Midleton Hurling & Football, Ladies Football & Camogie Club NEWS

22 July, 2018

Planning Permission Granted for our New Development
We are very excited to announce that we have received Planning permission within the last week for our New Development at Park South, Youghal Rd.
This major development will greatly improve our playing facilities for our existing members and also allow us to cater for the future generations of hurlers, footballers and camogie players to come. A lot of work has been done behind the scenes for many years and we are now very excited to share our good news with our community.
Over the past 30 / 40 Years many attempts were made at acquiring land but unfortunately for various reasons they all fell through, we now have a site which is equi distant from the Town centre as our existing Clonmult Memorial Park site. In time this Community driven project will have a 1mile walkway loop facilitating the health and well-being of those within the wider community through all year round participation in physical activity.

Phase 1 of the development costing approx €750,000 will feature an entrance, car parking area and 3 pitches, one which will include Flood Lighting.
We expect to commence works late Aug / early Sept 2018.
The club purchased its current location at Clonmult Memorial Park in 1958. Our current facility, comprising of only one playing pitch, is widely recognised as one of the best facilities in the country. With the population of the greater Midleton area set to increase to over 20,000 in the next 10 years the need for extra land was paramount and was a major focus of the club’s membership. The club is grateful to the local schools for sharing their facilities as without this cooperation we could not function.
The launch of the club’s 5 year Development Plan 2015-2020 was another exciting chapter in the history of the Club. The fact that this is a now collaborative effort after we established our ONE CLUB between the Adult , Juvenile, Camogie & Ladies Football Club's makes this one of the most exciting and progressive events in the club’s history and bodes well for the future.
Finally congrats and well done to all those in the Facilities Committee who were behind the project led by Chairman Alan Donegan, Liam Ryan, Seamus Murphy, Vincent Reddy, Liam Wade, Gerald Fitzgerald, Sean Corcoran, Jim Cagney, Coleman Quirke and John Fenton who has been hugely active for years trying to reach this end goal.
Exciting times ahead .......................... Up the Mapies !

Junior A Football Championship
Pride of place goes to our footballers who gave a fantastic performance last Tuesday evening when they comprehensively defeated Carrigtwohill in the East Cork semi final in Lisgoold by 2-21 to 0-07. Right from the off there was only going to be one winner of this game as some very good interplay and point taking had us leading at the break by 0-11 to 0-05 (scoring all eleven points from play). We continued to dominate possession throughout the second half and goals from Cillian Hurley and Alywin Kearney along with a good spread of points finished the game long before the final whistle.
Well done to all the players and management on this fine victory which puts us into our first final since 1992 against Fr O’Neills, the date and venue have yet to be decided.

Seán Keohane History Donation
The club recently received a large volume of historical material from Mary and Micheál Keohane belonging to the late Seán Keohane. Seán was one of the most committed GAA members in the history of the club both as a player and in his many officership roles. He served the club with great distinction and pride at local and county level and always wore the Black and White colours on his sleeve. As well as being Chairman of the club’s Under Age and Senior sections he represented the club at the county board and was also elected Chairman of the County Minor Board. His collection of historical material goes right back to the founding of Cumann Luthchleas Gael Mainistir na Corann and details many of the historical events of the club, on and off the field, since its inception in 1885. The collection also includes records of club accounts back to the 1950’s and AGM’s from the 1980’s. Features on the squash club, Social club activities, under age activities, schools competitions are also included, in what is an invaluable addition to the club’s history portfolio. We would to thank Mary and Micheál and their family for this most generous donation and no doubt Seán would have been dancing a jig of joy when the news of the planning permission on the new development came through in the last week. Go raibh maith agaibh go léir.

Camogie (Camógaíochta)
U10:  We had two outing in the past week first we travelled to Glen Rovers on Tuesday evening to play the hosts. Both sides put in a great performance serving up a great game of camogie. Thanks to Glen Rovers for hosting.  On Saturday we hosted Eire Og in Ballinacurra once again the girls did themselves and our club proud with some excellent skills on display. Thanks to Eire Og for travelling and to Caoimhe Cronin for doing such a fine job as young Referee.

U13: We played our second group match against Killeagh in the Imokilly league last Thursday evening in Killeagh. It was a lovely evening for a match and the girls got off to a great start getting some scores very early in the first half.  The girls gave a solid performance throughout the match, defending well with midfield sending a lot of ball into the forwards who didn’t waste any chances.  We came away with our second win in this league securing a place in the semi final, date and opponent to be confirmed.

U14/ U15:  We enjoyed a friendly match with Fermoy on Tuesday evening last and play Bishopstown this coming week in preparation of the next round of the U14 league.  We play Cobh on Friday evening in the U15 league therefore there will be no training for this group this coming week.

Congratulations to Jill Connaughton earning herself a place on the U14 Cork Development squad she joins Chloe Garde and Caoimhe Murray proudly representing their club at county level.  Jill played for the first time in county colours on Saturday last when the girls travelled to Wexford for an Inter County Blitz with her team ‘Cork Blacks’ winning the cup on the day.  Well done to all three girls we are very proud of you all.

Fe 12
On Saturday we made the return trip to Clonea Power for the next stage of the Tommy Finn memorial tournament, it was an early start as throw in for our Quarter Final clash with Fourmilewater was timed for 10am.  The game started as it continued at one hundred miles an hour,  we got off the mark with two well taken points from Eoghan Fraser and Conor Morley before  the opposition goaled, despite this set back we continued to hurl well resulting in Conor Morley crashing an unstoppable shot to the back of the net, two pointed frees saw Fourmile draw level  before the half time whistle blew.  The second half continued at a ferocious pace with both sides fully committed.   A Daniel Garde pointed free was cancelled out by a similar score from our opponents, we edged ahead with two fine points from play from Eoghan Fraser and Conor Morley before a  long range free found its way to the back of the Midleton net, a  Daniel Garde pointed free put the sides level again at the  final whistle,  extra time of 5 mins a side was now required.  The first half of extra time saw Fourmilewater score a goal while  we failed to add to our tally,  in the second half of extra time Thomas  Dunlea who had to be in contention for player of the tournament scored a superb point,  Fouremile responded with another point before  Daniel Garde added  a point to  the board but this was to be the final score of the game,  despite a titanic effort Foumile got everyone behind the ball and defended resolutely  and held out for a two point victory and a place in the semi final  versus  Kilmacud Crokes of Dublin, the  score  line ended Fourmilewater 2.03 v Midleton 1.07. We were bitterly disappointed and aggrieved at some of the decisions during what was a pulsating match, nonetheless we wished our opponents well and our lads can be extremely proud of the way they played and behaved.  Captain on the day Yohanis Mehigan lifted the lads in the dressing room with an inspiring few words before we departed for home. We would like to thank Clonea Power for the invitation for their excellent hospitality.
