Midleton Hurling & Football, Camogie & Ladies Football Club News

26 March, 2017

Junior Football
Last Saturday evening we went down to St Catherine’s by 1-08 to 3-04 in Copperalley, Youghal in the first round of the East Cork Junior A Football Championship.
They started very well and raced into a lead at halftime by 0-03 to 0-00. We begin very brightly in the second half and in a matter of minutes came within a point of them only for a counter attack which yielded them a goal. Again we fought back with a number of well worked points but once again they worked a counter attack very well and scored two goals in a matter of minutes. A late goal wasn’t enough for us and they ran our deserving winners by 3-04 to 1-08. Referee Jim Daly (Youghal)

In 1967 our Junior Footballers defeated old rivals Glanmire in the East Cork semi final and later Glenbower Rovers in very close final by 1-05 to 0-05. In the County quarter final we defeated Kilshannig, then Castletownbere in the semi final after a reply. The final against Newcestown was not played until the 10th of March 1968 due to an outbreak of the Foot & Mouth Disease when we lost heavily. A major contributing factor to this defeat was the unavailability of several key players.

U12 Girls Football East Cork League - Midleton 3-07 v Aghada 1-04
Near perfect conditions greeted us in Rostellan last Saturday 25th March where our Fe 12 girls played the first round of their U12 football league. This panel is still a work in progress and hopefully the number of players will get boosted as we progress through the year. If there are any U12 girls out there that are interested in football then we would be delighted if you would come join us. The standard of football from the start of this game was very high. The first 10 minutes of the game was very even with both teams owning periods of dominance. But we eventually made a breakthrough with Katie Smyth and Kelly Quirke registering our first two scores; Both girls converted their chances with aplomb. This gave us the platform to add some more scores before half time. Amy Murray, Selena Hernandez O’Riordan, Isobel Nestor and Grainne Finn all made significant contributions at times during the first half.
Half Time Score: Midleton: 2-3 v Aghada 0-03.
The second half was equally as enjoyable as the first had been. Saoirse Ni’Theangana, Ellen O’Neill, Ashling McCarthy (who added some great scores), Lily Kelly & Shelia O’Leary Hayes displayed some superb football skills during the second half.
At the full time whistle we were ahead on a score line of 3-07 to Aghada’s 1-04.
Our next game is a home game V Mayfield on April 8th.
Panel: Amy Murray, Ellen O’Neill, Katie Smith, Ashling McCarthy, Isobel Nestor, Kelly Quirke, Grainne Finn, Selena Hernandez O’Riordan, Lily Kelly, Sheila O’Leary Hayes & Saoirse Ni’Theangana.

Junior League Midleton v Watergrasshill
Our Junior Girls welcomed Watergrasshill Juniors for Round 4 of the Cork Junior League to Midleton today on Sunday 19th March. Still reeling from our drumming against Douglas the previous week we set out to prove to ourselves that we could compete in this competition. We conceded seven goals the previous week and our target for this game that we keep the ball out of our net. The work rate and commitment was fantastic. Our backline put up the shutters and hunted and harried their forwards. Our link up play improved and we started to play great football. They just couldn’t get near our goal and had to settle for points and at that we kept them limited. At the break we held a lead of 1 point 1:3 to 5 points. Our goal coming from a fantastic period of dominant play where Molly Beausang rattled the roof of the net after receiving a great pass following great link up play started from our full back line. The second half started in the same vain as the first half ended and both teams moving the ball well through the paces. They equalised straight away after half time and incredibly there was no score again until the last 10 minutes where they eventually broke us down and got in for two  fine points. For the last eight minutes our girls threw everything at them in trying to grab a late winner. Tired legs took their toll and they just managed to hang on to claim the spoils. Final Score Midleton 1:3 v WGH 0:8
But over all very happy with the performance and we have learned a lot about ourselves from this game, especially that we can compete in this competition.
Scorers: Molly Beausang 1-0, Orlagh Farmer 0-2, Abby Quirke 0-1
Panel: Kate Mary Cullinane, Roisin O'Callaghan, Deirdre Kenny, Caoimhe Morrison, Claire O'Brien, Olivia Walsh, Amy Quirke, Orlagh Farmer, Abby Quirke, Molly Beausang, Niamh O'Farrell, Kari McEvoy, Rhea Buckley, Ciara O'Doherty, Deirdre Corcoran, Ruth Goulding, Laura O'Leary, Aoife Franklin, Sadhbh Beausang, Lucy Wallace & Ali Smith.

Fe 9
Our first hurling match of the year was an away trip to Kinsale GAA. At a sun-drenched Jack Barrett Memorial Park Park, 30 eager Magpies took to the field for an 11.15am throw in the latest round of the Rebel Og Fe9 league. Cheered on by a huge travelling support and encouraged by their 10 enthusiastic coaches, all of the lads performed brilliantly, showing outstanding skill & determination. Well done to all involved & thanks to all who came along. Thanks also to Kinsale GAA for a well organised morning, and to their 3 young referees, who oversaw proceedings admirably.

Fe 10
On a beautiful Saturday morning in Clonmel Memorial Park our U10 Hurling league got under way with a home fixture Vs Sars. It was a perfect morning for our first hurling match of the year with 40 young Magpies ready for action. Even though it was our first hurling match some of the skills and score's were a sight to hold. I'm sure as the year goes on with training and matches the boys will progress even more. I would like to thank Sars who played there part in a very highly entertaining morning. Also I would like to thank our young whistlers Sam Quirke and Cian Crowley for doing an excellent job on their refereeing debuts !!!!!

Fe 11
It was a busy week, we travelled to Rostellan on Wednesday evening for a hurling challenge against the locals. In very poor weather conditions both of our teams acquitted themselves very well coming out on top in both matches. On Saturday last we again faced the same opposition in a football League match on a perfect home pitch under blue skies the boys once again proved too strong for Aghada in two very competitive and hard fought matches.  Our league continues this week switching codes to Hurling v Sars away,  date and time to be confirmed.  Thanks to the young referees Charlie Walsh and Jack Fitzgerald who did an excellent job refereeing Saturday’s football match.

Fe 13
Midleton 6-10 v Cobh 3-02
Our lads travelled to play Cobh under lights last Friday evening and produced a wonderful display to win their third consecutive game in the Premier 2 Football League. Throughout the first half we enjoyed most of the possession, with Davy Cremin and Mikey Finn combining well to ensure our scores mounted up. At half time we lead by 2-3 to 1-1 with TJ Murphy dominating in the full back role and together with Riain de Barra, Odhran O’Mahony and Ben Kenneally, frustrated the Cobh forwards continuously. Michael Roe worked very hard for the team and covered every blade of grass at midfield, combining well with Fionn Dalton at wing back and Cathal Beausang at half forward.
Our forwards enjoyed the majority of possession once again for the second half with the two Daras, Scanlon and Fitzgerald, proving very tricky for their backline. Brian O’Connell at full forward was a constant threat throughout, and was ably assisted by David Green who won some great ball on his wing. As their forwards attempted a comeback, Odhran Prenter defended superbly, with Alex Howard proving very safe and sound in goals.
The introduction of Niall Lang, Alex Moloney, and Evan McGrath showed we have great strength on the bench, with Tadhg O’Leary Hayes also catching the eye with his scores from the right wing. All in all, our lads had a great win, and going forward with a certain Wicklow influence, we can be very positive about our football ability and opportunity to win the league.
Panel from: Alex Howard, Riain de Barra, Fionn Dalton, Ben Kenneally, Odhran Prenter, Tadhg O’Leary Hayes, Michael Roe, David Cremin, TJ Murphy, Cathal Beausang, Dara Fitzgerald, Odhran O’Mahony, Brian O’Connell, Dara Scanlon, David Green, Niall Lang, Mikey Finn, Evan McGrath, Alex Moloney and Tiarnán Roche (inj).

Fe 14
Best of luck to our Fe14 footballers who will participate in Division 1 Football Feile next weekend in Ballincollig. The games start on Saturday with the first throw-in timed for 11 am. It’s a big ask of this group of players to continue to play at this level but they continue to give it their best. Next week in Ballincollig we are drawn in the same league as Douglas, Ballincollig and Valley Rovers. This is a top division but our group of young Magpies are up for this challenge. We look forward to the competition and relish the prospect at taking on the best in the county at U14.

Fe 15
On Saturday afternoon last our Fe 15's took to the field for our third game in the Premier 2 Rebel Og Football League. Ibane Gaels started the stronger and took an early lead. We worked hard but we're up against a very strong footballing side which saw us finishing the first half well behind. The second half saw Ibane Gaels come out strong and despite some late scores the away side proved too strong.
Final score: Midleton 2-02 v Ibane Gaels 5-15.
Team: Alex Pranger, Trevor Shine, Charlie Walsh, Conor Hayes, William O Sullivan, Gavin Reddy, Daniel Cagney, Leo Hennessy, Patrik Kane, Conor Fitzgerald, Nickey Hayes, Paul Connaughton, Luke Deane, Darragh Crowley, Liam Kelly, Christopher Leahy, Dathi Magan and Ben Cummins.

Fe 16
As a warm up to our upcoming league opener against Glen Rovers, we welcomed
Ballincollig to Clonmult Memorial park for a challenge game. With a number of players away on Cork duty it was a great chance for squad players to get game time.
We started well against the strong wind and went ahead by a few points. There could have been a few goals as well for the home team if not for some fine saves by the Ballincollig net minder. The first half ended with us in a comfortable position.
Ballincollig were stronger in the second half but our lads battled well and kept a lead throughout the game.
Team : Mark Daly, Dan O'Sullivan, Charlie Walsh, Gavin Reddy, Ethan Daly, Leo Hennessy, Daithi Magan, Samuel Quirke, Patrick Kane, Paul Connaghton, Cian Crowley Conor Hayes, Rory Donegan, Adam Meade, Tim O'Sullivan, Conor Fitzgerald & Nicky Hayes.
