Munster Hurling Championship

Today saw the Minor and Senior Cork teams begin their Munster Hurling Championship with both games taking place in Pairc Uí Chaoimh. The Minor game threw in at 2pm and saw them defeat Tipperary with a full time score of Cork 2-27, Tipperary 1-18. The Senior match had a 4pm throw in. Unfortunately the full time score was not in the rebels favour. Full time score was Cork 1-24 Tipperary 2-28. Midleton had two players involved on the day. Conor Lehane on the Senior panel and Bríon Saunderson on the Minor Panel. Next up for both team is an away fixture next Sunday to Limerick.

Junior A Football Championship

Our Junior A footballers began their Championship campaign with a fixture against Carrignavar. A close contest which saw the half time finish with only a point between the teams; Midleton 2-11 Carrignavar 2-12. It was a similar story in the second half and nothing could separate the sides at full time with both teams finishing level at 2-11 apiece. Extra time was played but it was not to be for the magpies. Full time score Midleton 2-12 Carrignavar 3-14.

On Saturday morning we travelled to the 4G pitch in Pairc ui Chaoimh to take part in our very first Gaelic Football Blitz. This was a great experience for the 33 young Magpies. We had 4 Teams playing 3 games each in the hour. Our opponents were Bishopstown,Eire Og and Douglas. It was a very enjoyable morning and our lads displayed some very good passages of play and got good scores as well.

We would like to thank Daniel Cagney our own Club Young Whistler for keeping control of the Games at the Blitz. Once again Thanks to all the parents and Coaches who were able to make the trip to the blitz. After a few weeks of Football Training we will now turn our attention to the Hurling.

The Fé11 boys will have the next round of Davy Hogan Street league matches to look forward to on Wednesday next.

On Monday evening last we played Fr O Neills in the next round of the Eastern Football league. This was a very fine display from the lads. The was free flowing football played throughout, with some fine displays from Daniel Donovan, Jake Kirby, captain Shane O Connor, Rhys Quill and Aaron O Driscoll. We scored really well all through the game with some fantastic passing from the hand and foot by all the players. We won on a score line of 3 - 09 to 2 - 04. A particular mention must go to Daniel Donovan who scored 1-08 on the night. Well done again lads on a great performance.

On Sunday morning last we travelled to The Bleach to take on Valley Rovers in the C3 hurling league. In what was a beautiful morning for hurling. The lads took the game to our opponents and settled well with some fine scores from captain Darragh Cronin, Cian Stack and Tiago Fleming. With our backs playing well, lead by Matthew McSweeney, Lochlann Stewart,Rian O Driscoll and Eoin Hurley, we battled hard and went in at the short whistle ahead and deservedly so. More of the same in the second half with both teams competing well for the ball. Strong play from Cian Fitzgerald, Josh Foley, Tomas Geary, Rory O Connor to mention a few, we finished strong. Overall it was a very good outing for the lads.

Fé14

On Saturday morning the Fe14 had a home football game against our close Neighbour’s Youghal. This was a tense affair from the start with the magpies getting off to a great start with points from Zach Smith and Rory Lester. Youghal responded with two points of their own but a goal from Alex Moloney seemed to spur our lads on. Oscar Brennan kicked some wonderful points three in total saw the home side nicely on top at halftime on a score line of 2-7 to 0-3.
Youghal got off to a great start in the second
Half scoring 1-2 without reply. However Midleton were put at ease with a goal from Zach Smith and followed by another from Darragh Fitzgerald saw the Midleton side finish strong. A special mention must go to Darragh Higgins who was flawless between the sticks. This was at times a feisty match but Our lads played some great football. The mentors would like to thank all players and parents for their support. Well done to our team player Bríon Saunderson who played in goals for the Cork Minor Team v Tipperary today.

Davy Hogan Street Leagues

The first two rounds of this years Davy Hogan Street Leagues were played last Wednesday night at Midleton GAA Club. This competition is for boys eligible to play Fé11 & Fé10 and has been run within the club for many years now. This year we have 98 boys involved across 6 teams with over 20 coaches. The team captains this year are Max Murphy (Owenacurra), Darragh Mullins (St. Enda’s), Cian Lawton (Garryowen), David Kelly (Sons of Rest), Shane O’Mahony (Saints) and Senan Carroll (Forkums). Each team name is derived from an area of Midleton with some interesting stories about their origins. Locals say that the team name ‘Forkums’ came from farm labourers who would gather in the area of Connolly Street looking for employment each day. Back then a large amount of the farm work would involve the use of forks, hence the name ‘Forkums’ was attributed to those farm labourers. Round 3 & 4 of the Davy Hogan Street League takes place next Wednesday at 7pm in Midleton GAA Club.

Ladies Football
