Our hurlers kicked off their Championship campaign last Wednesday evening on a perfect  Castletownroche surface with a fine victory over Shandrum on a scoreline of 3-19 to 2-09.
We led at the break by 1-12 to 1-06 but a series of bad wides on the restart had us frustrated for a period of time but we eventually pulled away in the last quarter for the win.
Well done to all the players and management.

Field Fixture
On Sunday last we hosted the Senior Hurling Championship Rd2 double header between Killeagh v St Finbarr’s and Bride Rovers v Na Piarsaigh. Before a fine crowd the Barrs defeated Killeagh by 2-15 to 2-13 and Bride Rovers were impressive winners over Na Piarsaigh by 2-24 to 0-17. Thanks to the Board for allowing us to host these games but a special thanks to all our members who helped out both in the build up to the game and for the many hours throughout the games, it’s very much appreciated, well done to everyone.

Camogie (Camógaíochta)
U11: We travelled to Fr O’Neill’s on Saturday last to take part in an U9 blitz, we played St Finbarrs, Killeagh and  the hosts. The girls played really well in all three matches. It was a great afternoon of camogie despite the odd shower. Thanks to Fr O Neill’s for the invitation.

U12:  Our U12 blacks met St Finbarrs on Saturday last in Ballinacurra it was a mighty performance against the traditionally strong   camogie club. There were great battles all over the pitch but we just came out on the right side of the result.  We would like to thank the Barrs for a great game and thank to family and friends for the wonderful support our girls received  on the day which they enjoyed and was well deserved.

U15/16: We played a challenge match last Friday evening v Dungourney  in preparation for our upcoming matches,  despite being   low on numbers  it was a well worth exercise with the girls putting in a great performance.

Ladies Football
We made it two wins out of two games in the East Cork Minor football league with a hard fought game against Watergrasshill last Tuesday evening in Midleton. We had only 13 girls available on the night and in fairness to WGH they matched our 13. This made the game a very open game of football and the referee on the night AJ Cronin allowed the game to flow and flow it did from one end to the other and both ways. A very entertaining sporting affair, we went in at the break one goal up, 1:4 to 0:4.
A few positional switches at half time resulted in us taking control of the game and put in a fantastic rear guard performance and made work very difficult for the WGH girls who just could not break down our defence. Unbelievable way ward shooting from our forwards was another talking point but in fairness they got it right in the last eight mins to put over three unanswered points and close out the game. A great sporting running game by two fantastic teams, final score Midleton 2:11 v Watergrasshill 1:7.

Well done to the Healthy Club Initiative within our Club who had a very successful afternoon at the club today. A special thanks to our Young players Ellen, Kate, Eva and Ciara who were on hand to help out.

Healthy Club
The Healthy Club Project currently in Phase 3 is a GAA initiative backed by Irish Life and Healthy Ireland. It is focused on improving the health of the nation by transforming GAA clubs into hubs for health. It capitalises on the key role played by GAA clubs in local communities and empowers clubs to deliver health and wellbeing information and programmes directly to their members and to the wider communities that they serve.

On Sunday afternoon we collaborated with St Finbarrs & Killeagh Healthy Clubs to showcase a little of what each club has achieved   Prior to the St Finbarrs and Killeagh Senior game children from each of the clubs took centre stage with their respective flags earned from engaging with partners in the community to promote a health message to our members.  Midleton had their RNLI Water Safety Flag, St Finbarr’s with their Pieta House Amber Flag and Killeagh with their Healthy Club Flag which recognises their success in achieving a completely Smoke Free GAA Grounds.  We were very fortunate to have Lord Mayor Mick Finn in attendance together with Tracy Kennedy Chairperson Cork County Board, our own John Fenton, and Charlie McCarthy from St Finbarr’s. The Healthy Club Showcase finished at half-time in the St Finbarrs and Killeagh game when the children from across the three clubs took part in Novelty Obstacle Course.
We would like to thank Hurley’s SuperValu who sponsored the fruit that was available to match attendees.  We would to also thank the GAA Executive Committee for their support with today’s showcase in particular Coleman Quirke who was a great help to the HCP Committee.  Special thanks to our wonderful young members Kate Saunderson, Ellen O’Neill, Ciara Murphy and Eva Saunderson who were flag bearers for today – well done girls! Gaa Golf Society
Our away outing will take place at Cork Golf on Tuesday 21st of August, tee time from 3.30-4.50pm, this event is limited to just 24 people and costs €50 including food, payment must be made in advance to any committee member.   

Lotto (An Lató)
Our Lotto Jackpot was €3,200 and there was no winner, the Lucky dip winners were Margaret Murphy, Fr Denis Kelleher, Adrian Hickey, Paul Spillane & Margaret/Majella, next week’s Jackpot will be €3,400.

Juvenile

Fe 6
Our youngest members of our GAA club braved the bad weather conditions on Saturday for our first football training session. Lots of fun and learning was had by all.
We will be doing another few week's of football and back with the Hurling in September.

Cul Camp
Last Friday 10th August at 2pm brought to a close our second Cul Camp for this summer.
It was a fantastic week with just under 200 girls and boys participating.  While not as warm as our first week in July we were again spoiled with fine weather and managed to escape with only one small rain shower during the week.
The young people themselves had a ball and were a credit to their clubs and families.
Its really encouraging to see so many young people interested in Gaelic games from the town and its immediate surrounds however on this occasion we also welcomed a few young people from as far away as Monaghan, Meath and Kerry who were holidaying in Midleton for the week visiting relations. 
One of the highlights of the camp is how committed our own Magpies are and this year again we received huge help from our players across the codes from 15 to Minor. Without their enthusiasm and assistance we would not be able to run such a large camp. We are very grateful to them for making themselves available. These young players are the future of our club and we hope that their involvement will encourage their interest in becoming the volunteers of the future that keep the club running smoothly and successfully.
Special thanks also to the camp coordinator Ingrid Connaughton, the Rebel Og coaches who facilitated the groups and our own Tommy O Connell and Amy Quirke. Thanks to Paudie O Brien, our Juvenile Chairperson for his assistance along with Shane Supple our regional GDA and Sean Crowley for his daily attention to detail.
Behind the scenes there’s a lot of work that needs to happen in order for camps like this to work. Many parents and officers of the club assisted with supervision during the week along with other necessary jobs to keep everything in order. Thanks to Mairead Beausang, Shelia Kelly, Ruth Walsh, Tracy Saunderson, Lisa Stewart, Tara Cahill, Mary Quinn & Marcella O Neill. Also thanks to our own coaches who loaned us their footballs and sliotars for the week, fingers crossed they got everything back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally no camp would be complete without a Cork star.  We are very grateful to Mark Coleman who visited us on Thursday morning; he chatted with the groups, signed hurleys and jerseys and answered many difficult questions.
