Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Club Development
The first meeting of our Five Focus Groups took place last Wednesday  where almost 60 people met to evaluate the information collected at the Open meeting. The Steering Committee chairman Mark Walsh welcomed everybody and thanked them for their input so far. A Power Point presentation detailed the agenda for the night, group Leaders were appointed and it was down to business for an hour or so. The second meeting of the groups will take place this coming Wednesday from 8 to 9.15pm.

Premier Minor Football
In our second outing of the year in the Rebel Og Premier 2 Football League our minor footballers were given a second half lesson in the finer arts of the big ball game by a very good Glenville team. The Magpies were very competitive in the opening half and and but for the concession of two very soft goals put in a satisfactory effort. The half time score had Glenville 3-04 to 1-03 ahead. The opening moments of the second half provided an insight of what was to come with Gleville adding to their account in the very first attack. While we maintained our effort throughout, Glenville had a lot of very good possession of which they used well and Midleton were chasing the ball for all of the half. The final score had Glenville 5-10 Midleton 1-04. Team: Liam Franklin, James O'Brien, Sean O'Meara, Luke Smith, Kevin Mulcahy, Seadhnaidh Smyth, Conor Evans, Jack Enright, Luke Finnerty, Cathal Gunning, Cormac Beausang, Padraig O'Brien, Mark Crotty, Conor O'Neill, Adam Daly. Subs used Ryan McConville, Eoin Mitchell, Shane O'Brien, Tom Scanlon, Kevin Daly.

Fe 21 Football
Recently we travelled to Waterford to play Ballinacourty in an U21 football challenge match. As it was a Monday night the match had to be played under floodlights; this gave it a great atmosphere. As it was our first outing of the year we were slow to start. After 10 minutes we were 4 points behind. But then things started to change. Our backs started to win possession and as a result of some great delivery to the forwards they started to pick off the scores. By half time we were well in the game. We dominated the first 20 minutes of the second half and again because of the fierce work rate by all players we notched some fine scores. Understandably tiredness started to impact in the last 10 minutes but at that stage we have given an excellent account of ourselves. On the night the mentors were delighted with the commitment given by the small band of players that travelled. Championship versus Glanmire is only a few weeks away. The mentors are trying to set up a couple of more games (it’s not proving to be an easy task) prior to the championship.

Fitzgibbon Cup Hurling
Hard luck to UCC players Killian Burke, Conor Lehane, Tommy Wallace, Brian Hartnett and Cormac Walsh who were knocked out of the competition when they could only draw with UL last Tuesday. Well done to the CIT lads Patrick White and Joe Loftus on their victory over UCD thus qualifying them for a quarter final place v NUIG next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Allianz National Hurling League
The opening Round Allianz Hurling League 2015 competition saw Cork take on All Ireland champions Kilkenny last Saturday night before a crowd of over 8,000 in Pairc Ui Rinn. Unfortunatley the game didn’t live up to expectations with Kilkenny dominant throughout despite only fielding 6 of last years Championship team. Cork will have to improve on this performance before the visit of Clare next Saturday night @ 7pm in Pairc Ui Rinn. Conor Lehane played at left half forward and scored 1-02 and Luke O’Farrell came on with ten miuntes to go and scored a great goal and was very unlucky not to hit the winner with the last effort of the game.

Our footballers had a great win over Douglas last Saturday in St Colmans Community College by 9-10 to 3-04 in the Premier 2 League. We got off to great start in this game with man of the match Conor Fitzgerald scoring an early goal and tormenting the visitors defence regularly throughout the whole game.Add in another couple of scores from corner forward Charlie Walsh and we were well on our way to our first win in this years league. Some great team play was in evidence from our lads, starting from our half back line of Luke Deane, Patrick Kelly and Patrick Kane midfielders Leo Hennessy and Alex Pranger, and forwards Paul Connaughton and Conor Fitzgerald. Hopefully this is the start of a good year to come from this bunch of players. Team:Bradley Savage,Trevor Shine,Nicky Hayes,Gavin Reddy, Luke Deane, Patrick Kelly, Patrick Kane, Leo Hennessy, Alex Pranger,Dan Cagney, Darragh Crowley, Paul Connaughton, Conor Fitzgerald, Ben Cummins,Charlie Walsh, Thomas Mc Grath, Jack Mc Kay, Christopher Leahy, James Coffee,Kevin O Brien Ollie Murray.

Our footballers were defeated by Carrigaline in the Premier 1 Football League last Sunday morning in St Colmans Community College by 4-09 v 2-07.
This morning Midleton Fe 15 Footballers went down to Carrigaline on a scoreline of 2-7 to 4-9. This was a fine game of football played in fine weather conditions. The result was a fair one and in the day Carrigaline were the better side. Midleton though showed a steely determination and stepped up on the performance of the first round. In Premier 1 though all games are tough and we showed that we can compete well at this level. The game opened with Midleton on the attack with the opening goal followed by a few pointed frees. Carrigaline were well in the game at this stage and scored a great goal. It was neck and neck coming up to Half Time and Midleton got the upper hand when a speculative shot found its way to the net leaning the HT score 2-4 to 1-4 in favour of Midleton.
Carrigaline bombarded the Midleton rearguard early in the second half and this generated 1-3 unanswered. When Carrigaline scored a penalty on 45 mins the writing was on the wall for our lads. We fought gallantly to the end and tapped over a few points but it just wasn't enough. Team: Jake Shanahan, Alan Power, Cormac O Brien, Adam O Connell, Griffin Hurley, Craig Barry, Conor O Leary, Mark Daly, Ross O Regan, Gary Carroll, Cian Murray, Evan Rowlands, Tommy O Connell, Coleman Quinn, Ronan Lynch, David Scanlon, Christian Murphy, Ryan O Riordan, Ciaran Evans.
