gunning, Aaron Mulcahy, Evan McGrath, Cormac Beausang, Chistian Daly, Johnny Comer. Subs used: Adam Daly and Brion Saunderson.

FÉ15S

FÉ15 C3 HURLING LEAGUE V BALLINORA

A first ever trip to Ballymah last Saturday saw the Fé15 hurlers take on their Ballinora counterparts in the latest round of the C3 league. Despite the blustery and wet conditions.

an impressive performance saw the lads emerge as convincing winners on the day, with goals coming from James Carey, Patrick O’Dowd, Bradley O’Brien, Dara Cahill and captain Sean Gregory, The panel was: Michael Allegrini, Rian Casey, Jason Morley, Adam Spillane, Patrick Collins, Scott Dunlea, Fionn Bohan, Jack Walsh, Harry Waterman, Dara Birdthistle, Patrick O’Dowd, Dara Cahill, Sean Gregory (captain), James Carey, Bradley O’Brien, Cian Hogan, Rory Nolan and Patrick Spellman.

Fé15 EAST DIVISON 1 FOOBALL SHIELD SEMI FINAL V ST. COLMANS

St. Colmans were the visitors on Monday last for the semi-final of the Fé15 Football Shield. The lads started well with early goals from Michael Allegrini and Senan Carroll. The lads continued their dominance of the first-half with further goals coming from Ewan Murphy and Harry Waterman. Half-time score was Midleton 4-7 St. Colmans 1-2.

Turning to play against the breeze in the second half, the lads found the scores harder to find. The visitors began to enjoy their own period of dominance but were kept at bay on a number of times through some fine goalkeeping by Sean Gregory. A second goal from sharpshooter Ewan Murphy and a converted penalty from captain Dara Birdthistle steadied the ship and the lads ran out winners on a final scoreline of Midleton 6-11 St. Colmans 4-8.

The panel was: Sean Gregory, Bradley O’Brien, Jason Morley, Dara Cahill, Harry Waterman, Shane O’Mahony, Patrick O’Dowd, Senan Carroll, Max Murphy, Jack Walsh, Dara Birdthistle (Captain), Scott Dunlea, Ewan Murphy, Michael Allegrini, Alex Horgan, Fionn Bohan, Rian Casey, Patrick Collins, Riain McCormack, Ciaran O’Brien.

Well done to Senan Carroll (pictured below) who was part of the Cork Rebel Óg Fé15 football team that beat Kildare in the Adam Mangan Offaly Shield.

Good luck to Max Murphy, Senan Carroll and Shane O’Mahony who are all part of the Cork Rebel Óg Fé15 hurling teams that are competing in the Arrabawn competitions in Tipperary this Saturday.

CAMOGIE

UNDER 9S

The sun was shining down on Park south on sunday morning after storm Betty had drenched it on Friday night. Our U-9s played watergrasshill for the seconnd time this year and once again some great camogie matches were played between the two teams. We had 44 girls playing and all did superbly.

UNDER 10S

Our U-10 girls played a Go Game away to Cobh. Great battling from our little Magpies against a tough opposition. Mighty tackling, blocking, hooking and striking all on display. The girls are getting stronger with every game. Well done to all. Thanks for the parents for travelling to support.

UNDER 11S

Our Fé11's travelled to Erin's Own to participate in a blitz with Erin's Own, Bishopstown and St Finbarr’s.

Midleton had two teams and each team played three matches - games were competitive against strong opponents but well done to all the girls who held their own and did themselves proud.

Thanks also to Amber, Ali and Lena from U12s who played with us on the day.

Our next blitz is on this Sunday August 27 in Park South against Dungourney and Carrigtwohill. All support is welcome!

UNDER 12S

Our U-12 (black - above) team traveled to Charleville for a league fixture on Saturday evening. All of the girls showed great skill and determination to comfortably come away with a win.

Our U-12s (white - below) team had a good victory over Douglas in Park South on Tuesday evening. From the defence all the way up through the full forwards, there was a great team effort with hand passing, blocking, and following though to the goal. Superb help from our U-11s who joined us for the match! Up the Magpies!

UNDER 14S

Our U-14s opened their championship campaign on Sunday evening with a trip to Brinny to face Valley Rovers. It was an excellent game and the action was end to end. Our girls showed great spirit to come out on top in the end.

Congratulations to captain Amy (pictured below) who’s goal was the difference.

U-14 CORK SQUAD

Huge congratulations to Ciara, Sarah and Gabby who were excellent as part of the U-14 Cork Dearg team, winning the Orla McDonagh cup in Thurles last Saturday. Well done girls.

LADIES FOOTBALL

JUNIOR A CHAMPIONSHIP

It was East versus West  last Sunday at Clonmult Memorial Park. The ladies from O'Donovan Ross (Skibereen) represent a step up in competition for the ladies from Midleton. It’s a well earned and deserved place for the Midleton ladies now at Junior A level. It was a testing first-half for the Midleton ladies. Unforced errors, early season jitters call it what you want but Midleton’s ladies were playing a slick Skib outfit for sure. It’s not that Midleton are not good going forward they are. The Quirke sisters are playing well and in the same breath Midleton are defending well too but it was Skib who were running better off the ball and in essence that was the difference. Skib had their homework done, Ava McAullife was being tightly marked.

Half-time Midleton 0-3 O’Donovan Rossa 2-10

A tale of two halves. Midleton were far more assertive and determined in the second-half. Midleton were closer more cohesive and finally looking like a Junior A Team. Lucy Wallace was a threat and scored a fantastic point after 40 minutes. As Midleton raised it in the seconnd-half they frustrated Skib who had it no way as easy as they had it at the start of the game.

That said they scored too but the final score is a reflection not just a good Skib team but how the Magpies can take heart from a great second-half. They’ll need to replicate that to perform at this level and they absolutely can. Final score: Midleton 0-6 O’Donovan Rossa 3-12.

UNDER 11

Well done to our U-11 girls who played great football in their match against Rockbán.
