Midleton Hurling and Football, Ladies Football and Camogie Club Notes - August 16

16 August, 2024

ALL-IRELAND CHAMPIONS

Last Sunday was a memorable day for Cork Camogie in Croke as the county's seniors and intermediates were both crowned All-Ireland champions after two very hard fought and highly entertaining encounters with Galway and Kilkenny respectively.

There were many Midleton connections with the big day and all at our club would like to extend a massive congratulations to our former player Ger Manley, Clodagh Finn (sister of Midleton senior hurler Mikey) and all the senior players and management and to our former selector Mark 'Fanta' O'Sullivan and all the intermediate players and management on their brilliant wins.

We were very well represented in Croke Park on Sunday (see camogie notes for more).

CAMOGIE

UNDER 11S

Our U11s played away to Aghada last Wednesday. The girls showed great skill and determination throughout the game. Their skills are improving with each game. Well done to all the girls.

UNDER 13S

Our U13s hosted Eire Óg in a challenge match last Thursday night. It was really impressive display by all of the girls coming away with a comprehensive victory in the end. A great start after a summer break as the girls are preparing for the U14B championship in the coming weeks.

UNDER 14S

Congratulations to our U14 girls on a great win away to Castlemartyr last Wednesday night.

And then they were back in actin against Carrigtwohill on Tuesday evening in Park South. The result was a draw with both teams putting in great effort all over pitch.

U-14 CORK PANEL

Well done to Saoirse Murphy Lane who was part of the U14 Cork panel who took part in a national blitz on Sunday. Cork played Tipperary first and beat them which was a great start but lost to very strong Derry and Kilkenny teams. Cork ended up playing Antrim in a very close final but ran out losers in the end. Well done Saoirse who had some great games.

CORK DOUBLE

A full bus from Midleton travelled early on Sunday morning to cheer on the Senior and Intermediate Cork teams in Croke Park. The girls had a great day out and thank you to the parents who travelled and the organisers. The day was made all the more special with two great wins. Rebels Abú.

MIDLETON GAA SKILLS CAMP A GREAT SUCCESS

This week we held a three day camp for our young Magpies. Many thanks to all our coaches and assistants for making it a very successful few days. It takes a lot of planning and organising to hold these events so thank you to our volunteer co-ordinators Gráinne O'Brien, Mairead Beausang, Mary Quinn, Tracy Saunderson, Tracey Ryan and Michael Carroll for all their efforts.

We had a few visitors to the camp from our senior team, Tommy O'Connell, Sam Quirke, Conor Lehane and Bríon Saunderson and our Junior ladies footballer and former Cork star Orlagh Farmer.

Here's a few pics from a great camp....

As part of our camp we welcomed our Ukrainian friends from East Cork.

A parent who attended with the group sent the following message :

“Thank you for the amazing opportunity for our Ukrainian children to participate in the exciting Summer Camp at Midleton GAA! The kids gained a unique experience and left with many positive emotions and memories.”

MAGPIES ALL STARS

The Magpies All-Stars enjoyed an excellent three days at the Midleton GAA One Club Skills Camp this week.

The weather cooperated for the most part, with just one brief shower catching us off guard. The players were thrilled to meet some of our outstanding Midleton and Cork players, including Bríon Saunderson, Conor Lehane, and Orlagh Farmer. Magpies All-Stars Abú

Our junior C hurlers open their East Cork championship campaign on Saturday (August 10) when they host St. Catherines in Clonmult Memorial Park 4.30pm. Best of luck lads.

JUVENILES

FÉ14S

The annual Bill O'Keeffe Fé14 hurling tounrament took place on Sunday last in Park South.

As well as two Midleton teams, we welcomed two Danesfort (Kilkenny) teams, two Douglas teams and also Monaleen (Limerick) and Ardmore (Waterford).

It was a great tournament with some great hurling on display.

A big thanks to Shane O'Dowd for doing an excellent job as organiser.

We got to both finals but we lost out Danesfort in the Cup Final and Ardmore in the Shield Final. Still a great showing from our young Magpies.

Mary Quinn presents the Bill O'Keeffe Cup to the Danesfort captain.

Liam O'Keeffe presents the Bill O'Keeffe Shield to the Ardmore captain.
