Senior Hurling
We had a great win over Glen Rovers in Round 3 of the Championship last Saturday in Pairc Ui Chaoimh by 1-18 to 0-20. An early goal and some brilliant points from Conor Lehane set the tone for the first half and after Tommy Wallace saved a penalty we led at the break by
1-10 to 0-11. Mid way through the second half we led by four points but a number of frees from Patrick Horgan brought them right back into the game. With time almost up it was looking like going to a replay but enter Sean O’Leary Hayes who powered out of the half backline and struck a monster point off his left hand to seal victory for us.

On Saturday morning we travelled to Castlemartyr to play challenge games against Kiltha Og and Youghal. This was our third week in a row playing matches, we had 38 young magpies togged out and they all played four matches over the hour. All matches were competitive and very enjoyable as this group of players continue their progression. We will be putting the hurleys a side for a few weeks now as we prepare for our upcoming football blitz in Pairc Ui Chaoimh at the end of September.

Our day started at 9am as we boarded the bus and headed Waterford City to take part in the annual Roanmore blitz. After a pleasant and quiet hour and twenty minute  journey we arrived at De La Salle GAA grounds were all our games were played.
Midleton 1 were first in action against Ballyduff Lower, De La Salle and St Mary’s. Three very competitive games over the course of an hour saw our lads play with great skill and team work. Midleton 2 then took the pitch and played St Martins, De La Salle and Tramore. These games were very fast paced and hard fought. After a highly entertaining hour of play the lads gladly sat down to a well-deserved rest. Finally Midleton 3 got their chance to play. Over the hour they faced Raparees, De La Salle and St Mollerans. The high standard of hurling that was evident earlier in the day was on display again as our lads worked extremely hard in all their games. All our players were delighted to pick up their medals afterwards, exhausted and happy we headed for home.
Over the course of the day we played 9 games, winning 8 and drawing 1.

We headed off on Saturday morning with a 30 strong panel for the annual Roanmore Blitz in Waterford. The blitz is a great opportunity for our future stars to test their skills against teams from other counties. In all, we played nine matches on the day with everyone getting plenty of game time in different positions to demonstrate their skills. We were heartened by the effort and commitment that the lads showed throughout the games and well deserved their medals! They boys were extremely well behaved all day and we had a most enjoyable outing.

Last Sunday we welcomed Douglas to Clonmult Memorial Park for the latest round of the  football league. We had over 35 boys making up three different teams.  All games were very competitive at times with some lovely scores and teamwork on display, as well as some fantastic goalkeeping and resolute defending!  Well done to all involved and keep up the good work. Thanks also to our 3 young whistlers and to all supporters who came out to cheer on our young Magpies!

On Saturday morning we travelled to Bishopstown for Rebel Og football. We had two teams in action, on what turned out to be very good morning for football. Down numbers from previous weeks, the lads dug dip to try and grind out a result. We are competing with most teams who will be a grade above us in football next year. The fact that we are competing well with these teams shows we are making progress. The lads once again showed { after a few stern words again at halftime } great determination to go for the hour despite not getting the result. This bodes well for the future. We have no doubt that with a second night of training to commence early next year we will see a steady improvement. We are back to Hurling next week with an away fixture to Youghal and Fr O Neills . Well done again lads.

It was a busy week for us, first up we travelled to the Glen to complete the first round of the football league on Tuesday evening, Thursday saw us in Blackrock to meet the hosts in a hurling match that was postponed earlier in the year due to pitch closure, we were at home on Saturday v  Glen Rovers and on Sunday we back in the Glen  Field to meet the hosts for the third time in the week.
Midleton v St Nicholas P2 Football League
With some trepidation we set off for the Glen Field to play the hosts as Nicks had comprehensively defeated all the other teams in the group so far.  We began the match playing some excellent football but were a little wasteful in front of goal, Gearoid Cashman opened the scoring for us with a neat point form play despite some excellent goalkeeping Nicks struck for two goals before an Eoghan Fraser 45 settled us. Nicks added four more points to their first half tally to leave the half time score Nicks 2.04 Midleton 0.02, genuinely the scoreline flattered our hosts and didn’t reflect the amount of possession we had in the first half where Eoghan Fraser and Luca Brodkorb at mid field had played really well.  We began the second half brightly with a free for Eoghan Fraser we quickly added two more points from Cathraigh Cronin and James Mc Sweeney before James cut through the defence to crash a goal to the back of the net the tide had definitely turned in our favour another excellent point from Cathraigh was quickly followed by another James Mc Sweeney goal.  The frantic pace of the match continued with Nicks responding to the challenge by adding a free and a point from play, a fine point from Callum O’Brien levelled the match, against the run of play Nicks took the lead with seconds remaining however we launched one more attack which yielded an excellent point from Thomas Dunlea to leave the final score line St Nicks 2.08 v Midleton 2.08.

Midleton v Blackrock C3 Hurling League
We got off to a flying start with goals from Darragh Egan and Gearóid Cashman, this was followed by a fine point from play by Darragh Egan before Blackrock eventually scored a goal.  Darragh and Sean Mc Sharry found the target with fine points from play before Shane McNamara found the back of the net to complete the first half scoring to leave the Magpies with a 3-03 to 1-00 lead at the break.  The half time score didn't reflect the balance of play and the Rockies started the second half with renewed vigour and after sustained pressure they found the back of the net twice to leave the gap at 3 points. We were strong in defence at this stage with Sennan Gleeson, Yohanis Mehegan and John Paul McManus standing strong at the back clearing numerous attacks which eventually led to us scoring two more late points from Sean McSharry and Fionn Kelly. The final score was Midleton 3-05 v Blackrock 3-00 in an entertaining game that was in the balance right to the end.

Midleton v Glen Rovers P1 Hurling League
The sun shone brightly in Clonmult Park Midleton on Saturday as we took on Glen Rovers as a prequel to the senior match of the same day the early exchanges were evenly balanced with Cathraigh Cronin finishing off an excellent team score by slotting over a point from play.  A Tomas Dunlea free added to our tally before the glen had a point from play followed by a free.  A slick hand pass from Adam O Connor put James Mc Sweeney into space, he made no mistake adding another point. The Glen added two more points before Daniel Garde swung over a hard earned score from play. Paddy Walsh and Eoghan Fraser were having fine games in the Midleton defence and Thomas Dunlea Cathraigh Cronin were edging the mid filed battle.  Two more points from James Mc Sweeney and Luca Brodkorb completed our first half scoring the glen drew level to leave the half time score 6 points apiece.  We were a little disappointed as we felt our play wasn’t rewarded with scores. We got the first score of the second half from play from the stick of James Mc Sweeney,  the Glen added a point and shortly after this we conceded a goal from a long distance free putting the Glen ahead. We rallied again with pointed free from Thomas Dunlea during this spell we wasted a number of chances and were punished heavily when the Glen put over  two frees followed by another goal after some heroic Midleton defending. This knocked the stuffing out of us and the Glen added a late goal to complete their scoring, full time Midleton 0.08 Midleton 3.09.

Midleton V Glen Rovers C3 Hurling League
At the end of a very busy nine days we faced Glen Rovers for the third time, on this occasion it was the C3 hurling league. Up against a much bigger team we got off to a good start with a fine point from Sean Mc Sharry, this was followed by a Glen double. Shane McNamara then caught a great ball out of the air and split the posts with a great strike to level matters, a few minutes later Sean Mc Sherry picked up the ball in front of goal and dispatched an unstoppable shot to the back of the net to leave the magpies 3 points up heading towards half time, unfortunately just before half time a lapse in concentration at the back led to a soft Glen goal leaving the score level at 1-02 apiece at half time.  On the resumption the Glen opened the scoring  with a point and had Midleton under pressure, Sennan Gleeson, Yohanis Mehegan, Callum Mc Sweeney and John Paul McManus were having to work hard to keep the Glen attack at bay. One of their clearances via Callum O'Brien who had an outstanding game in midfield, reached Sean Mc Sharry who launched a great shot that looked like going over the bar but dipped at the last second for a goal. This was followed by a Glen point from a free which was quickly followed by a goal to leave the Glen leading by two heading into the final few minutes. The young magpies were working very hard at this stage and were awarded a free which was taken and was put between the posts by Jack Foley who along with Darragh Egan had solid games at half forward. Ben Fitzpatrick who had came on in midfield worked hard to win a ball in the middle and burst through and scored a great point to level matters. For the second time this week at the same venue an apparent foul on a Midleton player wasn't awarded the referee stopped play for the injury and the resultant free to the Glen after a short period of play resulted in what was to be the winning score from the Glen. This was a solid team performance we were unlucky to come out the wrong side of the result.

On Wednesday 29th August we played at home against Inniscara in the P2 Football Championship. The conditions were excellent, and it was an ideal evening for playing football. We hadn’t played much football during the summer, so it took a while for the lads to get their touch back. But once we settled we started to get into the game and we started to create chances. At half time we were very unlucky to be trailing by five points. In the second half our lads got into their stride but as hard they tired they could not catch our opponents. Going into the final few minutes we were within a goal but they finished out the game stronger to record the victory. Final score: Midleton 0:06 v Inniscarra 2:07
The players put in a great effort throughout and they can be proud of their effort on the night. Next up is a hurling challenge game against Youghal at home on Wednesday in preparation for our Challenge cup game against Na Piarsaigh on 12th September.
Panel: Mikey Finn, David Greene, Ben Kenneally, Fionn Dalton, Tiernan Roche, Michael Roe, Odhran Prenter, Brian O’Connell, Cathal Beausang, Dara Scanlon, Alex Moloney, Niall Lang, Tadhg Bohane, Tadgh O’Leary Hayes, Darragh Fitzgerald, Evan McGrath, Kamil Noack, David Noack & Rory Lester.
