Senior Hurling
On Saturday evening last we had a comprehensive victory over Carrigtwohill away in the League by 2-20 to 1-13. We played against the wind in the first half and goals from Ross O’Regan and Patrick White saw us lead at the break by 2-10 to 0-10.
The second half looked like being a very close affair when they reduced the lead to two points early on but our defence battened down the hatches and we finished out the game with some great scores from distance.
Team: Byran Rossiter, Padraig O’Farrell, Alywin Kearney, Eoin Moloney, Padraig O’Keeffe, Cormac Walsh, Seamus O’Farrell, Paul Haughney, Cormac Beausang, Ross O’Regan, Sean O’Meara, Padraic Nagle, Luke O’Farrell, Jake Hegarty & Patrick White.
Subs used Kevin Finn & Ryan Mc Conville, unused Alan Power, Padraig O’Brien & Cormac O’Brien. Referee Pat O’Driscoll of Bride Rovers. Our next game in the League is Thursday 21st away to Bandon @ 8pm.

Intermediate Hurling
Following on from a recent win over Kilbrittan away in the League we hosted Mayfield last Tuesday. On a perfect evening we were served up with a free flowing enjoyable game and at the break we led by the minimum 3-05 to 1-10. The second half saw the lead change several times and it took a late long range free to give them a share of the spoils, final score Midleton 5-14 v Mayfield 3-20.
Team: Byran Rossiter, Cathal Gunning, Billy O’ Shea, Ryan Mc Conville, Damien Daly, Eoin Moloney, Padraig O’Keeffe, Kieran Mulcahy, Shane Ryan (1-00), Niall Walsh, Jake Hegarty (1-05), Conor O’Neill (1-00), Ross O’Regan (1-04, 3 frees), Peter Dowling & Mark O’Keeffe. Subs used Kevin Finn (1-04), Cormac O’Brien & Adam Daly (0-01). Referee Pat O’Driscoll of Bride Rovers

Junior Hurling
In our fourth game of the league we travelled to Carrigtwohill to take on our near neighbours. In what was an excellent first half display we had a very healthy lead at half time. On the changeover we made several substitutions, despite these changes and losing a player to a red card early in the second half we held on resolutely for a great victory. This was another excellent performance from the junior players. Well done to Evan Rowlands who acquitted himself very well on his debut for the juniors.
Final Score: Midleton 3-14 v Carrigtwohill 2-14
Team: Alan Power, Brendan Ferriter, Gavin Bagnall Harnett, Jerome Curtin, Conor Evans, Henry Foster, Pat Stack, Cormac O'Brien, Josh Deady, Niall Walsh, Micheal Keohane, Conor O’Neill, Joe Loftus, Sean Corcoran, Mark O’Keeffe. Substitutes used: John Keane, Andrew Rea, Luke Finnerty, Eoghan Collins and Evan Rowlands. Final Score: Carrigtwohill 2-14 v Midleton 3-14.

Munster Hurling Championship
Last Sunday afternoon in round four of the Round robin Senior Championship and before a crowd of 15,000 Cork defeated Waterford by 1-23 to 1-20. Conor Lehane began at full forward and scored 0-03. The vital score for Cork was a goal from Seamus Harnedy with four minutes of normal time left and then in the seven additional minutes of injury time they managed to add four further points. Cork however will need a big improvement from this performance, they had seventeen wides and basic defensive errors cost them at least six points. They will now face Clare in the Munster Final on the 1st of July @ 2pm, the venue at the time of writing has not been confirmed.
In the curtain raiser the Cork minors had an emphatic win over a fancied Waterford side by 3-17 to 2-05. Unfortunately as the result between Clare and Limerick didn’t go their way the year has come to an end. Christian Murphy and Aaron Mulcahy were both unused substitute’s and Donal Burke was a selector.

In the Connaught Football final there was success for Galway over Roscommon, you might ask what has this to do with Midleton? Well the captain of the team Annaghdown’s Damien Comer is a brother of our current Junior Football player and captain Johnny!

Our youngest members of our club contested their first ever Hurling match on Saturday at home against their neighbours Kiltha Og. We had three teams taking part and each team played with great skill and effort. It was great to see the enthusiasm and team spirit from our young Magpies. Thanks to all the coaches and parents that helped out on Saturday.

Fe 7
On Saturday morning last we travelled to Pairc Ui Chaoimh to play our first Hurling blitz of the year on the new Astro turf venue. A total of 35 enthusiastic and excited young magpies made the journey to play Valley Rovers, Bishopstown, Carrigtwohill and Inniscarra. There was great team work, commitment and effort on display throughout the hour and no shortage of skills. A great morning was had by all the players, coaches and parents and we look forward to our next outing over the coming weeks.

Fe 10
We travelled west last Saturday morning to play Kinsale in the latest round of the Rebel Óg Hurling league. A total of 29 boys made the trip and played across three teams. In breezy but dry conditions, all teams played exceptionally well with some fine scoring, work rate and team play throughout. Well done to all involved and keep up the practice. Thanks to all the parents and coaches who were able to make the trip – much appreciated.

On Saturday morning last we travelled to Pairc Uí Rinn for the John Kerins Football tournament 1/4 Final. We qualified a number of weeks ago by defeating Erins Own and Castlehaven. At the draw a week later we were drawn against the most successful club in Cork, Nemo Rangers. The boys were clearly nervous during the warm up, but once the game got underway all that disappeared. From the throw in, we took the game to Nemo. Playing some sublime football at times we raced into a 3pts to 1pt lead which was well deserved. Unfortunately during this period of dominance we lost 2 of our midfielders through injury . This seem to unsettled the team and with the half time whistle approaching we conceded a goal. This left us 0 - 3 to 1 - 01 down after playing all the football. Nemo made four changes to their team at halftime, which was testament to the brilliant football that we were playing. Two quick goals at the start of the second half rocked us, which we never recovered. The team tried to the bitter end but it was not to be, and we were defeated 4 -03 to 0 - 3. This was a great day for this committed bunch and I’ve no doubt they will be back in Páirc Uí Rinn soon !!!! Although disappointed the lads really enjoyed the experience. I would like to thank An Garda Síochána for this tremendous opportunity and I hope that Midleton will honour this invite for years to come. Well done again to all. The Street Leagues Finals take place this Saturday details midweek. Then on Sunday we travel to Ballygunner for a Fé 11 challenge match, details TBC.

Fe 12
It was busy week having travelled to Eire Óg for the football on Saturday we were again on the road Sunday with a trip to Carrigaline for the C3 hurling league,  some late withdrawals from our panel didn’t deter us but on a very bumpy and tight pitch we struggled initially with Carrigaline having the upper hand scoring two points early on before Ben Fitzpatrick cracked a shot to the net for us.  Carrigaline responded with two more points before finding the back of our net despite some heroic defending form Paddy Walsh in particular who went on the have an excellent game.  Jack Foley added two points one from free one from play and Fionn Kelly and Matthew Gregory  added to the tally with two further points from play, Callum O’ Brien was rewarded for some strong play a with an excellent point to leave the  half time score Midleton 1.05 v Carrigaline 2.05.  The second half was a ding dong battle with scores difficult to come by, they added another point, this proved to be the final score for the opposition but we still found it difficult to break down their defence.  Callum O Brien got on the score sheet again this time with a goal,  as the clock ticked down it looked like we were going home empty handed , we were awarded a late free close in which Jack Foley dispatched to the back of the net  to see us win out on a score line of Midleton 3.05 v Carrigaline 2.06.

Monday were hosted St Catherine’s in the P1 Hurling League, short some key players for different reasons we nonetheless put our shoulder to the wheel.  They got off the mark with a pointed 65, we responded with a Daniel Garde point from play, St Catherine’s then rocked us with a goal before Daniel Garde responded with two points one from play one from free and a Thomas Dunlea point brought us level,  the Saints  responded with a point to leave the half time score line Midleton 0.04 St Catherine’s 1.02.  We opened the second half scoring with a point from Adam O’Connor who had a fine match throughout, the Saints snatched another goal  followed by two points to leave us chasing the game, Daniel Garde added two more points to his personal tally but we couldn’t find the all important goal to draw level. The saints defended heroically y to deny us several late chances leaving the final score Midleton 0.07 v St Catherine’s 2.04.  We were bitterly disappointed at the final whistle but every
player gave their all in what was an absorbing game of hurling.

The end of a busy playing week concluded with us facing Sars in the  C3 Hurling League in Clonmult Park on Saturday.  It proved to be a very entertaining match, it ebbed and flowed for both teams. In the first 10 minutes it was obvious that both teams were evenly matched with some great passages of play but no scores.  Sars where first off the mark with two pointed   frees, despite having plenty of opportunity we struggled to  get on the score board,  they  scored another point from play and followed this with a goal,  on the stroke of half time we finally got off the mark with an Eoghan Fraser 65. Having played with the wind in the first half this was a worrying half time score line.  Sars started the second half with intent getting two early points before a Jack Foley goal threw us a life line, strong play from James Mc Sweeney resulted in Jack swinging over another excellent point  this gave the team a great lift and all over the field from Sennan Gleeson in the full back line, the half back line of Callum Mc Sweeney Eoghan Fraser and Odhran Dennigan began to dominate, Fionn Kelly and James Mc were edging the midfield battle,  Jack score another goal, James added another point from play but Sars weren’t done they found the back of the net again to edge them ahead  as we headed into the final stages  but Fionn Kelly now operating in the half forward line swung over a point from play to level the match  which was just rewards for a fine performance throughout, the last few minutes  were frantic with both teams desperately trying to get the upper hand,  the final chance fell to us but  a difficult free drifted wide and the ref blew the final whistle.  A draw was probably a fair result in what was a keenly contested game by both sides.  Gearoid Cashman and Captain Matthew Gregory also had fine performances with Darragh Egan also putting in a huge shift. Final score Midleton 2.04 v Sars 2.04.

Davy Hogan Street Leagues
Round 2 of our Davy Hogan Street leagues took place on Monday night last the 11th of June. All six teams and their coaches arrived to the pitch for a 6.15pm start and following on from the format of the first round all teams played two matches. The position after Round 1 had St. Enda’s on 4 points, Garryowen on 4 points, Saints on 3 Points, Forkums on 1 point and Sons of Rest and Owenacurra yet to register their first tournament points.  Once again great credit needs to go to all these young magpies.  There was great skill, determination and commitment on show throughout all six games.  Many of the matches on the night were very tightly contested.  Congratulations to all the players involved and thanks to our young whistler referees, Dan Cagney, Ryan Cahill and Brion Saunderson who did a great job refereeing the matches on the night.  Positions after Round 2 are as follows; St. Enda’s on 8 points,
Owenacurra on 1 point, Garryowen on 4 points, Sons of Rest on 4 points, Saints on 4 Points and Forkums on 3 points.  As it currently stands St. Enda’s have already achieved 8 tournament points and can’t be caught by another team so they have qualified for this years final.  It provides for a very exciting finals day as it will all come down to the 5th and final league match to see who will meet St. Enda’s in this years 2018 Davy Hogan Street League Final.  Finals day will take place on Saturday the 23rd of June.  All players are to meet and assemble in Market Green shopping centre for the players parade.  Players will march behind a piper through the shopping centre and over to the club.   Managers will issue texts to parents during the week confirming a meeting time.  Assembly will be at the Sam McCauley entrance side of Market Green. The parade is set to depart at 9.30am.  The 5th league matches will start at 10.15 sharp and will be 12 minutes a side with 5 minutes for half time.  Pitch 1 will feature St. Enda’s v Sons of Rest, Pitch 2 Owenacurra v Forkums and Pitch 3 Garryowen v Saints.  The final is set to take place at 11am, it will be 20 minutes a side and will be refereed by Pa Beausang.  Following the final all players, parents and coaches are invited into the Club Lounge for presentation of the Davy Hogan Cup and Medals to the winning team.  This event is one of the highlights of the Juvenile Calendar and we would encourage all members of our club to please come out and support these young magpies.

Save the date July 7th - New York Visiting Team
On July 7th Midleton GAA Club will host the inaugural Paddy Dunlea Tournament on the main pitch from 12.30pm to 6.30pm.  The Juvenile Committee was contacted a number of weeks ago by a New York GAA Club, St Brendan’s in Orange County New York.  New York GAA were looking to arrange a visit to Ireland in July for a combined Fe14 New York Selection team and wanted to arrange a visit to Midleton GAA Club as part of their tour.  There are 25 players, 6 coaches and a number of supporting family members in the travelling party. Midleton GAA Club last hosted a visiting New York Team in 2011 and it is often spoken about and fondly remembered by all involved with that visit.  We look forward with great anticipation to creating new memories and providing a great day’s tournament of hurling for all our members to come and enjoy.  The tournament line up will see Midleton, New York, Abbeyside from Waterford and Knockavilla Kichams from Tipperary compete to win the Cup and Shield. What makes this tournament extra special for our club is that the Cup and Shield for this tournament will be engraved in Paddy Dunlea’s name.  Paddy was a lifelong passionate member of our club where he carried out numerous roles over the years.  This is a fitting tribute to him and his dedication to our club.  This tournament together with the Cup and Shield will become an annual Fe15’s tournament within our Juvenile Calendar in honour of Paddy Dunlea.  It is not every year that we host a visiting New York Team.  It will be a very special day for our Club and we encourage all our members across all our clubs to save the date of July 7th and come to the club to view the tournament and enjoy what we know will be a wonderful social afternoon with many competitive hurling matches on show.
