Camogie in Midleton (Article by John Fenton)
According to an account in ‘the History of the GAA in Midleton 1884-1986’ (written by Tony O’Donoghue and the late Milo Corr) ‘camogie in Midleton was intermittent over the years’. Photographs of the Midleton teams from the 1920’s and 30’s are attached (1930’s courtesy of Vincent O’Neill). One photo is that of a game between Midleton and St. Itas from Rathcormac in the 1930’s and the game was played in Carrigtohill. For the record Midleton won by eight goals to no score for St. Itas. Among the names of the team in the photo, which are written on the back of the photo, in no particular order are Myra Walsh, Madge Gleeson, Mary Ellen Kenneally, Rita Houlihan?, Betsy Twomey, Norrie Lee, Bina Cashman, Josie Sullivan, Mary Barrett, Esther Twohig, Patsy Kenneally, Mary Carey/Casey?.  Other prominent players not listed on the back of the photo which may also have been present when the photo was taken, include Kitty Kennedy, Mary Martin, Lily Hennessy, Hannah Twohig, Mary Horgan, Rita Coleman, Peggy Powell. Betsy Twomey from the above list had the honour of winning an All Ireland camogie medal. Another prominent Midleton camogie player was Mrs. Elizabeth Heaphy (featured in the 1920’s photograph), formerly Lizzie Stokes who won two county medals in 1914 and 1918 with Clann Emer a city based team. Mrs. Heaphy was grandmother to Lynda Quirke and great grandmother to Darren and Amy Quirke. Midleton camogie club ‘functioned for several years and made their presence felt on the Camogie scene’ before disbanding. The next serious attempt at forming a camogie team in the area came in the 1960’s when Churchtown North camogie club was formed. The team generally consisted of players from the Midleton/Ballintotis/Churchtown North areas and made an immediate impression on the county camogie scene. They won county Junior and Intermediate championships in the years following their formation and a number of Churchtown players went on to play senior with Imokilly and Cork teams. The Churchtown North camogie club disbanded in the late 1980’s. If anyone has further information on the Midleton team members in the photo or similar photos on camogie in Midleton around that time we would be delighted to hear from you.

Tony Keady (Galway) Book – a Father’s Day gift?
My name is Shannon Keady, and I am writing to ask you a big favour. My Dad is Tony Keady, and he passed away suddenly at the end of last summer. But myself and my Mam, and my three brothers, have published a book telling his story. It is written by Liam Hayes, the former Meath footballer and journalist. The book is called ‘One Hundred and Ten Per Cent Legend’ because my Dad would always tell us to give 110% any time myself and my three brothers were playing camogie or hurling, or if we were doing our exams in school.
My Dad’s book was published last month and it is now in bookshops all over the country. We are so proud of it. It means the world to us. My Mam and I were on the Late Late Show a few weeks ago talking about it and she said that the book kept us all going through our first winter without my Dad. That is true. It did.
Now as a family, we want to give 110% for my Dad’s book. He would have wanted it to be the No.1 book in the country, and we want to make it the No.1 book in the country.
At the moment it is No.1 in Galway, and in the Top 20 in Ireland. Can you help me and my brothers make it No.1? I am asking everyone in the GAA for their help.
Father’s Day is on June 17th and we think it would be a great present for every father in the GAA. It would be the best thing ever if ‘One Hundred and Ten Per Cent Legend’ was No.1 before my Dad’s first anniversary in August. Yours sincerely, Shannon Keady.

On Monday evening last we welcomed Ballincollig to Clonmult Park for the C3 hurling league. It was a lively affair but we were in control for most of the match and began the scoring with a neat point from play from the impressive Darragh Egan.   Another flurry of scores saw James Mc Sweeney, Shane McNamara, and Jack Foley all pointing before Gearoid Cashman kicked the ball into the back of the net to put us in a very strong position at half time.  The second half saw Ballincollig up their performance but try as they might their accuracy in front of the posts was just off the mark.  We dominated in many areas of the pitch with fine performances form goal keeper Odhran Rabbitte, Fionn Kelly, Sennan Gleeson, Eoghan Fraser, Yohannis Mehigan.  We added two more points from a Jack Foley free and Darragh Egan from play. Ballincollig finally got on the score sheet with a pointed free. The game ended on a score line of Midleton 1.08 to Ballincollig 0.01. Well done to all the lads.

Thursday we made the trip to Inniscarra to in another C3 match against the locals, once again we began the match in a very determined fashion with keeper Odhran Rabbitte making an excellent save to deny Inniscarra a certain goal,  we opened the scoring with two points from James McSweeney one a 65 the second from play.  Inniscarra were providing a sterner test for us in what was a physical and robust encounter with both teams contesting every ball manfully, a very common sense approach from the referee saw the game flow.  A fine point from play from Ben Fitzpatrick was followed by a goal from Callum Deegan and another point from play by James Mc Sweeney.  Inniscarra were awarded a penalty in the closing minutes of the first half but Odhran not only stopped a bullet of a shot but managed to control the sliotar and clear his line.  The first half ended on a scoreline of Midleton 1.04 to Inniscarra 0.00.  The second half was a more even affair,  Paddy Walsh, Ben Fitzpatrick and Sennan Gleeson were excellent in defence, Yohanis Mehign captain on the night was excellent throughout in mid field.  Inniscarra pointed a 65 which was cancelled out by point from the 65 line for James.  Final score Midleton1.05 to Inniscarra 0.01.
Thanks again to all the parents for travelling and for their continued support for the lads.

On Saturday last the Magpies travelled to Lismore for the Paddy Moore tournament in what proved to be a very enjoyable day out for all. There was four teams involved De La Salle, Lismore both Waterford and Dicksboro from Kilkenny.
First up for us were the Kilkenny team Dicksboro, we came out of the blocks really fast and had a commanding lead at half time 7-2 to 0-2. There was no let up in the second half with the final score 11-2 to 0-4 a fine win for the magpies. The second game was a much tighter contest with the home side who were well up for it that resulted in a loss for the magpies 1-05 to 0-02. This left us needing to win our final game against De La Salle, again our lads got off to a mighty start with a halftime score showing 2-04 to no score. We finished up winning on a score line of 2-10 to 0-02 which guaranteed us a spot in the final against Lismore. This was an extremely intense game with the home side leading well at halftime 4-02 to 0-03. However our lads turned it around in the second half and brought the game to just one score between the two teams with five minutes to go but Lismore just had the legs on our lads in the end the final score was 5-07 to 3-06. This was a fantastic tournament very well organised and we will look forward to many battles with our Waterford rivals in the years ahead. The mentors would like to thank all parents and families who traveled to support them on the day.
Panel: Thomas O’ Connor, Sean Cronin, Thomas Dunlea, Carthaigh Cronin, James Mc Sweeney, Rory Lester, Zach Smith, Conor Williams, Eoin Higgins, Darragh Aherne, Darragh Higgins, Adam Collins, Tadhg Bohane , Cian Lambe, Tadgh O’ Leary Hayes, Niall Lang, Alex Moloney, Darragh Scanlon, Tiernan O Connell, Evan Mc Grath, Darragh Fitzgerald  & Alex Howard.

Last Sunday week we set out early in the morning to Clonmel for a challenge game with Moyle Rovers. With the home team only having 13 players we mixed things up a little so that both teams had the full compliment. Overall our first touch and striking was excellent and took some great scores to run out comfortable winners in the end. We hit the road straight after to Thurles to take in both the minor and senior Cork games. At the moment it looks like our 2nd round championship game with Ibane Gaels will take place at the end of June, more on this in the next week.

Exams
We wish all our juvenile students sitting their year end exams and in particular our players sitting their junior certificate on Wednesday every success. We are sure both players and their parents will be delighted to have them finally start.  We look forward, as I’m sure do they of having the exams over and all our players back in action for training, league matches and championship.  Good luck lads!

Davy Hogan Street Leagues
On Wednesday night last at 7pm the first round of matches took place at Midleton GAA Club.  It was the perfect evening for hurling and there was a great sense of excitement amongst our 88 players waiting for the tournament to start.  Great credit needs to go to our two co-ordinators, Ed Coughlan team mentor with our Fe11’s and Tom Casey team mentor with our Fe10’s who ensured all ran smoothly on the night.  Our 88 players were divided into 6 teams and assigned coaches from both the Fe10 and Fe11’s, 3 pitches were suitably set up and we had 3 young whistler referees on the night to referee 2 matches each.  Thanks to Ryan Cahill, Dan Cagney and Charlie Walsh for doing a great job on the night.  There was tremendous skill on show and plenty of spectators to enjoy it. The first night of tournaments, as has been shown in the past, can very quickly change in subsequent rounds, so all teams are very much still in the running as we enter into Round 2 on the 11th of June.  Please note there is an earlier start time on June 11th.  A text will be issued by team managers closer to the time.  Position after Round 1; 4 Points St Enda, 4 Points Garryowen, 3 Points Saints, 1 Point Forkums, 0 Points Sons of rest.
Please come out and support these young magpies on the 11th of June at the GAA Club.

Juvenile Golf Classic
Our Juvenile Golf Classic is set to take place on Wednesday the 11th of July and Thursday the 12th of July.   The Golf Classic is vitally important in terms of raising funds to run our club.  Juvenile coaches will be contacting parents to see if you would be in a position to help support this event.  We would be very grateful for anyone who could assist us in terms of tee box sponsorship.

Family Quiz Night
On June 24th at Midleton GAA Club we are running a family quiz night from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.  The cost of a ticket for a family of 4 is €20.00.  We are asking all families across all the Clubs to come out and support this event.  We are hosting a visiting Fe14 New York
selection team at the club on the 7th of July.  As this is an unforeseen expense in the annual running of the Juvenile Club this family quiz night is in aid of supporting the cost of the teams.  Further details of the tournament are outlined below.  We hope to see at the Club on the 24th.

Save the date July 7th - New York Visiting Team
The Juvenile Committee was contacted a number of weeks ago by a New York GAA Club, St Brendan’s in Orange County New York.  New York GAA were looking to arrange a visit to Ireland in July for a combined Fe14 New York Selection team and wanted to arrange a visit to Midleton GAA Club as part of their tour.  There are 25 players, 6 coaches and a number of supporting family members in the travelling party.  We last hosted a visiting New York Team in 2011 and it is often spoken about and fondly remembered by all involved with that visit.  We look forward with great anticipation to creating new memories and providing a great day’s tournament of hurling for all our members to come and enjoy.  The tournament line up will see Midleton, New York, Abbeyside from Waterford and Knockavilla Kichams from Tipperary compete to win the Cup and Shield.  What makes this tournament extra special for our club is that the Cup and Shield for this tournament will be engraved in Paddy Dunlea’s name.  Paddy was a lifelong passionate member of our club where he carried out numerous roles over the years.  This is a fitting tribute to him and his dedication to our club.  This
tournament together with the Cup and Shield will become an annual Fe15’s tournament within our Juvenile Calendar in honour of Paddy Dunlea.  It is not every day, or indeed every year that we host a visiting New York Team.  It will be a very special day for our Club and we
encourage all our members across all our clubs to save the date of July 7th and come to the club to view the tournament and enjoy what we know will be a wonderful social afternoon with many competitive hurling matches on show.  The tournament will run from 1.30 to 6.30.

Summer Cul Camps
Our first Cul Camp of the Summer is set to commence on Monday the 2nd of July and run until Friday the 6th of July (5 days).
