After a busy few weeks of Hurling Matches we concentrated on the Gaelic Football this weekend. We had great numbers for Training and the lads enjoyed all the new Drills we set up for them. We will continue to do Gaelic Football Training for the next few weeks as we have a Football Blitz in Pairc ui Chaoimh in October.

Training will continue on Saturday mornings from 10am-11am on the main pitch.

On Saturday morning we commenced a mini street leagues between our panel which will run over the next few weekends. Players and Coaches were divided into 5 teams, St Endas, Sons of Rest, The Forkums, The Saints and Owenacurra. On what was a beautiful morning for hurling our lads really enjoyed the set up and the enthusiasm, skills and determination on show throughout the morning was fantastic to watch. A great morning was had by all and we look forward to next round of action on Saturday from 10am. Thanks to Micheal Keohane for organising the morning with the programmes going down a treat with both the players and parents.

On Saturday we travelled to Killeagh to take part in a blitz including the host club, Kiltha Og and Erin’s Own. Midleton 1 lost to Killeagh in their first game, beat Erin’s Own in the second game and then faced off against Kiltha Og in their final game to decide who would advance to the final. The scores were tied at half time, but a few shrewd substitutions by Kiltha swung the game in their favour in the second half and saw them win and advance to the final.
Midleton 2 took the pitch in their first game against Kitha Og. The Magpies fell 7 points behind early in the second half but should great grit to pull out a draw with a goal in the final seconds of the game. Midleton 2 then faced Erin’s Own in a game that would decide the group and determine who would advance to the final. The game was a tense and tight affair but the old adage that goals wins games proved true as Erin’s Own won on the score line of 3-2 to 1-6. Midleton 2 can count themselves very unlucky not to have won this game, but came up against an Erin’s Own goal keeper who was in stunning form.
These games were very fast paced and hard fought. Our players will have learned plenty from these games and we have plenty of areas to work on in training in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday evening we traveled to Sallybrook to play Glanmire in football. Despite being well down on our usual numbers those boys who turned up on the evening were determined that they leave Glanmire with their heads held high and that they certainly did. All 24 boys put in a massive effort, displaying some fine teamwork, skill and effort. Despite not having much football training done during the year the boys took to the game from the beginning with some great defending and score taking, taking the game to Glanmire. Very encouraging to see the effort put in by this group despite our low numbers and being up against a strong Glanmire outfit. A massive thank you to John Healy and his fellow selectors for the welcome and help with players on the night, it was very much appreciated. A thanks also to the parents who made the effort to get our players to Glanmire for the 6:45 start and for staying to cheer on the Midleton boys.

Our Panel on the day was :

Patrick O'Brien, Charlie McCarthy, Patrick Spelman, Alex Wilson,John O'Sullivan, Daniel Moloney, Cathal O'Neill, Aaron Murphy, Finn Murray, Hugh Barry, Daire Crowley, Charlie O'Sullivan, Dan O'Connell, Nojus Jurciukonis, Ronan Mackessy, Kian Crowley, Dylan McInerney, Kevin Lester, Charlie Cahill, Billy Murphy, Ian Lambe, David Seale, Michael Bertocchi, Michael O Connor.

We return with hurling training on Thursday evening in the Tech Field from 6:30-8pm (light dependent).

On a beautiful September morning, our Fé 12’s travelled to Innishannon. In our final league game we took on Valley Rovers. From the off we took the game to our opponents. The hurling was tough in the opening exchanges but our lads were able to match what was thrown at them. After sharing the the first few scores, we took control with two quick fire goals from Cian Fitz. With midfielders Sean Crowley and Josh Foley (who were dominating ) picking up any breaking ball and using it well. This ensured our forwards got a good supply of ball at all times. Two goals from the hard working Noah Cahill put us in complete control at the short whistle. On the resumption we picked off some good scores, a trend that continued throughout the half. With Peter Barrett, Conor Finn and the impressive Cahill, who buried two more goals were playing particularly well at this point. They were ably assisted by Lochlann Stewart, Rian O Driscoll and goalkeeper Diarmud Lester. The lads kept going to the end and picked off some very good scores. At the final whistle the lads were overjoyed as we have now qualified for the semifinals. Well done again lads. Final Score - Midleton 6-11 to Valley Rovers 1-07

C3 - On Sunday, we made the long trip to Ballyanly. There we took on Inniscarra in the next round of the C3 hurling league. In what was a tough encounter ( as always ) , we narrowly came out on top. There was some very good performances on the day, lead by Captain Dara O Conchubhair, Shane O Mahony, Conor Bennett, Jake Kirby and goalkeepers Diarmud Lester to mention a few. We are now waiting to see if we have qualified for the semifinals. To be in this position with both teams is a great achievement. Well done lads.

A busy week for our U 13’s began on Monday when we faced Douglas at home in our last scheduled P1 Hurling fixture. This match was a winner take all encounter with a place in the semi finals the reward for the winner. We began well with some very early pressure on the Douglas goal this resulted in a 65 which James McSweeney pointed. We wasted a number of opportunities and Douglas took full advantage with two points from play. Despite this we continued to hurl well and had two points from play one from James and one from Daniel Garde, James pointed another free followed by two well taken points one front the lively Peter Barrett and another excellent score from Darragh Egan. Douglas pointed from play before a Daniel Garde point just before the half time whistle left the score line Midleton 7 points, Douglas 3 points. Despite the strong first half we had reason to be worried at half time, we felt we should have been further ahead. Douglas tore into us on the resumption they had 3 well taken points all from play in the early minutes, our nerves were settled when Peter struck for a goal but Douglas responded again with another point from play. We weathered the storm with some stout defending and excellent play from John Paul McManus, Josh Carey, Conor Williams and Adam O Connor. Callum McSweeney also had a fine second half in a man marking role. James McSweeney and Thomas Dunlea were delivering quality ball from mid field into our forwards, after some brave play Paddy Walsh goaled, more pressure saw Odhran Dennigan goal again, soon after James added two more points from frees to see us home on a score of Midleton 3.09 Douglas 0.07. Darragh Egan and Conor Morley had impressive outings while Daniel Garde was a threat every time he got the ball. With such a strong panel some of the lads who came on (Fionn Kelly, Yohanis Mehigan and Odhran Dennigen) also made telling contributions for what was a well deserved victory. It looks like us V Ballincollig in the semi final, we await the date and look forward to the next challenge, well done lads.

Tuesday evening we were at home again this time Glen Rovers were the opposition in the C3 Hurling league. The Glen began the brighter and had an early point from a free, the exchanges were even but after some great build up play Darragh Egan struck for a goal this was quickly followed by an excellent Sean McSharry point from play. The Glen responded and had 3 points from play on the trot, the hard working Matthew Gregory found the net before Jack Foley and Fionn Kelly had a point each from play, Callum O’Brien then goaled. The half ended with three excellent Sean McSharry points from play to leave the score at the short whistle Midleton 3.06 Glen Rovers 0.04. A Jack Foley free saw us begin the second half brightly, Adam O Connor then pointed from play before the Glen struck for a goal, they quickly added another point from play but Fionn Kelly pointed a beauty and Callum Deegan added another after some intense goal mouth action. Final Score Midleton 3.10 Glen Rovers 1.05. There were some excellent performances; Fionn Kelly at mid field had an excellent hour, Callum O’Brien had an outstanding match winning some fantastic ball and linking up well with his team mates, Sean McSharry was in clinical form as usual while Ben Fitzpatrick, Senan Gleeson and Yohanis Mehigan were excellent in defence Shane McNamara and Gearoid Cashman were in fine form and Jack Foley showed some great touches in what was a fine team performance. This result sees us through to the last four, this has been a very good league campaign the lads only being beaten once, we await the semi final draw, it’s fantastic to have our season extend into the Autumn, great stuff lads.

Last Friday evening Midleton under 14s travelled to Pairc Ui Chaoimh to play Sars in the Championship Semi Final on the 4G pitch. Training had gone very well the previous Wednesday evening. After travelling together by bus we arrived in plenty of time for the lads to soak in the atmosphere and have a puck around on the pitch. The mood in the dressing room was very positive, the lads were calm and relaxed. The team was announced and we took to the pitch led by our captain Alex Moloney. The warm up went well, everyone good to go, final few words said. In the opening 10 minutes Sars took it to our lads and had two unanswered points. We were finding it tough to settle, probably the astro and the lighting as the evening was turning. Then Midleton won a free, this was confidently converted by Daragh fitz. We were up and running. Slowly we found our feet in midfield with Niall Lang and Alex Moloney, our backs tightened and the crowd got more involved. Fitz struck for a second point, this one from open play. Following an incredible run from midfield Alex Moloney with great work from Tagdh Bohan and James Mcswenney slotted the ball to the Sars net to lead 1-2 to 2 points. Not surprising Sars came back with 2 points of their own. The game had settled now. Zach was delivering every puck out with tremendous accuracy, our backs, Daragh Ahern, Daragh Scanlon, Adam Collins, Rory Lester, Tagdh O Leary Hayes and Carthaig Cronin worked extremely hard and allowed nothing go by. Another free for Midleton, again converted by Fitz. Sars conceded a 65 due to the pressure both Evan McGrath and Eoin Higgins were putting on them. Up steps our full back, Daragh Scanlon and belts the ball straight over the black spot. Cian Lambe had their centre back in a hoop, James Mcswenney was taking his man on and getting by. Huge pressure, another free, another point followed quickly by another from open play by Fitz. Last minute or two of the first half, Sars get a point of their own. Half time Midleton 1-6 Sars 5 points. Midleton had worked very hard in the opening half but all the lads wanted to do was get out and work twice as hard in the second half. A couple of calm words and we were ready to roll. Sars took to the field, Midleton left them there for a moment or two and one could sense that tonight was the turning point in the Midleton Sars rivilary of these two teams. Sars pounced with a point.Niall and his midfield partner Alex were like men possessed. First sub Eoin Frazer for James. Tagdh Bohan got a wonderful score from play to open the gap a little, back came Sars with a point followed by a goal which levelled the game. The crowd at this stage got very involved, the noise level and tension rose all over the field. Four yellow cards, 2 to Sars and 2 to our Midleton angels were shown. However when it mattered it was Midleton who drove on. Another free won, why?, because of the pressure the Sars half back line were under. From the resulting strike the sliothar sailed into the Sars net. Alex Howard was introduced for Cian who had worked himself to a standstill. Sars struck again with a point. Zach pulled off an incredible save and the ball was quickly cleared. Soon after the full time whistle was blown and it is Midleton who advance to the County under 14s final. Final score Midleton 2-7 Sars 1-8. Panel: Zach Smith, Daragh Ahern, Daragh Scanlon( 0 1), Adam Collins, Rory Lester, Tagdh O Leary Hayes, Carthaig Cronin, Alex Moloney (1 0),Niall Lang, Tagdh Bohan( 0 1),Cian Lambe,  James Mcswenney, Daragh Fitzgerald (1-5),  Eoin Higgins, Evan McGrath,  Daniel Garde,  Conor Williams,  Alex Howard,  Sean Cronin, Oscar Brennan,  Thomas Dunlea,  Eoin Frazer. Many thanks to all those who supported the team on the night and we look forward to seeing you all again for the final.

Camogie

On Sunday morning 8th September we travelled to St.Catherines grounds in Ballynoe for the next round of the East Cork Camogie Blitzes. Our opposition were St. Catherines, Fr. O Neills and Youghal, with plenty of young magpies primed and ready to take on the other teams in conditions perfect for camogie. Over the course of the blitz each team played four games, so all our players saw plenty of game time. Once again, all our players showed great work ethic, team spirit and determination in all their games. Everyone performed brilliantly and we really enjoyed the well organised camogie fun. Thanks to all the supporters and our hosts St. Catherines, Well done again to all the young ladies on a super effort.

Our U11 girls played in a very entertaining blitz in Cobh also on Sunday last 8th September playing Cobh Castlelyons and Ballygarvan in three excellent games. The performance and effort from the girls was superb on a very hot day. Some of the passages of play were outstanding with great blocking and hooking from all the girls. Excellent hand passing shooting and catching in the air from the girls well done to all of the team and to all the parents for attending and supporting the girls. Thanks also to Jay Keating for the photos much appreciated as always and to Mark Moran in Cobh for hosting.

On Thursday last our U12s bowed out of the Imokilly U13 league at the semi final stage to a very strong Castlelyons side, although our girls were leading at half time Castlelyons came back and just ran out worthy winners in the end. Pictured is our Captain Cara. Well done girls and to all involved great achievement to get this far .

We would like to wish our U14A girls the very best of luck in the Cup Championship quarter final V Sarsfields on Sunday 15th September. Also the very best of luck to our U12B girls who have made it all the way to the County Final! Midleton will take on Valley Rovers on Saturday 21st September at 12.15pm on the main pitch at Castle Roads Camogie grounds. Come along and support these fantastic group of girls !

Midleton U14girls played Cobh in round 2 of the County A1 league on 3rd September last in Ballinacurra. Midleton elected to play against a slight breeze in the opening half and after a bright start but not managing to reflect our early chances on the scoreboard we found ourselves 0-5 to 0-1 down against a very efficient Cobh side. However just before the interval we managed a couple of important scores to go in level at 1-2 to 0-5. The second half proved to be more productive for the Midleton girls who managed to score 4 goals. The final result was a win for the girls 5-2 to 0-6 and this sets up an effective quarter final against Erins Own at the end of September.

Midleton panel and scorers () on the night was as follows: Jill Connaughton, ,Elle McManus, Tori Buckley,Jade Fitzgerald ,Isabelle Nestor (1-0) , Ruthi Hennessy, Muireann Ni Chonchubhair ,Emma O'Sullivan (Capt) , Emily Lamb (1-1) ,Kelly Quirke, Aoife Fitzgerald (1-0), Saoirse Ni Theangana ,Anna Sheehan, Lora Dineen, Rachel Ryan (2-1) ,Emma O'Neill, Grace Kelleher, Rionnach Finn,Rachel Greene, Beth Ryan ,Amy McCarthy, Seana O'Brien.

Well done to Midleton players Kelly Quirke, Saoirse Twomey-Tagney, Laura Goulding & Isabelle Nestor who played for Imokilly U13’s on Saturday 14th September in a divisional blitz in Castlemartyr. Imokilly played Muskerry, Carbery, Seandun & Carrigdhoun in the group stages winning all their matches. They went on to play Muskerry again in the Cup final winning the tournament out. Great team work and skillful play from all the girls throughout and a well deserved win.

Our under 11’s played Na Piarsaigh today in Midleton in very hot conditions. The girls were excellent throughout showing great attitude and some outstanding performances. Blocking hooking lifting hand passing shooting and catching were all prominent in the game. The girls also got some fantastic scores. Thanks to Na Piarsaigh for travelling.

U16 County Championship quarter final.

We took on Ballinora last Wednesday evening in Ballinacurra on what was a beautiful evening for camógie. We started slowly and were 2 points down but the girls settled quickly and played very well, in particular the inside forward line of Orla Evans, Chloe Garde and Abbie Foley leading 4 06 to 0 4. We continued playing some great passages of camogie in the second half taking some great scores and defending very well in particular Leah Hogan. Midleton ran out comprehensive winners on a scoreline of 5 09 to 0 11.

U16 County league 2nd Rd.

We travelled down to Youghal last Friday in what turned out to be an epic battle between two very even teams. Again like the previous Wednesday the field was in great condition in the evening sun. This was a very physical contest from start to finish with Clara McCarthy as usual unerring in her frees from all parts of the field. Scores from play, were hard to come by and both goalies were outstanding. We were down 0 6 to 0 3 at halftime. We started the second half strongly and were helped by a fortuitous goal from a Clara free. Mischa Daly was outstanding in our defence. Going into the final minute we led by 2 points, however Youghal had one final goal chance only for Jill Connaughton to pull off a point blank save and clearance to the sound of the final whistle. Everyone of the girls were outstanding. Final score Midleton 1 09 Youghal 0 10. We play Enniskeane in the next round.
