Juvenile

Fé8

On Saturday morning we welcomed Lismore under 8s to the club on what was a great morning for hurling. 30 young magpies togged out and were involved in some very competitive games against our Waterford opposition. As our lads continue their development it was the the first time they played a competitive match where raising the ball and striking out of the hand was allowed. We would like to thank Lismore for making the trip and look forward to the return fixture before the season finishes up. We would also like to thank the parents who both bought along and helped out with the refreshments that were thoroughly enjoyed by all after. Training continues at 7pm on Thursday in the cricket field and 10am Saturday mornings in the club.

Fé12

On Saturday week last we made the trip to Waterford for the Tommy Finn Cup Tournament, held in Clonea Power Gaa Club. We were playing in Group 1 with Mooncoin ( Killkenny ), Formilewater (Waterford ) and Carrick Swan ( Tipperary ). First up we played Mooncoin, this was a very good standard hurling with some brilliant passages of play as well as individual skill. Despite the best efforts we came out the wrong side on a score line of 4-05 to 1-08. Next up we played Fourmilewater. This seemed to be a turning point for the boys. The hard work from the previous game continued and we came away with a comprehensive victory of 6-12 to 03 pts. This lead  us to a show down with Carrick Swan, who had earlier beaten Mooncoin. This was a cracking game of hurling. We started the game well with some fine scores from Peter Barrett and  Cian Stack this helped us settle quickly, unlike the first game against Moocoin. We lead at half time 6 pts to 4pts. On the resumption the game took on a life of its own a brilliant Barrett goal and points from Conor Finn, Stack and Barrett again put us in the driving seat at 1-09 to 5pts with 8 mins remaining. Carrick Swan were not going to lie down easily and fought back to within a point, with only 4 mins remaining. The boys weathered the storm lead by Nicky Coughlan, Josh Foley and the rock solid Eoin Ahern at the back, this gave our forwards the ball they needed. A goal from Matthew Herbert, followed by Stack, Finn points and another from the fantastic Barrett. This gave us a 2-12 to 1-09 victory. At the final whistle there was great joy as we qualified for the Quarter Finals the following weekend. We travelled down last weekend without Peter Barrett, Goalkeeper Diarmud Lester and Conor Finn. We were drawn against St Marys of Tipperary. Also returning were Mathew McSweeney ( injured ) and Josh Hogan ( holidays ) both had missed the previous week. We picked up where we left off the previous weekend . From the throw in we were in determined mood, Josh Foley,Nicky Coughlan, Sean Crowley and Josh Hogan took the game to our Tipperary opponents. One or two fiery exchanges from both sidelines added to this Cork Vs Tipp affair. At half time we lead 6pts to 4pts. On the resumption we took control the game and finished with a dominate performance. We progressed to the Semifinal on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-05. The semi final proved to be a bridge to far despite the best efforts of all the lads eventually losing to Piltown of Kilkenny on a scoreline of 6-06 to 2-10. We had some outstanding performances from all the players which gives us coaches great satisfaction. This was a big step up in standard and the boys proved they can hold their own. They wore the famous Black and White jersey with pride , which bodes well for the future.  A big thank you also to the parents who gave us great support over the two weekends and at all the matches we play. Also to Senan Carroll (U11 ) for helping us out. He also played a great part in the Quarterfinal and semi-final. A special mention also to our own Peter Barrett who won the Player of the Tournament. This was well deserved as Peter shows great leadership on and off the field and was picked by the coaches of the teams we played. Well done Peter.  PANEL – Eoin Ahern, Shane O Mahony, Josh Foley ,Matthew McSweeney, Sean Crowley, Peter Barrett, Cian Stack, Cian Fitzgerald, Conor Finn, Nicky Coughlan, Diarmud Lester, Lochlann Stewart, Matthew Herbert, Senan Carroll, Josh Hogan, Darragh Cronin.

Camogie

Our County representatives were busy again last weekend with Aoife Fitzgerald, Ruthie Hennessey, Jill Connaughton and Saoirse Ni Theangana in action in Wexford with the Cork U14’s. Yvonne Abernethy lined out with the Cork U15’s in the Munster blitz in Mallow on Saturday, while Vivienne Gleeson was part of the Cork U16’s who overcame Tipperary in the Ragg on Sunday. Well done to all the girls, it is great to have such continued representation at County level.

U11’s: We were welcomed to Castlemartyr on Tuesday evening for an U11 challenge match. Both sides put n a super performance with some fine camogie skills on display. Thanks to Castlemartyr for hosting, to Barry Day for refereeing and to Jay Keating for the photos.

U15’s: We met Cobh on Tuesday evening for the second match of the Imokilly U15 league, the girls put in a great effort but came up short on this occasion. Well done to all the girls involved.

South Park Development

Works continue on our new development in Park South.

Entrance ground works are progressing well with the footpath to the Carpark almost finished.

The entrance has been opened to the roadway and the entrance wall built. Pillars have been erected with gates yet to be put in.

Services pipes are also in place going to the Carpark area which will feed the rest of the complex as needed.

New water drainage (see piping photo) has been laid. This replaces the old pipeless drain which left the ground open.

The two lower pitches at the Beechwood side have been levelled and ripped. Work on the pitch drainage system will begin this week.

It is vital that we support the fundraising drive in order to keep the works progressing.
