Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship Semi final
On Sunday last we played the Clare champions Sixmilebridge in perfect conditions in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Both defences were quick to get on top, they got an early goal which settled them down and although we had many scoring chances after we were chasing the game coming up to halftime. However in the last few minutes a great goal from a rebound and a point from Conor Lehane put us within a point at the break by 1-06 to 1-07. In the second half they managed a number of early points which pushed them ahead by three, we pulled it back several times but they always seemed to counter attack for vital scores. In the final ten minutes we laid siege to their goals and had two very close opportunity’s of goals but came away with nothing. Their backs shut up shop at the death and we couldn’t get the vital goal which we badly needed, it was just one of those days when little went right for us.
When the final whistle sounded it was the Banner men who were victorious and now go ahead to play the Limerick champions Na Piarsaigh in the final next Sunday.

Fe13
Midleton Fe 13 Hurlers finished the 2013 season with a comprehensive 2-13 to 1-5 victory over Sars in the final of the Premier 1 Hurling League at Cobh earlier today.
With weather conditions ideal for hurling, Midleton opened brightly but were caught with a "sucker punch" goal from a free 40 mtrs out on the right within the first 5 minutes. Midleton rallied well and tacked on a few points, before a speculative shot from out on the wing went all the way to the net making the score 1-4 to 1-1 to Midleton after 15 mins. Midleton hurled with confidence from then on and tacked on another 1-5 before half time to leave the score 2-9 to 1-2 with all six forwards scoring.
Sars came thundering into the game at the start of the second half looking for the goals they needed. Midleton's backs were up to the challenge and repelled wave after wave of Sars pressure. In a low scoring second half, the outcome was sealed when Sars lost a player who was unfortunate to be sent off for a rather innocuous second yellow. Midleton then emptied the bench and all players contributed handsomely to a fine win.
All our players showed great character, discipline and skilful hurling to win through. Great praise also to Sars who hurled manfully right to the end. The Midleton team was represented by: Ross Shanahan, Fergus Wade, Alan Power, Christian Murphy, Sean O Sullivan, Ciaran Evans, Cormac O Brien, Kian Farmer (0-1), Cian Murray, Evan Rowlands(0-1), Tunde Olotu-Jubril (0-2) Jake Shanahan (1-2), Tommy O Connell (capt) (0-3), Ross O Regan(1-0), Sam Quirke (0-4), Mark Daly, Griffin Hurley, Ryan O Riordan, Coleman Quinn, Ronan Lynch, David Scanlon, Eabhan DeBarra, Adam O Connell, Gary Carroll & Niall Higgins.

Fe16
Our hurlers came up against a very strong and in form Shandrum side in the Premier 2 league final last Saturday afternoon in Glanworth. It was a brave performance by our lads, well done to the players and management for their efforts throughout the year.
