Ladies Football (Peil Na mBan)

Midleton girls pull out all the stops to capture East Cork U16 C Championship Final.
Played in wet conditions on top of Cobh on 11th December against an equally committed Erins Own team.
After defeating St Colemans in the Semi-final on 04th November, this final was a long time coming and it didn’t disappoint.
A special thanks to Cobh GAA for making their flood lit pitch available when most other pitches were closed. Both teams were well supported on the night and as it’s an open pitch, both sets of supporters had to set up camp on the side line and this only added to the tension and excitement, so much so that the referee had a hard job keeping people off the pitch.
The game started at a blistering pace set by the Erins Own girls who ripped open our defence and within five minutes were 1:1 to no score ahead. We could have been going home two minutes later, only for a spectacular save by Diane helped by the mud in the goalmouth where the ball stuck on the goal line and scrambled out by Denise.
After that we got to grips at midfield with Sadhbh and Rachel delivering quality ball to our forwards where Clodagh started to dominate at centre forward, and we started to pull back their lead. After fifteen minutes we had their lead down to 2 points and the last qtr of the 1st half was nip and tuck, with the ball moving quickly up and down the field. Five minutes before the break the game changer came in the form of a cracking goal to the roof of the net from our own Misha. We went in at the break 2 points up.
The second half was a cracker. We thought that the heavy underfoot conditions would take its toll on the girls and fitness might come against us.
But again we were proved wrong, they got stronger as the game went on. Everyone worked their socks off, from the backs who defended as if their lives depended on it and the forwards tracking back to offset against Erins Own counter attacks.
This game was much closer than the final score of 4:11 to 2:9 might suggest. In fairness to Erins Own as much as they tried and they tried, they just could not break down our defence, as they went after the goals to get them back on top. Those goals never came. Our girls were relentless and ground out an unbelievable win.
Diane in goal was incredible, saving us on more than one occasion, and her penalty save in the second half was the inspiration to drive on the rest of the team. The full back line of Megan, Denise and Leah were unerring and kept the defence tight at the back. Ellen, Vivienne and Jodie worked tirelessly for the hour and made it very difficult for the Erins Own half forward line to gain any momentum. How Sadhbh and Rachel kept going, no one will ever know. They ran until they could run no more. Half way through the second half, Rachel switched with Clodagh who had a phenomenal game and for those at the game didn’t have to question her selection in this year’s Cork U16 team.  Lucy played the captains part and put over some great scores. Misha ran in for 2 goals and had an incredible game. Neassa and Aoife were full of running and linked up well winning most of the 50/50 ball. Selena at half forward was like a seasoned player with her tracking and support play a sight to behold. She did not stop running for the hour and could have gone on for another 60 mins if needed. Orla at full forward was a thorn in the Erins Own side, ever threatening, scoring a screamer of a goal and would have got more if we could have fed her with more ball. Moved to center forward and made a huge impact.
This was really and truly a team victory with 16 heroes on the night. A great way to end a season that started in January.
 Final Score 4:11 to 2:9
Team: Diane Perkins, Megan Kelly, Denise Collins, Leah Hogan, Ellen Ryan, Vivienne Hogan, Jodie Keegan , Rachel Quirke, Sadhbh Beausang, Lucy Kenneally, Clodagh Finn, Selena O’Riordan Hernandez, Misha Daly Harkin, Orla Evans, Neassa Ni Briain, Aoife Fitzgerald

Camogie (Camogaiochta)

Midleton GAA, Camogie & Ladies Football, annual food appeal for St. Vincent de Paul.

Since the end of November we have been accepting donations through the club shop and the various social events for our annual food appeal for St. Vincent de Paul. This is the third year we as a club have been running the appeal and again this year our members and their families have generously donated. Trolley loads of everyday staples and lots of treats for Christmas were handed over to V de P on Saturday morning, 15th December. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who gave so generously and also to acknowledge the work of the members of the St. Vincent de Paul group locally who work hard on the ground all year round to ensure that nobody is left without.

Happy Christmas to you all.

Juvenile

On Saturday December 8th the Midleton Juvenile GAA Club hosted their awards social for their Players aged from 10 to 16. It’s a night that sees the coming together of players, their families, coaches and committee members to celebrate the end of another years playing season and acknowledge the participation of all players in the various competitions and tournaments throughout the year. On arrival the players were served food and refreshments with Juvenile Club Chairperson Paudie O’ Brien getting proceedings underway at 7.30.The hall was packed and after welcoming everyone Paudie acknowledged what a great year it had been for the juvenile club. A special mention was given to our Fe13 C3 team on winning the C3 league and to our Fe15 P1 team who won the Clubs first Championship title at this grade. Team Managers from the various groups called up their players to receive their medals and to take to the stage for their team photographs. Thank you to Senior Players Cormac Beausang and Tommy O’ Connell for attending on the night and presenting the Juvenile players with their medals.

Finally we bidded farewell to our Fe16 players. As a juvenile club our first aim is to get new young players into the club, provide them with plenty of fun, coach them in the skills of the game and keep them interested. This group of players started back in 2007 and have now concluded their 11 years with the Juvenile Club. These 21 players will move to adult club next year for minor grade. They didn’t win Silverware this year, but were presented with a framed photograph capturing some of their highlights from their time as juveniles; playing in Croke Park, winning the Fe13 P1 League, winning the Fe14 P1 League, winning the Fe14 Challenge Cup, winning the Fe14 Regional Feile completion in Abbotstown and winning the Fe15 C3 league. Well done to all the players, they are a credit to themselves, their families and the Club. We wish you all well.

Club Chairman Paudie concluded the evening by thanking everyone for attending, congratulating all the players and paid thanks to everyone who supported the club in anyway throughout the year.
