Midleton Hurling & Football, Ladies Football & Camogie Club NEWS

21 October, 2018

Senior Hurling
Next Sunday afternoon we return to Walsh Park, Waterford after thirty five years when we first competed in the Munster Club Senior Hurling Championship, we are taking on the Waterford champions Ballygunner at 1.30pm.
Back in 1983 Mount Sion were the kingpins of Waterford hurling having won the Munster Club title in 1981 but there is no doubt who the current standard bearers are with Ballygunner having recently completed five county titles in a row.

There’s no doubt that it’s going to be a tough task for our lads after our recent County final loss but I’m sure they’ll look forward to the challenge and recognise the honour of representing Cork in this competition. In the past we have met Waterford sides such as Mount Sion, Ballyduff Upper and Lismore but this will be our first time playing Ballygunner in a competitive game. With inter county players Padraic & Phillip O’Mahony, Stephen O’Keeffe and Barry Coughlan available to them we are aware of the challenge but look forward to it.
We ask our supporters to wear your colours and to travel to the Deise to get behind the  players and management in this game.

The executive of the Club would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who assisted and supported us in the preparation of the team, Hurleys Super Valu, O’ Briens Garage,
Mc Carthy Investment Services, Noel & Patrick Howard, Pat Walsh Paints, Eamon Crotty Financial Services, Jacko’s Bar, East Cork Crane Hire & Dwane Sliotars.
There are a number of other individuals who wish to remain anonymous and we thank them also. Thanks to the many individuals, GAA Clubs and other Sporting organisations who wished us well through via email, Twitter and Facebook over the last number of weeks.

Camogie (Camógaíochta)
U9: We had an end of season party in Airtastic on Friday night. A great evening of bouncing was had by all. It was back to business on Saturday morning with a blitz in Cobh in what will most likely be the last outing for the girls this year. Once more the girls gave it everything, displaying great skills and tacking on some super scores, in games against Bishopstown and two teams from Cobh. This team has come a long way since we started in the ball alley last February and should enjoy a well-earned break over the winter until we resume again in the New Year.

U10: we travelled to Eire Óg on Saturday morning last to play the hosts. It was another great game of camogie and another great performance from our girls. This brings our U10 season to an end. Well done to all the girls on a great season and a big thank you to all the parents for attending and supporting the girls throughout. We look forward to doing it all over again next year as U11’s.

U14 & U16’s await league fixtures. Training times for the week ahead will be communicated to parents. Follow us on facebook Midleton Camogie Club and twitter @MidletonCamogie

Ladies Football (Peil na mBan)
Cork County Minor  C Championship Quarter Final
Our girls travelled to Bishopstown last Tuesday night to take on the 'town girls in the Cork County Minor Quarter final. The Bishopstown GAA complex on the night was a haven of activity with games being played on all pitches. The curtain raiser to this game was a very entertaining U21 hurling challenge game where Valley Rovers lined out against Bishopstown and this truly added to the occasion. Our girls took to the field full of confidence and ability after an unbeaten run in the East Cork Minor B league, where we finished top and thus qualified for County Championship in the C Grade.
The Bishopstown girls proved to be a big step up to any previous opposition, and right from the start tore into us, attacking us in waves. We were 1:2 down within the first seven minutes as they had us running ragged around the pitch. The introduction of Denise into full back allowed Deirdre to move to mid field and we started to find ourselves in their half of the field. We then started to play football. A brace of points brought us to within 2 points, but we were finding it difficult to contain their midfield pairing who were full of running. The way the game went we found ourselves in our half of the pitch for long periods. But it was a cracking exciting contest. Half Time Score: Midleton 0:5 v Bishopstown 1:7.
The work rate of our girls was immense. We were chasing this game from start to finish and at no stage ever gave up. The rear guard was led by Rayanna between the posts who was unbelievable on the night, saving a penalty and several goal line clearances. In reality we should have been down about 8 goals at the break but only went in at half time down five points, with Bishopstown having most of the play. We could have been going home at this stage only for our dramatic defending and the work rate of the girls tracking their players all over the field. The second half started in the same format as the first with Bishopstown dominating the first ten minutes and ran in for two goals. We did have chances but at times our decision making came up a bit short, they kept up the pace for the whole game and interestingly we owned the last ten minutes. It wasn't to be our night in the end however and the final score flattered Bishopstown. There were loads of positives to take for our girls going forward and, we will work on these and we will surely get back to winning ways in no time. They could have done no more and on the night could not fault any one of our girls, they were absolutely fantastic, worked as a team, supported each other, kept positive and made it very difficult for the Bishopstown girls who I'm sure will have been stiff and sore Wednesday morning. Some of our girls also have some war wounds, Molly had to retire injured, as did Ellen who actually got injured during the warm up and Abby with a chest infection coming into the game did not help our cause but the rest stepped up. These are truly a great bunch of individuals who on the night made us proud to be associated with them.
Well done girls, now we'll look to more important matters with the East Cork Minor League Final still to play against Youghal and we'll take this good form into that final. To quote Henry Ford "If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself."
Full-time Midleton 1-6 v Bishopstown 3-13.
Team:  Deirdre Corcoran, Clodagh Finn (1-1), Aoife Franklin, Lucy Wallace (0-1), Roisín O'Callaghan, Leah Hogan, Vivienne Gleeson, Mischa Daly Harkin, Jodie Keegan O'Connell, Molly Beausang (0-2), Sadhbh Beausang (0-1), Rayanna Power, Lucy Kenneally (0-1), Abby Quirke, Rhea Buckley, Laura O'Leary, Ellen Ryan, Denise Collins & Caoimhe Cronin.

UNESCO status for Hurling
A delegation from the GAA were in Paris last Thursday hoping to secure UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status for hurling. Uachtaran Cumann Luthchleas Gael, John Horan, Director of Games, Pat Daly, Acting Camogie Association CEO Louise Conlon, historian Daniel McCarthy, Director of UCD's World Heritage Management and Conservation programme, Claire Cave, UCD Professor of Archaeology, Aidan O'Sullivan, and former Cork hurler John Fenton travelled to France alongside Minister for Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan.

"The Intangible Cultural Heritage status is something that is provided by UNESCO," Daly explains "You have a World Heritage site like Newgrange, that would be recognised by UNESCO. That is a site, it exists, you can see it and it is a permanent reality. What we are talking about here is intangible cultural heritage. It is stuff that gets passed down through the medium of hurling."Things like idenity, the generation of social capital, things like cultural diversity, the propagation of holistic lifestyle and decent value systems. That is the kind of world you are in to here." Daly stresses the value and role hurling plays in Irish society. "I suppose the case we are making is that hurling has been around a long time, it is pretty much unique to Ireland," Daly adds. "It is a distinctive game and if you mention hurling in this country it is pretty much tied up with Irish identity and everything that goes with that.
"Based on the history of the game and the societal impact it has and its contribution to identity and social capital and the identity to communities, we believe it merits recognition by UNESCO in an intangible cultural heritage context."It is a big reputational thing, but you'd still have to go out to promote the game. The fact that uileann piping got UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status last year.

"Basically it is recognition of the uniqueness of uileann piping. Where it has come from and its contribution to the world of music. What we are talking about here is something comparable, it is recognition of the contribution hurling has made to society."

The GAA has worked closely with the government ahead of the presentation according to Daly. "This cannot be put forward by the GAA, it has to be put forward by the government," Daly states. "Josepha Madigan, The Minister for Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht, has put hurling forward for what is now as inscription, that hurling would get inscribed on to this list. "John Fenton will be contributing, Aidan O'Sullivan is an archaeologist in UCD, he will be contributing. Louise Conlon, the acting Camogie CEO, and Claire Cave, she is an academic from UCD as well, they will all be contributing."
Fenton, who scored one of the most iconic goals in hurling history in 1987, continues to promote the game. "John Fenton was involved in a Hurling Development Committee that started this process a couple of years ago, he is wearing that hat because he was very keen for this to be progressed," Daly remarks. "He scored a phenomenal goal and is very much involved with his club all the time down in Midleton. He is basically representing the grassroots, if you like, of hurling outlining what is going on at that level.

"Louise Conlon is doing something comparable from Camogie with a slightly different perspective. Aidan O'Sullivan is looking at the archaeology of hurling and where it has come from and how long it has been around for.
"Claire Cave she basically deals with UNESCO saying why hurling is unique and why it is unique to Irish identity and why it merits inscription. Daniel McCarthy is also part of the delegation. Dr Padraic Quinn and Daniel McCarthy were the initial movers behind this."

Fe 8
We returned to Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday as we participated in the U8 Go Games hurling blitz. All our players got to play three games on the 4G pitch and every one of them played very well, but most importantly they enjoyed the experience. Our panel is developing a great work ethic and skill levels. A big thank you to the young whistlers who travelled on the day and for officiating several games.

C3 Hurling Final
Riverstown under lights on Wednesday evening last was the venue for C3 Hurling Final against Sars, earlier in the competition these two teams had played out a thrilling draw in Clonmult Park so it was two evenly balanced teams that took to the field with all to play for. The early exchanges were tense with both teams fighting for every ball. Early pressure from us resulted in an excellent point from play from Matthew Gregory. Daniel Garde followed with a pointed free and the same player scored a neat point from play shortly thereafter. With Eoghan Fraser having an excellent game at centre back Fionn Kelly and James Mc Sweeney edging the midfield battle at this stage we certainly looked the better team but after a goal mouth scramble Sars struck for a goal negating our early lead. We responded well and the ever dangerous Daniel Garde goaled twice to put us back in front. Shortly before half time Sars were awarded a dubious free from which they crashed the ball to the back of the our net despite the best efforts of our excellent keeper Odhran Rabbitte. The half time whistle sounded with Midleton 2.03 v Sars 2.00. Within minutes of the restart they again found the back of net to wipe out our lead, they followed this with a pointed free but our lads responded with a point from play from Daniel Garde. The game was now being played at a ferocious tempo Darragh Egan at centre forward was having an excellent outing. After some intense pressure we were awarded a 65, James McSweeney’s strike looked to be heading over the bar but at the last second dropped into the back of their net to give us back the lead, both set of supporters were on tender hooks as the game ebbed and flowed. Sars were awarded another close in free from which the goaled. Another Sars point followed and after another goal mouth scramble they again found the net to leave us trailing by four points. We weren’t done yet, after some strong play we were awarded a close in free but after some physical exchanges between both sets of players on the goal line the referee decided to overturn the free and throw in the ball much to out amazement, this was a hammer blow but we refused to wilt and after some strong play that man Daniel Garde again managed to wriggle free of his marker and cracked the ball to the back of the net. The final minutes were ticking by with a point separating the teams but Sars managed another point from a free , we surged forward in search of another score but the clock was against us and despite some late chances the final whistle saw us go down an a score line of Midleton 4.04 v Sars 5.03.
Our lads were devastated but gracious in defeat, goals win games and despite playing fantastic hurling we found ourselves on the wrong side of the result. This panel of players have done really well to reach a final and we are extremely proud of each and every one, all 25 players contributed to us reaching the final. We’ll be back sharper and stronger next year.
Panel : Ben Fitzpatrick, Callum Deegan, Callum Mc Sweeney Callum O Brien Daniel Garde, Daniel Shine, Darragh Egan, Eoghan Fraser , Fionn Kelly, Gearoid Cashman, Jack Foley, Jack O Connell , James Mc Sweeney, John Paul Mc Manus, Mathew Gregory, Odhran Dennigan, Paddy Walsh, Sean McSharry, Shane McNamara , Yohanis Mehigan, Odhran Rabbitte, Jake Kirby, Senan Gleeson & Josh Carey.

Premier 2 Football Semi Final
On Friday evening we were on the road again this time to Mallow to play the locals in the P2 Football semi final. We had done really well to reach this stage of the competition and were determined to give a good account of ourselves against what we knew to be a very strong Mallow outfit. We began brightly and an early Tomas Dunlea goal gave us a great start. Mallow then piled on the pressure and had two points from play followed by a pointed free which saw them draw level, but we battled on, a speculative shot from the excellent Cathraigh Cronin found the back of the net to put us back in the lead . Mallow responded strongly with two more points one from play one from free before Sean Mc Sharry landed a massive pointed free from distance to leave us leading by two points at the half time break. We faced into the breeze for the second half, Mallow kicked an early point from play, Cathraigh responded for us with another well taken point. After some intense pressure Mallow goaled this was followed quickly by another goal which saw us fall behind and all of a sudden we were chasing the game. After some spectacular saves from our goal keeper Conor Morley he could do nothing about gaol number 3. They quickly added a point but credit to out lads they never dropped their heads and Daniel Garde pointed, followed by a pointed free from Sean Mc Sharry, at this stage we had two goal bound shots cleared off the Mallow line. Cathraigh Cronin added another point, Mallow responded with a point from a 45 after Connor Morley had made another outstanding save to deny Mallow a goal. Marcas Lambe who played really well throughout got on the end of a good team move to add another point from play. The final whistle sounded shortly thereafter with a final score line of Mallow 3.09 v Midleton 2.06. Paddy Walsh and Matthew Gregory had great games in defence, Thomas Dunlea and Cathraigh Cronin tried hard at mid field, Darragh Egan, Eoghan Fraser and Sean Mc Sharry also had fine outing. Once again the lads can be very proud of their battling performances and in reaching the semi final stage of this competition. This brings our league competitions to an end for this year. Thanks to the parents who travelled in numbers to support the lads their support is greatly appreciated.
Panel: Adam O Connor, Ben Fitzpatrick, Callum O Brien Carthaigh Cronin , Daniel Garde, , Darragh Egan, Eoghan Fraser , Fionn Kelly, Gearoid Cashman, Jack Foley, James Mc Sweeney, John Paul Mc Manus, Luca Brodkorb, Mathew Gregory, Odhran Dennigan, Paddy Walsh, Peter Barrett, Sean McSharry, , Thomas Dunlea, Conor Morley & Marcas Lambe.

We would like to congratulate team mate Peter Barrett on being selected to represent Ireland in the upcoming World Junior Racquetball Championship in Mexico and wish him and his team the best of luck in the competition. The Barrett family would like to thank all those who supported the coffee morning held in the club last Saturday to raise funds for the team and to Midleton GAA for the use of the club house. It was a fantastic response from the GAA community; the family were overwhelmed by the support.

Fe 13
On Saturday afternoon in what proved to be perfect weather conditions for hurling the we had a home final against great rivals Douglas. This was a cracking game from start to finish, all through the years when these teams met Douglas always seemed to get the upper hand, was this going to be our day?  Our lads got off to a fine start a swift point from Tiernan O Connell followed up by two excellent frees from Darragh Fitzgerald. Douglas responded with three points of their own. Oscar Brennan worked a super score to give us a four points to three lead at halftime. Zach Smith kept our lads in the game with two outstanding saves before halftime. Adam Collins, Darragh Higgins, Conor Williams and Sean Cronin had their work cut out for them with the nippy Douglas forwards but as the game went on they seemed to be getting the upper hand.
The second half was as tight as the first but tireless work from Rory Lester, Tadhg Bohane and work horse Eoin Higgins kept the pressure on Douglas. Two quick scores from Higgins and FitzGerald seemed to settle us. They replied with two of their own, but then up stepped Tiernan O Connell to score a sublime point from the sideline which seemed to spark the magpies forwards into life. Next up was Alex Howard who rounded two Douglas backs and struck the back of the net with a fantastic goal. This goal really lifted the team Evan Mc Grath ran himself into the ground to keep the Douglas danger men at bay. Cormac Ryan, Darragh Aherne, and Larry Ward were also playing great hurling. When Darragh FitzGerald was accurate with the last free of the game it brought serious relief to the mentors on the sideline. The scenes of celebration when the ref blew the final whistle was a joy to behold. This was everything to our lads from number 1 up to 21, this was the day boys became men. Final score Midleton 1-08 v Douglas 0-07. The mentors were extremely happy with the huge turnout and support for our lads on the day and when the lads were clapped off the pitch you could see the sense of satisfaction on their faces. Thanks to all who supported on the day.
