Midleton GAA notes 18th April 2011

Fe 21 Football championship Final

Midleton 2-11 Erins own 1-12
Our Fe 21 footballers bridged a 31 year gap on Friday night when they claimed the East Cork A title on Friday night last in Cobh. After a good hour of entertainment when at various stages it looked like either team would win, a late Midleton rally produced the decisive scores and secured a famous victory for the Club. The opening twenty minutes belonged to Midleton when a succession of fine score saw us lead by 0-6 to 0-2. erins own rallied to reduce the deficit to a the minimum. Padraig O’Shea scored a fisted goal but Erins own responded with a foal of their own. At half time we led by 1-07 to 1-05. Erins own started the second period strongly with four unanswered points. They had a penalty chance which ended up going over the bar rather than under it. Midleton had made a number of personnel and positional changes and they started to have an effect. Substitutes Conor Lehane and Cormac Walsh both kicked points but the move of Ian Kennifick to full forward had the desired effect as he rattled the net to put Midleton ahead with only minutes left. In a frantic finish Erins Own had a goal chance to win it however Dara O’Keefe stepped up to the mark with an excellent match winning save. On the night Midleton had excellent performers throughout the team and the manner of their come back in the last ten minutes brought great satisfaction to the large number of Midleton supporters in attendance. A word of praise too for a fine Erins Own team who played some excellent football on the night. Well done to the players and to their mentors Davey O’Brien, Eoin Ferriter, Declan Ryan, Sean Corcoran and Kieran Mulcahy.
Team: Dara O’Keefe, Cillian Burke, Luke O’Farrell, Brian O’Sullivan, Leslie Coughlan, Seamus O’Farrell (0-1) (Capt.), Jamie O’Mahony, Patrick O’Mahony, Ian Kennifick (1-0) , Niall Madden (0-2), Shane Ryan (0-1), Pa White, Shane Harrington, Padraig O’Shea (1-2), Stephen Moore (0-2, 0-1f).
Subs Used. Cormac Walsh (0-1), Conor Lehane (0-1), Padraig O’Keefe and Paul Haughney.

Senior Hurling League
Midleton 1-07 Cloyne 0-12
We played near neighbours Cloyne in the Senior Hurling league on Monday of last week in Carrigtwohill. Both teams were short several players but it was Cloyne who showed the greater appetite throughout and emerged worthy winners on the night. It was a disappointing performance from Midleton. We never looked like imposing ourselves on the game and I am sure it will have left the mentors with plenty of food for thought as the continue their preparations for the Championship which is still eight weeks away.

Premier Minor Hurling League
Midleton 2-24 Glen Rovers 0-08
Midleton had an easy win over Glen Rovers in this League game at the Glen Field on Saturday evening. After two games we have a win and a loss.

Fe 16 Premier 1 Hurling league Midleton v Mallow in Mallow
Last Tuesday evening we played the host team in our first Hurling league game and it went quite well. We played reasonably well in the first half against the wind and only trailed by three points at half time. Although we conceded a goal early in the second half we played very well for the rest of the game and were unlucky not to come away with both points. A draw was possibly the fair result on the night. It was great to see both Alan Stanton and Brian Rossiter back in action again after missing the past year with a serious injury's.
Final Score Mallow 1.10 v Midleton 2.07
Team: Brian Rossiter, Luke Dineen, Billy O Shea, Sean O Farrell, Killian Deady, Darren Quirke, Kevin Rohan, Aaron Mc Evoy, Padraic Nagle, Eanna O Brien, Conan Finnegan, Patrice Tschmanga, Robert Williams, Michael Abernethy and Lochlinn Mc Carthy. Subs Alan Stanton, Kevin Butler, Josh Deady and Shane Buckley.

Congrats to our Fe 16 players Billy O Shea, Darren Quirke, Conan Finnegan, Michael Abernethy, Padraic Nagle and coach Padraig O Brien on their victory with the Imokilly hurlers recently in the Garry Scollard Hurling Tournament 2011 which took place in Tralee. They defeated Limerick City West, West Waterford and Seandun in the final.

Our deepest sympathys to the Aherne family Knockanore, Waterford on the death of Declan grandfather of Padraig and Sean O Farrell and also to the Deady family on the recent death of John grandfather of Killian, Calem and Josh.
Midletons Fe 14 hurlers played a challenge match at home V Kilmacud Crokes as part of the Dublin Team’s weekend away for the Cork V Dublin League hurling match. Midleton provided a stiff challenge for the Dubs and were well on top after the first period. Following a good number of changes of position and substitutions the game was a more level affair in the second period. Well done to all who participated.

 Midleton 4-13, Kilmacud Crokes 6-7

Midleton u14 hurlers hosted Kilmacud Crokes in a challenge match in Midleton yesterday evening, Sunday April 17th. The visitors, down in Cork for the weekend to see the Dublin v Cork National Hurling League game, also found time to play a series of matches.
The game was a lively one, enjoyed by all. Midleton led at half-time by 3-7 to 0-4, with goals from Garan Manley and Cormac Beausang, and very good play in defense from Séadnaidh Smyth, Ryan Mc Conville, Padraig o’Brien and Jack Enright, ably assisted by midfielder Audrey Tschmanga.
On the re-start Midleton emptied their bench ensuring everyone got a game. Kilmacud came back into it with a couple of fast goals, but Midleton pulled away again with points from Chris Shanahan and Conor Evans. However the Dublin side equalised once again with a goal near the end. For both sides it was a very satisfactory outcome on what was a beautiful evening for hurling.

Team panel: Eoin Moloney, Jack Enright, Padraig o’Brien, Eoin Collins, Ryan Mc Conville, Séadnaidh Smyth, Ross Cummins, Jordan Roche, Audrey Tschmanga, Conor Fitzgerald, Cormac Beausang, Luke Finnerty, David Mulcahy, Garan Manley, Kevin Mulcahy, Liam Franklin, Chris Shanahan, Adam Daly, Conor Evans.

Fe 13
Our Fe-13 hurlers continued their league campaign with a home game v Ballincollig on Sunday April 10th. We started the game in strong style with all the boys showing that they were well up to depend their proud home record build up over the last couple of years where they have only beaten once in competitive hurling games. The Midfield and half forward line left little ball pass the half way line and we had a good lead at halftime. Changes where made in positions and personnel for the second half and this did not impact the teams performance in any way and after another strong 30mins of play we ended up claiming the full points by a comfortable margin. The Panel on the day was: Padraig O'Brien (capt), Eoin Moloney, Sean O'Meara, Kevin Mulcahy, John O'Dwyer, Ryan McConville, Temitayo Abdullah, Adam Daly, Jordan Roche, Ryan O'Reagan, Christian Daly, David Mulcahy, Dylan Cahalane, Christopher Power, Shane O,Brien, Conor Evans, Dion O'Neill-Hill. We continue to train on Wed nights 7-8pm and Saturday mornings 10-11.30am in the CBS field and we have upcoming games away v Donoughmore and home v Blackrock next weekend we will also have a few games over the Easter Holidays as we have to pick up on Football games we cancelled due to the Belfast Trip etc.
Our U-13 Panel continued their hurling league campaign with games v Donoughmore and Blackrock recently.
First up was a Friday evening trip on April 15th to Donoughmore for an Eastern Region league game where due to a clash with other games we had to supplement our U-13 Squad with some of the U-12 panel and these boys showed up very well on the night. The blend of enthusiasm of these U-12 players and the old experienced heads like Liam, Dylan, Shane, Conor E, Dion & Kevin D. saw us through to a comfortable win on the night. Our Panel on the night was Dylan Cahalane (Capt), Tommy O'Connell, Evan O'Meara, John O'Dwyer, Kelvin Hickey, Cormac Higgins, Eoin Moloney, Conor Evans, Kevin Daly, Sean O'Leary, Dion O'Neill-Hill, Liam Franklin, Harry Wall, Shane O'Brien, Andrew Nestor, Sean Barrett & Conor O'Farrell.

Midleton under 11 traveled to Youghal on Friday evening 15th and played there part in what was a very entertaining contest. The match was very evenly contested and the skill shown by both sides was a joy to watch. All the boys played very well and if this effort is shown all the time a great season in football and hurling awaits us.
Team: Ross Shanahan Niall higgins David Scanlon Ross O'Regan Fionn O'Connell Alan Horgan Liam Ryan Adam O'Connell Cormac O'Brien Scott Wolohan.
Midleton Fe 10 hurling V St Finbarrs

Fe 10 Hurling
Saturday 16th April saw a lovely morning and a well presented pitch for our Fe 10's first hurling home fixture this year. We were a good few players short of a full complement due to social commitments (Happy Birthday Cian)! That said we were helped out by some of the Fe 9 squad in order to meet the number requirement. We lined out with two even teams of 11 and faced two able teams from St Finbarrs. The format was two matches of 10 minutes each side.
Our lads played their hearts out and some fine performances particularly in defence were a credit to them. Overall the teams came out level, due in no small part to the battling qualities of Midleton. The quality of hurling now facing our lads is growing and practice at home is more important than ever.
Thanks to St Finbarrs for making the trip and well played.

Fe 9 hurling V Douglas
On Thursday the 14th we played Douglas at home in what turned out to be a great evenings hurling.Douglas arrived with 27 players and we had 33 so we had 3 pitches made up and picked 3 teams of 10aside each.We played three 15 Min's aside games moving players to different positions for each 15.We rotated 3 of our players to play with Douglas so the games were even all round. All players showed great improvement in what turned out to be very even games. Many thanks to Douglas for coming down and to all the parents for the support,we will be travelling to Douglas in the next few weeks for a return match.
