Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Senior Hurling
On Sunday last we played Carrigtwohill away in the RedFM Senior Hurling League. Despite a blustery evening a fine crowd turned out for this local derby. We started out very brightly playing into the wind and with Brian Hartnett very accurate from frees we went in at halftime ahead by 1.07 v 0.05. Early into the second half Carrigtwohill had the upper hand and a number of points brought them to within a single point of us. But late points from Hartnett, Padraig O Farrell and Padraig O Shea pushed us four points ahead with time up only for Carrig to score a late consolation goal.
Final Score Carrigtwohill 1-12 v Midleton 1-13
Team: Tommy Wallis, Alwyn Kearney, Patrick O Mahony, Elliot Mulcahy, James Nagle, Finbar O Mahony, Seamus O Farrell, Leslie Coughlan, Peter Dowling, Ian Kennefick, Padraig O Shea, Padraig O Keeffe, Patrick White, Luke O Farrell and Brian Hartnett. Sub used Padraig O Farrell for James Nagle.

Junior Football
In Cobh last Saturday evening we played Eris Own in the East Cork Junior A Football Championship quarter final.
We began very well playing with the aid of the wind and led at halftime by 0.04 v 0.02. After the break it was very even but an error in our defence allowed them in for a goal against the run of play. However we fought back bravely and led by a point with less than five minutes to go. They earned two late free’s and up stepped their goalkeeper who converted them both and they held on for the narrowest of victories.
Two of our players Kieran Mulcahy and Declan Ryan both whom were very instrumental in the game went off injured and the team really felt their loss as the game went on. We wish them both speedy recovery’s.
Well done to the management and the players for their commitment over the last number of weeks, however it must be stated that the non appearance of some players for this game was very disappointing.
Team: Brian Behan, Joe Collins, Barry Fitzgerald, Brian O Sullivan, Liam Clohessy, Padraig O Shea, Eoin Ferriter, Patrick O Mahony, Patrice Tschmanga, , Declan Ryan, Seamus O Farrell, Ian Kennefick, Kelvin Kruschel, Kieran Mulcahy, & Shane Harrington. Subs used Willie O Brien, Keith Ryan & Davy O Brien.

Junior Hurling
In Midleton last Sunday afternoon our Junior hurlers played Ballygiblin in the Avondhu/Imokilly Hurling league and despite a brave effort over the hour we lost out on a score of 3.11 v 4.13
Team:Christopher Dunlea, Niall O Regan, Pat Fox, Joe Collins, Shane Ryan, Darren Quirke, Liam Clohessy, James O Donnell, Sean O Farrell, Mark O Keeffe, Keith Ryan, Davy O Brien, Ian O Brien &  Brian O Sullivan. Subs used Alan Stanton and John Keane.

Coaches Training
We owe a debt of gratitude to Sean Crowley (Imokilly GDA) who gave up his Saturday morning to give a coaches training session to our Midleton juvenile coaches on the 26th April. There was a good turn out from the Midleton lads and the morning turned out to be very worthwhile. Sean brought some great ideas with him and even got some Midleton oldies to compete for the ball once again. Everyone left enlightened and are sure to take the ideas to their upcoming team sessions.

Fe11
We welcomed Blackrock to the Midleton CBS tonight for what was round two of the Fe11 Hurling league in all we had thirty three players and Backrock travelled with the same amount so a great nights hurling was in store. Again we had some outstanding performances from our lads who now seem to have turned the corner after the winter off. In game one Blackrock were physically bigger and stronger than our lads but with James Coffey,Daragh Codd and Ben Cummins giving it their all we ran out winners on scoreline of 5-0 to 4-1.Game two began with two fast goals for the Rockies but some great work in defence from Patrick Kane and Conor Hayes stemed the tide for us, Some great low ball into the forwards and the scores started to come, Again hard work from the forwards was crucial and great to see 10yr old Cian Murray who was called up at short notice having a stormer in the corner scoring a great goal and setting up another one or two well done Cian we will call again. In the end we ran out winners on a scoreline of 4-7 to 3-1.This was a super game of Hurling from both sides and but for some fantastic goalkeeping from Bradley Savage in the Midleton goal a puck of the ball would’nt separate these lads. Game Three again went the way of the Magpies on a scoreline of 6-5 to 5-1 and again the story of this game was hard work and by letting the ball go on the ground our inside forwards got some good fast ball. Patrick Kelly and another 10yr old Darragh Mc Carty seemed to gel well in midfield scoring some fine scores in the process.  Well done to all the lads and to there Parents for the great commitment they are showing again we would encourage the parents to PLEASE TEXT ASAP IF YOUR SON IS UNABLE TO ATTEND MATCHES this is a great benefit to us when organising games so as we know how many lads we need to bring proof of this was tonight when every player got a full hours Hurling it can only stand to them in the end.
Thanks’ again goes to Blackrock for travelling with such large numbers ensuring this was a great workout for all involved.

Fe12
Our footballers made the trip to Cobh on Thursday 2nd May for their latest league match. With Cobh racking up some big scores so far in the league this was always going to be a tough task.
With 20 players turning up for Midleton the format was two ten a side games.
Credit to our lads who made a great start in both games fighting for each other; At half time both Midleton sides were marginally ahead. In the second half Cobh came back early in one game and despite a hard battle form one Midleton team and some great scores the Cobh team finished ahead. In the other game it was tight throughout the second half and neither side could find the winning score.
Many thanks to Cobh for hosting the match and well done to all who played on the day.

Fe14
Our hurlers travelled to Newtownshandrum recently to play the hosts and due to some players missing found the going very hard against a slick local outfit losng by 6-18 to 5-06.
Congratulations to our club players and selector Alwyn Kearney who represented Midleton CBS in their great Rice Cup semi final victory over Ard Scoil Ris, they now await either Kilkenny or Thurles CBS in the final.

Fe16
Congratulations to Seanaidh Smyth and Cormac Beausang who represented Imokilly A hurlers last weekend and won the Munster Inter Divisional Tournament defeating East Clare in the final and to Luke Finnerty who represented us on the second team.
