Midleton Hurling and Football, Ladies Football and Camogie Club Notes - September 12

12 September, 2024

SENIORS BOOK QUARTER-FINAL SPOT

MIDLETON 0-23 ERINS OWN 1-17

Our senior hurlers topped their group and booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship after a hard-fought East Cork derby win over Erin Own in Pairc Uí Rinn on Sunday.

16 wides didn't make life easy for us but as the old adage goes, a win is a win and it's on the knockout stages and a meeting with Newtownshandrum on Friday week.

Erins Own opened the scoring before we hit three points in a row through Conor Lehane, Mikey Finn and Luke O'Farrell to make it 0-3 to 0-1 after nine minutes.

Futher points from Luke O'Farrell (2), Pa White, Conor Lehane (3) and Alex Quirke saw us lead by 0-10 to 0-5 with 20 minutes on the clock as we were playing with a decent breeze.

Erins Own struck back with two white flags before Cormac Beausang and Conor Lehane (2) points put us 0-13 to 0-7 in front with two minutes to play in the opening period.

The Caherlag men finished the half with two frees to ensure that we held a four point advantage at the midway point on a scoreline of 0-13 to 0-9.

Alex Quirke putting the Erins Own defence on the back foot in Pairc Uí Rinn.

Erins Own opened the second-half scoring to cut our lead to three before two from Conor Lehane and an Erins Own free saw us lead by four with six minutes of the second period played just before Erins Own struck for the game's only goal to put a single point between the teams.

Swapped points (ours from Mikey Finn) maintained our one point lead with 20 minutes to go before Erins Own struck two in a row from play to hit the front for the first time since the opening score of the game, 1-14 to 0-16.

Swapped frees from Conor Lehane and Robbie O'Flynn meant that the Erins Own men still led by one with 14 minutes to go but then we hit four in the trot, three from Conor Lehane and one from Mikey Finn to see us lead by three, 0-21 to 1-15, with seven to play.

Robbie O'Flynn cut the gap again before two Conor Lehane frees gave us a four point lead and a stoppage time white flag for Erins Own was too little too late for a hard fought but deserved win for the men in Black and White.

Scorers: Midleton: Conor Lehane 0-14 (0-8 f, 0-1 '65), Mikey Finn, Luke O’Farrell 0-3 each, Cormac Beausang, Pa White, Alex Quirke, 0-1 each.

MIDLETON: Bríon Saunderson; Seannaidh Smyth, Luke Dineen, Ciarmhac Smyth; Sean O’Meara, Tommy O’Connell, Eoin Moloney; Mikey Finn, Paul Haughney; Ross O’Regan, Alex Quirke, Conor Lehane (Captain); Cormac Beausang, Pa White, Luke O’Farrrell. Subs: David Cremin for O’Regan, Sam Quirke for Haughney (both '39), Paul Connaughton for Beasaung ('42).

As mentioned above, this win means that we are now into the knockout stages of the Co-Op Superstores PSHC where we will play Newtownshandrum in the quarter-finals in Pairc Uí Rinn on Friday week, September 20 at 8pm. The winners will play champions Sarsfields in the semi-finals.

On that Sunday (September 22) we will host an attractive double header at Clonmult Memorial Park. In the Co. SAHC Killeagh will take on Blarney at 2pm, while at 4pm Fr. O'Neills will take on Imokilly in the PSHC.

COUNTY INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

MIDLETON 1-19 AGHADA 0-16

The superbly appointed Castlemartyr was the venue on Saturday for an entertaining East Cork derby against Aghada in the Co-Op Superstores Intermediate A Hurling Championship in front of a large attendance.

Aghada opened the scoring after just 29 seconds before we hit five points in a row through Gary Carroll, Aaron Mulcahy (3) and Kian Farmer to see us lead by 0-5 to 0-1 after 13 minutes.

Points from Aidan Ryan, Aaron Mulcahy (2) and Kian Farmer saw us lead by 0-9 to 0-3 on 22 minutes but Aghada stormed back into the contest with four in a row to cut the gap to two with a minute to play in the opening period.

A point from an Aaron Mulcahy free and an Aghada free in response saw us lead by two at the halfway stage, 0-10 to 0-8.

After swapped frees to start the second-half, Tiarnán Roche set up Aaron Mulcahy for the game's only goal on 34 minutes to put us 1-11 to 0-9 in front.

Moments later we were reduced to 14 after a straight red for Adam Daly and Aghada responded with two white flags to cut the gap to a goal with 19 to play.

It was tit for that from here on and with ten to play we still led by two.

We then hit a crucial three points on the trot from Gary Carroll and two from Aaron Mulcahy. Aghada struck back from play, before they were reduced to 14, but Aaron Mulcahy had the last say with two pointed frees to seal a great win and passage to the knockout stages.

We must wish Leo Hennessy and Tadhg O'Leary Hayes well as they both picked up injuries in this game and hopefully they'll both be back in the Black and White as soon as possible.

It was also great to see Dave Scanlon come on after a long injury layoff.

Scorers Midleton: Aaron Mulcahy 1-14 (0-10 frees), Gary Carroll and Kian Farmer 0-2 each, Aidan Ryan 0-1.

MIDLETON: Cillian Hurley (Captain), Cormac O'Brien, Christian Murphy, Gavin Bagnell, Leo Hennessy, Adam Fay, Evan McCarthy, Tadhg O'Leary Hayes, Adam Daly, Aaron Mulcahy, Aidan Ryan, Gary Carroll, Tiarnán Roche, Kian Farmer, Cian Crowley. Subs used: Billy O'Shea, Dave Scanlon, Padraig O'Brien.

This win saw us top our group and go straight through to the semi-finals for the second year in a row. There we will meet the winners of the Erins Own v Mayfield game.

EAST CORK OIL JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

MIDLETON 1-18 ST ITAS 0-22

Tomas Dunlea bursting out of defence against St. Itas in Castlemartyr. Photos: Denis O'Flynn

Our Junior A hurlers travelled to Castlemartyr on Friday night as underdogs against a highly fancied St. Itas side but on the night our young Magpies put on a terrific display and were very unlucky not to leave with a great victory.

Points from Cathal Beausang, Niall Lang (2) and Darragh Egan saw us lead by 0-4 to 0-1 after eight minutes.

St Itas, inspired by Cork senior Seamus Harnedy, then struck eight in a row to lead by 0-9 to 0-4 after 19 minutes.

We hit back with three of the next four points, from Carthraigh Cronin, Cathal Beausang and Dara Scanlon to cut the gap to three with 27 minutes on the clock before Conor Morley struck for the game's only goal to ensure a draw game on 1-7 to 0-10 and two Cathal Beausang frees and one from Seamie Harnedy saw us lead at the break on a score of 1-9 to 0-11.

Points from Eogha Fraser, Cathal Beausang (2) and a Dara Scanlon '65 saw us lead by a goal (1-13 to 0-13) with 19 minutes to play.

But the Gortroe men hit the next six in a row to lead by 0-19 to 1-13 with seven minutes to play.

We then hit the next four, in a pulsating game, through two each from Cathal Beausang and Dara Scanlon to see us lead by one with a minute of injury time to play.

St Itas hit the next three white flags before Dara Scanlon finished the scoring. We could have levelled the game late on from a free but we pressed for a goal that would have helped our cause of progressing to the knockout stages. A tremendous effort by all concerned.

Dara Scanlon gets his pass away against St. Itas.

Midleton scorers: Cathal Beausang 0-8 (0-6 f), Dara Scanlon 0-5 (0-4 f), Conor Morley 1-0, Niall Lang 0-2, Eoghan Fraser, Darragh Egan, Carthraigh Cronin 0-1 each.

MIDLETON: Zach Smith; Carthraigh Cronin, Alex Moloney, Tomas Dunlea; Dara Scanlon, Patrik Kane, Alan Power (Captain); Eoghan Fraser, Darragh Egan, Jack Fitzgerald, Niall Lang, Cian Lambe, Conor Morley, Chris Power, Cathal Beausang. Subs used: Dan Cagney for Lang (22, inj), Harry Wall for C Power (46), Charlie Walsh for Kane (50-55 bs).

We will now take on Carrigtwohill in a relegation playoff to preserve our status at this grade.

CAMOGIE

STREET LEAGUES

Tuesday, September 3 saw the start of the annual Street Leagues Tournament. It was a great evening of camogie where each girl battled hard throughout the matches. Well done to all and thanks to all the mentors and coaches for putting in the time to organise these matches.

UNDER 12S

On Saturday morning our U-12 (Black team) played their final game of phase four of the U-12 league against Valley Rovers. It was great to finish the league with a win and to see the girls play so well as a team, hooking blocking and passing a plenty. Well done to all the girls - we are very proud of your hard work this morning and over the last number of months.

Our U12 (White team) played Na Piarsaigh away in Fair Hill on Sunday. It was a great game between two evenly matched teams with both teams challenging and contesting the sliothar well in all areas of the pitch. Despite our effort we didn't come out the winners on the scoreline but we learnt a lot from the game and the girls should be very proud of themselves. Well done girls.

UNDER 13S

Well done to our U-13 girls who put in a full day of matches at the O’Callaghan Cup Camogie blitz at Inniscarra on Saturday. We couldn’t have asked more from the girls playing at very high level and great work rate against tough competitive teams throughout the day. Thank you to our hosts Inniscarra for welcoming us and making it such an enjoyable day.

PREMIER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

MIDLETON 3-7 CASTLELYONS 1-8

In dreary and wet conditions in Youghal GAA, we got our Premier Junior Championship campaign off to a winning start against a very skilful and tough Castlelyons team.

Despite trailing by four points after just a couple of minutes the girls knuckled down really well and pulled out a fantastic victory in what was  a great game of camogie.

After the slow start we recovered to lead by a point at HT 1-5 to 1-4. Rachel Ryan getting her first two goals on the night. Lucy Wallace (0-1) was outstanding all night and with Roisin McManus (0-1), on her championship debut at adult level, alongside her in midfield we slowly but surely got on top.

Another goal by Rachel Ryan and a third by Sadhbh Beausang was the clinching score. Overall it was great team performance. Jill Connaugton solid as a rock as always in goals, Molly Beausang, Laura Goulding, Sorcha Cronin were all excellent in our half back line.

Up front Kate O'Sullivan (0-2) worked tirelessly all night as did Kelly Quirke (0-1) who popped up with a fantastic point when one was badly needed in the second-half. Sadhbh Beausang 1-1 and Rachel Ryan 2-0 contributed handsomely on the scoreboard.

MIDLETON: Jill Connaughton, Meghan Wallace, Leah Hogan, Kate Saunderson, Molly Beausang, Laura Goulding, Sorcha Cronin, Lucy Wallace (0-1), Yvonne Abernethy, Abbie Foley (0-1f), Roisin McManus (0-1), Sadhbh Beausang (1-1), Kate O'Sullivan (0-2), Rachel Ryan (2-0), Kelly Quirke (0-1), Hannah Power, Kate Griffin, Roisin O'Callaghan, Rayanna Power, Beth Ryan, Caoimhe Cronin, Eva Butler, Rebecca Cassidy.

PREMIER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

MIDLETON 1-9 TRACTON 0-2

In our second game of the championship we saw off Tracton in Castle Road.

Without ever reaching the heights of the previous week we controlled the game for the most part and our five points to nil lead didn't really reflect our first-half dominance, aided by a strong wind.

We kicked on again after half-time and a Lucy Wallace goal killed off any chance of a Tracton revival. This win put us in a strong position to top the group and qualify straight into a semi-final.

MIDLETON: Jill Connaughton, Meghan Wallace, Megan Kelly, Kate Saunderson, Molly Beausang, Laura Goulding, Sorcha Cronin, Lucy Wallace (1-0), Yvonne Abernethy, Abbie Foley, Roisin McManus (0-6 5Fs), Sadhbh Beausang, Kate O'Sullivan (0-2), Jodie Keegan O'Connell, Rachel Ryan (0-1), Hannah Power, Kate Griffin,  Roisin O'Callaghan, Rayanna Power,  Beth Ryan, Caoimhe Cronin, Lucy Kenneally, Tia Wallace, Pippa Hennessey, Muireann Ni Conchubhair, Elle McManus.

LILY GRANT CHAMPIONSHIP

MIDLETON 0-5 BALLYGARVAN 3-9

Our second team began their championship campaign in Ballygarvan.

Despite a good start in the game where we led by 0-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes Ballygarvan fought back strongly and with some experienced players in their ranks they led 1-6 to 0-3 at half-time.

Despite playing against the wind in the second-half we kept battling to the end but just could not get the scores to stay with Ballygarvan. In our league campaign we also lost our first game and still managed to qualify for the final.

Our next game up is St Finbarrs in Park South. A win there will get us back on track and no doubt this group will give it their all again.

Elle McManus and Caoimhe Cronin were outstanding in our fullback line. Rebecca Ryan was superb all night in a variety of positions. Lucy Kenneally never stopped in midfield and up front Saoirse Ni Theangana, Rayanna Power and Jade Fitzgerald kept going to the end. It was great to have some U16s involved as well and they all showed they will be future stars at adult level for Midleton.

MIDLETON: Kate Griffin , Elle McManus, Roisin O'Callaghan, Beth Ryan, Caoimhe Cronin, Rebecca Ryan, Muireann Ni Chonchubhair, Eva Butler Lucy Kenneally, Lily Kelly, Saoirse Ni Theangana (0-5 4f), Rayanna Power, Jade Fitzgerald, Ciara Mc Grath, Cara Pyne, Lucy Murphy, Julie Murphy, Emma Fitzgerald.
