Midleton GAA news 27th February 2012

27 February, 2012

Senior Hurling
Our Senior Hurlers have been back in training for the last number of weeks under their new manager Peter Smith. Their preparations have been going well and this past weekend they played host to De La Salle from Waterford. In a well contested game that was of benefit to both teams our visitors emerged victorious on a scoreline of Midleton 1-09 De La sale Waterford 1-12. This game will have been ideal preparation for our Conroy Cup Senior Hurling League campaign which commences this coming weekend.

Junior Football League
Midleton 0-05 Fr.O’Neills 0-07
Our Junior A Footballers have been up and running for the last number of weeks. Last Sunday they played their third game in the League when they travelled to Agahavine to face Fr.O’Neills. The match was played in typical Spring conditions; a little misty and a light breeze. From the throw-in this was a very tense but sporting game. Midleton’s first attack saw a shot come back from the foot of the goalpost. The first half ended with both teams locked together at 3 points apiece. The second half had Midleton playing some super football but it was just one of those days where try as they might scores would not fall for them. At the final whistle Fr O’Neill’s held out to win 7 points to 5. This was a game that shows Midleton football is building very nicely for the 2012 season. Midleton Team: O’Keeffe, O’Sullivan, Fitzgerald, Collins, O’Mahoney, Dowling, Coughlan, Hennessey 1pt, Ryan 3 pts, Mulcahy, Harrington, Walsh, Ryan, Cotter, O’Brien 1 pt, Behan, Corcoran, Ferriter. This defeat makes it a win and two losses from our first three games.

Juvenile Notes

Fe-16
Midleton Under 16’s recorded their first win of the 2012 Football League with a thrilling one point victory over Mayfield on a misty Sunday afternoon.
Midleton got off to a slow start and found themselves 1–03 to no score down after only seven minutes. Gradually Midleton began to find their range however. Kalem Deady’s 10th minute point was cancelled out by another for Mayfield but the last 15 minutes of the half belonged to Midleton. They scored 5 unanswered points – Two from Kalem Deady and one each from Cillian Deady; Kieran Moloney and Colin Shanahan to trail by just 1 point at half time 1 - 04 to 0 – 06.
With the wind assisting in the second half Midleton felt confident but once again made a very poor start. Mayfield swooped for their second goal of the day after just 1 minute and quickly tacked on three more points to lead by 7 points, with ten minutes gone. Midleton picked up the pace once again however. They dug deep and began to run at the Mayfield defence. Cillian Deady scored two frees and Kalem Deady claimed his fourth point. Luke Dineen was causing difficulties for the Mayfield full back line and was rewarded with a great goal. Midleton continued to press and when Kalem Deady got the second Midleton goal it put them one point ahead. Midleton battled hard to hold on to their slim lead for the last six minutes and record a deserved victory on a scoreline of Mayfield 2-08 Midleton 2-09.
Midleton: Josh Deady; James Carroll, Cillian Lynch, Conor Morgan; Kevin Rohan; Gavin Beagnal; Cormac Beausang; Luke Morrissey; Cillian Deady (0-3); Kalem Deady (1-4), Colin Shanahan (0 -1) Seadnaidh Smyth; Lochlann McCarthy; Kieran Moloney (0-1); Glen Harty; Luke Dineen (1-0); Andrew Williams; Brian O’Mahony; Shane Buckley; Ross Cummins; James O’Brien

Fe-14
Our Fe-14 footballers continued their league program on Sat last Feb 25 with a home game played in the Community College grounds against Na Piarsaigh. In a very tight game where neither team really got into full flow but which had a number of outstanding individual displays on both sides the game was level at half time 1-2 to 5pts and finished all square also on a score of 2-8 to 1-11. Our panel on the day was J Roche (capt), L Franklin, T Abdulah, K Mulcahy, C O'Neill, K Daly, C Evans, R O'Reagan, A Daly, S O'Meara, E Moloney, C Daly, R O'Donovan, R McConville, P O'Brien, Shane O'Brien, C Shanahan, C Power, John O'Dwyer & D Mulcahy

Fe-13
Midleton under 13 football team played their first league match on 18th of Feb against Mitchelstown in St Colmans pitch.
Played in very cold conditions and against a strong breeze Midleton settled well and led after 15 mins after a goal from Christopher Power. By half time we led by 2 goals and 1 point to 1 goal and 2 points. All players deserve great credit for their display especially Harry Wall who had his best display ever in a Midleton Jersey.
The second half was easier with the aid of the very strong breeze and with good continuity and support play the forwards were able to finish with aplomb.  The game was played in a very sporting manner with both teams trying their best. My compliments to both teams for their approach  and it was a pleasure to watch our team pass and support each other so well. Midleton eventually won on a scorline of 7 goals and 5 points to 1 goal and 3 points to Mitchelstown. A good start to life in their first competitive year.
Congratulations to our 2 captains for the year Cathal Gunning in football and Harry Wall in hurling.

Fe-12
Midleton U12 Hurlers got off to a great start to the Season when they played Youghal in a practice game under lights in Youghal on Thursday evening. Youghal were great hosts. We played 2 games of 10 each side. Despite being short a number of players, both Midleton teams played a very high standard of hurling. It was tremendous to see so many players enjoying themselves and entertaining the crowd with high levels of skilful hurling. Great to see so many players out playing on a fine Spring evening. All players enjoyed themselves and while playing with distinction represented Midleton with pride. The teams were represented by:
Ross Shanahan, Fergus Wade, Tundy, Griffin Hurley, Dillon Deehan, Ross O Regan, Adam O Connell, Jake Shanahan, Cormac O Brien, Daragh Desmond, Cian Farmer, Aaron Mulcahy, Colman Quinn, Alan Power, Scott Wholohan, Harry Holohan, Evan Rowlands, Ronan Lynch, Ethan Daly, Ryan O Riordan, Cormac Hill, Colin Odobege

Fe-9
Midleton U9 Hurlers played their first match of the year on Saturday, February 25th against Lisgoold at Midleton College’s all-weather pitch. This great bunch of players have gotten straight into their stride for the new year having already completed a number of training sessions. Twenty-Nine of them turned up and all of them on time, ready for the games. Because of the big numbers –Lisgoold had an incredible 24 players – three fields had to be lined out. What followed was a fabulous hour’s display of hurling from all players present. It should also be recognised, particularly in the present GAA climate, that the level of sportsmanship from the players and all the spectators present was exemplary. Now, let’s go and build on this display in both hurling and football over the next year.

Training
Training is back in full swing for Juvenile teams. We would ask parents to encourage their children to practice during the week even if the weather is bad, parents can practice catching the ball indoors. Please remember to bring your €2 to training sessions. This money is vital to keep the juvenile section of the club funded.

Club Gear
Midleton GAA juvenile club will have a shop with club playing and leisure wear open on the first Saturday of each month. This will commence with the indoor training sessions in the Community Centre and then in the Club Pavilion once outdoor training re-commences.

Kellogs 2012 Cúl Camp
The dates are out for this years Cúl Camp. The camp will take place from the 2nd to the 6th of July. Boys from Junior Infants up are welcome to attend. Further details nearer the time for registration.
