Midleton Hurling & Football, Ladies Football & Camogie Club NEWS

26 August, 2018

Intermediate Hurling
Unfortunately we didn’t come out on the right side of the Championship replay against Ballincollig last Friday evening in Ovens. Even though we only trailed at the break by 0-10 to 0-07 we never exerted enough pressure on them in the second half. A well taken goal from Ross O’ Regan reduced the lead to four points late in the game but in the end they ran out deserving winners by 1-18 to 1-10.
Well done to all the players and management on their efforts throughout the year.
Team: Byran Rossiter, Billy O’Shea, Adam Daly, Eoin Moloney, Cillian Hurley, Shane Ryan, Padraig O’Keeffe, Shane Finn (0-01), Kieran Mulcahy, Garan Manley (0-06, 4 frees, 65), Jake Hegarty , Ian Kennefick (0-01), Ross O’Regan (1-01), Peter Dowling (0-01) & Tommy O’Connell. Subs used Kevin Finn, Cian Farmer, Cathal Gunning & Sean O’Farrell.

Senior Hurling
We play Glen Rovers in Round 3 of the Championship on Saturday next the 1st of September in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Best of luck to our players and management in this game.

Junior Hurling
Last Thursday evening we had a good away win in the League against our hosts Castlelyons on a scoreline of 3-13 to 1-07.
Team: Coran Swayne, Brendan Ferriter, Pat Stack, James O’Mahony, Gavin Bagnell Harnett, Henry Foster, John Keane, Lochlinn Mc Carthy, Sean O’Farrell, Johnny Comer, Micheal Keohane, Josh Deady, Fergus Wade, Joe Loftus  & Jake Shanahan.
Subs Patrick Dunlea, Paul Barry, Shane Goulding, Jerome Curtin & Andrew Rea.
We have been fixed to play Carrigtwohill in the B Championship on Tuesday the 4th.

Junior Football
Although we have yet to play the East Cork Junior A Football final v Fr O Neills both teams will go forward in the County. The draws were made last Friday with the E Cork “winners” to play the Beara “runners up” Urhan and the E Cork “runners up” to play the Carbery “winners” St James/Kilmacabea/Tadgh MacCarthaigh. These games are down for the weekend of the 14/15/16th of September.

Field Fixture
Last Saturday evening we hosted the East Cork Junior A Hurling quarter final between St Ita’s and Carraig na bhFear where a Seamus Harnedy led St Ita’s came out on top by 1-16 to 1-13. Many thanks to all our members who helped out on the day.

Fe 21 All Ireland Hurling Final
Commiserations to the Cork players and management who lost out in the dying minutes of the All Ireland final on Sunday last at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick against Tipperary 1-16 to 3-13 by conceding a late goal and a point having led by a point in the 62nd minute.
Hard luck to our own Seanaidh Smyth and Sean O’Leary Hayes both whom were part of the extended panel.

Cork Football Submissions
At the last County Board meeting, Chairperson Tracy Kennedy asked for submissions in relation to Cork football, which will be considered by the new committee put in place to develop a long-term plan for football in this county. While submissions from individuals are welcome, and have been received a number of these, she is particularly interested in the views of clubs (including your players) and is extending the deadline for submissions, which can be sent to by email to chairperson.cork@gaa.ie to Thursday next, August 30th.
The committee will meet to begin its work the following week.

Camogie (Camógaíochta)
U9:  We travelled to Whitechurch on Saturday morning to participate in a Blitz organised by Rockban. We played Inniscarra, Rockban & Blackrock in what were very competitive and enjoyable games.  There were great skills on display from our girls. They are a great   bunch of girls and are getting better every week!  Thanks to Rockban for hosting us.
U10: We hosted Inniscarra in Ballinacurra on Saturday in what was a fantastic game of camogie.  With two evenly matched teams it was both a competitive and entertaining game with some excellent performances from both sides. Well done to all the girls involved. Thanks to Inniscarra for travelling.

U12 Whites:  We played Douglas in the league on Wednesday evening last, it was a great performance from the girls, with some great skills on display we battled all the way through with Douglas just edging us on the night . Thanks to everyone who travelled on the night and thanks to Douglas for hosting. On Saturday we were on the road again this time to Cloughduv to take on the hosts, in a very competitive match the girls put in a huge effort challenging every ball. Well done to Clughduv who came out on top on the night. Thanks again to the families for travelling and to Cloughduv for hosting.
U16: We began our u16 championship campaign last Monday evening in Ballinacurra against Rockban.  In what turned out to be a great evening's camogie both teams got some fantastic early scores but we took charge of the game with some great defensive displays particularly Orla Evans and Hannah Wall combined with great work from Abbie Foley and Vivienne Gleeson in midfield. Unfortunately as the second half wore on Rockban grew more into the game and reduced our lead we found it difficult to get scores.  Inevitably as extra time loomed Rockban got the winning point to lead at the only time in the game but the most crucial.  Final score Rockban 3 - 8 Midleton 3 - 7. This was a great performance from this young Midleton team and thankfully we have another game in this competition where the experience of losing our last two games by the narrowest of margins will stand to us. Panel: Jill Connaughton, Mischa Daly, Orla Evans, Ellen Ryan (capt), Caoimhe Cronin, Jodie Keegan O' Connell, Hannah Wall, Vivienne Gleason, Abbie Foley, Eabha Collins, Leah Hogan, Clara McCarthy, Teresa Geary, Chloe Garde, Grace O' Leary, Ellie Collins, Rachel Mc Sweeney, Emily Lambe, Aoife Fitzgerald & Emma Domney.

Ladies Football (Peil na mBan)
Our girls travelled to Mayfield for East Cork Minor League game against the home side last Tuesday in perfect conditions for football. We had only 11 girls available to us on the night due to girls being away, others had already committed to camogie games and two more on match bans with Cork U16A. Young Rachel Quirke who came along to support the team, gamely offered her services and made it 12, and took up a position inside corner forward. Mayfield who had 15 matched our 12 and used rolling subs throughout the game. This was one of the most enjoyable games we played this year with both teams full of running. With a few younger girls on the team playing up in the minor grade for their first time it took us a while to settle resulting in Mayfield roaring into a 2 goal lead, but after 10 mins or so our girls settled and started to play some excellent football and started to get on top of the Mayfield girls. So much so that we went in at half time leading by 3:10 to 2:3 and well in control. The highlight of the first half was the support play and ability to retain position. The younger girls played as if they were seasoned campaigners at this grade and all made a huge contribution. At half time we could not find fault in any one players performance, we dominated all positions, even Rachel who ran in for two excellent taken points. This was a game where all the forwards scored, you can’t really ask for more. Our backs were steadfast and solid throughout. The second half was a tighter affair but very open and full of running with the girls from both teams covering the length and breath of the pitch. With 10 mins to go Mayfield had pulled us back to four points 3:6 to 3:10 but we regained our composure on the ball and finished up on a score line of Midleton 3-15 to Mayfield's 3-6. It was an excellent team performance with great spirit and camaraderie, very well done girls.
Team: Rayanna Power, Claudia Kearney, Deirdre Corcoran, Roisin O'Callaghan, Abby Quirke (1-3), Vivienne Gleeson (0-1), Denise Collins, Molly Beausang (1-6), Aoife Franklin (0-2), Rhea Buckley, Katie Horgan (1-1) & Rachel Quirke (0-2).
Next up is St Colmans in Shanagarry on Thursday 30th Aug.

We had our second game in two weeks when we travelled to Togher on Saturday morning to take on the Barrs. 35 young Magpies made the trip and each got three games over the hour. There were great skills, effort and some really fine scores from our lads throughout all the games. As always we had great support from parents which is appreciated.

After the summer break our boys made the trip to Ovens last weekend for the latest Rebel Óg football match against Eire Óg. Despite the numbers bring down due to the summer holidays, we still had 23 boys making up two teams. Both games were very competitive with some lovely scores and teamwork on display. Then on Saturday last the Fé10 boys were on the road again with a trip to Ballincollig as we welcomed the return of the Rebel Óg hurling league. We had 25 boys proudly wearing the black and white making up two hurling teams. Again, the lads showed fantastic enthusiasm and skill in both matches. Well done to all involved and keep up the hurling practice at home. Thanks again to all the parents who were able to come along and support.

After accepting an invitation from Courcey Rovers to take part in the Johnny Murray Shield competition we set off on Saturday morning last for Ballinspittle. It was a four team competition with the hosts, Bishopstown Aghada and Midleton run on a league system.  In warm sunshine we faced Bishopstown in our first match, earlier in the year we had been beaten by them in the league so the lads were very determined to do themselves justice this time around. We started at a frantic pace maintaining the pressure on our opponents until the half time whistle where we led on a score of three points to one.  Our second half performance was very impressive with excellent team work and work ethic combined with no little skill and saw us run out deserved winners on a score line of 2.11 to 0.03.   After a short break we faced the hosts, a disastrous start to this game saw us trail 1.04 to no score after only eight minutes of an only 15 min half, this was a real test of character and belief inch by inch our lads battled their way back into the game and incredibly we managed to get on level terms half time 2.04 apiece. With renewed confidence we took to the field for the second half in a game of extremely high quality hurling the lads showed their full array of skills hooking blocking tackling and sheer grit to win out on a score line of 4.07 to 2.07.  It was all to play for in the last match as we faced our East Cork neighbours Aghada.   This was a very intense encounter with us in control in most sectors in the first half but the lads efforts were not reflected on the score board, we missed some scoring opportunities but fatigue was now a factor, it was a one point lead for us at half time with a score of 1.02 to 0.04. The final 15 mins was keenly contested with both sides giving their all. Aghada took the lead for the first time in the match with seven minutes to go but the magpies dug deep and got their noses in front as the final minutes ticked by.  At the final whistle we came out on top with a score line of Midleton 2.05 v Aghada 1.05. After joyous scenes we headed off to accept the Johnny Murray Shield it was great to see the elation on the faces of these young players after putting a titanic effort throughout the day this was just reward for their efforts.  After hurling for over 90 mins incredibly all our scores a total of 8 goals and 23 points came from play.
A big thanks to all the supporters who gave great encouragement throughout the competition. Thanks to Courcey Rovers for the invitation and hospitality.  Untimely this was a day for players coming of age … Magpies Abu.
Panel: Ben Fitzpatrick, Conor Williams, Daniel Garde, Thomas Dunlea, Callum Mc Sweeney, Carthaigh Cronin, Darragh Egan, Eoghan Fraser, Fionn Kelly, Adam O Connor,  Jack Foley, James Mc Sweeney, John Paul Mc Manus, Luca Brodkorb, Odhran Dennigan,  Paddy Walsh, Peter Barrett, Yohanis Mehigan, Odhran Rabbitte & Conor Morley.
This week our league matches resume we play St Nicks in Football on Tuesday evening and Blackrock in hurling on Thursday.

On Wednesday evening the magpies travelled to Kinsale for a must win game of football to keep our campaign going to qualify for a semi final spot. It was an ideal evening for a game of ball with virtually no wind. We got off to a flyer of a start with the ball in the back of the net just after throw in. Our midfielders worked very well together and kept the supply of ball into the forward line constant. The halftime score was Midleton 4-3 to Kinsale 0-1. They came out fighting in the second half and got the first four scores putting the backs under serious pressure. However a goal for the Magpies seemed to get things back on track and we finished out the game very well with the final score line was 5-7 to 1-6. The mentors would like to thank the lads for putting in a super performance on the night and also would like to thank all the parents for traveling on the night. Panel as follows Tiernan O’ Connell, Zach Smith, Darragh Aherne, Darragh Scanlon, Eoin Higgins, Adam Collins, Alex Moloney, Tadgh Bohane, Oscar Brennan, Rory Lester, Sean Cronin, Darragh Fitzgerald, Cian Lambe, Evan Mc Grath, Tadhg O’ Leary Hayes, Niall Lang, Alex Howard & Thomas O’ Connor.
