Junior Football Championship
Last Thursday evening we took on Aghada in the first round of the Championship in Castlemartyr and came out victorious by 2-13 to 2-07.
We led deservedly at the break by 1-05 to 0-03 with a well taken penalty by Johnny Comer putting us in control. On the re start a number of quick points looked to have set us up for comfortable win but to their credit they came right back into the game and with less than ten minutes to go there was only two points between us. However with our backs now to the wall an excellent move out of our defence resulted in substitute Garan Manley finishing the ball to the back of the net and even though they scored a late penalty the final result was never really in doubt. Well done to the players and management on this fine win.
Team: Patrick White, Adam Daly, Luke Dineen, Cathal Gunning, Seamus O’Farrell, Peter Dowling, Niall Walsh, Luke O’Farrell, Eoin Moloney, Cormac Beausang (0-02), Sean O’Meara, Cormac Walsh (0-02), Johnny Comer (1-04, 1-00 penalty), Cillian Hurley (0-03) & Kieran Mulcahy (0-02). Sub used Garan Manley (1-00), unused Keith Ryan, Brendan Ferriter, Shane Ryan & Eoin Ferriter. Referee was Ger Scully of Killeagh.

Fe 21 Football Championship
We played Ballygarvan last Saturday evening in the County quarter final in Pairc Ui Rinn and came away with a fine win on a scoreline of 4-12 to 2-08.
Played in ideal conditions first half goals from Cormac Beausang & Sean O’Leary Hayes set us on our way and we led at the break by 2-05 to 0-05. A blistering start to the second half saw us take a commanding lead with two fine goals from Eoin Moloney and Luke Finnerty. Even though they fought back with two late goals of their own, some well taken points from Cormac and Sean sealed the victory for us.
Well done to the players and management on this fine win, we now await our opponents in the County semi final.
Team: Arthur Nganou, Cormac O’Brien, Eoin Mitchell, Mark Daly, Adam Daly, Seanaidh Smyth, Kevin Finn, Sean O’Meara, Eoin Moloney (1-00), Cathal Gunning, Sean O’Leary Hayes (1-03), Shane Finn (0-01), Padraig O’Brien (0-01), Cormac Beausang capt. (1-07, 1 free & 45) & Tommy O’Connell. Subs used Luke Finnerty (1-00), Garan Manley, Alan Power, Kevin Daly & Griffin Hurley.

Munster Senior & Minor Hurling Championship
Last Sunday afternoon Cork defeated Clare in round one of the Senior Hurling Championship in Pairc Ui Chaoimh by 2-23 to 1-21 before a crowd of almost 25,000.
Conor Lehane played at centre forward and scored 1-02. The game was held up for over ten minutes in the second half due to a serious injury to Robbie O’Flynn, we wish him well.
The minors eventually overcame Clare also in their first round by 0-26 to 3-13 with a late finish, Christian Murphy played at right corner back and Aaron Mulcahy was an unused sub.
Both teams now travel to Thurles next Sunday to take on Tipperary in round two.

All Ireland Minor Hurling Championship 1928 – 2018
This year marks the 90th year of the All Ireland Minor Hurling Championship and the selection of Christian Murphy and Aaron Mulcahy on the Cork panel represents another milestone for our club in this competition.
Christian and Aaron’s selection takes the number of Midleton players to wear the Cork minor jersey in competitive action (including substitutes) to over 100. The players may not always have been from Midleton (like Christy Ring in 1938) but would have played with the club under the St. Enda’s banner when we combined with other teams.
The list also contains players from the Cork under 17 team of 2017 (inaugural winners of the competition, history repeating itself) and 2018.
In another link to the past, Aaron Mulcahy’s great grandfather was Michael ‘Famous’ Mulcahy who was a prominent member of the Midleton team that won the County minor title in 1927. Aaron’s father Barry was an accomplished footballer and played soccer for Cobh Ramblers and Midleton, his uncle the great Denis Mulcahy, was a corner stone at corner back for the Midleton and Cork teams of the 1980’s and an Allstar award winner in 1986.
He was also rated as being their toughest opponent by none other than Jimmy Barry Murphy and Nicky English, two of the greatest forwards in hurling’s history.
Christian’s father Niall played juvenile hurling with Glen Rovers and was a fine centre for many years on the Sundays Well and Midleton Rugby teams, his mother Ber was an accomplished Basketballer and Camogie player.

The inaugural All Ireland minor competition was played in 1928 and as we won the Cork County minor championship in 1927 the club were awarded the captaincy of the Cork team, a tradition that pertained across all Cork teams for many decades up to recent times when the practice changed. The 1928 Cork team consisted of five Midleton players Michael John Moloney (goalie), defenders Jimmy Glavin and Frank Cronin and forwards Larry Horgan and Christy Duggan. The team captained by Larry Horgan defeated Dublin in the final after a replay thus ensuring Larry’s place in GAA history.

Over the ninety years Midleton produced the following Captains of the Cork minor team, Larry Horgan 1928 (All Ireland winners), Teddy Barry 1939 (All Ireland winners), Billy Ramsell 1950 (whose uncle Jimmy Ramsell was one of the greats of Midleton and Cork teams of the 1914-1917 era, Michael O’ Mahony 1985 (All Ireland winners), Padraig O’Brien 1988 (All Ireland runners up), Timmy Dineen 1989 and Peter Smith & Muiris Quirke shared duties in 1990 (All Ireland runners up after a replay).
Another great year for the club at this level was 1995 when four Midleton players, Pat Walsh, Michael O’Connell, Darragh Cott and Pat Mullaney were all on the team that won the All Ireland title. Some of this four were also on the team the previous year, along with Alan Cahill when they were beaten in the All Ireland final.

Fittingly we provided the captain in 2017 when Sean O’ Leary Hayes captained the team beaten by Galway in the All Ireland Minor final. This represented the last year of the competition at under 18 level. Tommy O’ Connell played on the Cork minor team in the first under 17 All Ireland final in 2017, the first winning Cork team of an All-Ireland title at this age. Kian Farmer, Kevin Finn and Sean O’ Sullivan also featured on that team during the year and Donal Burke was a selector. For the record (which may not be conclusive) the club has had eight players who played Minor football with Cork, the last being Paul Moynihan in 1993. (Many thanks to John Fenton for this article).

Healthy Club
Drowning Prevention Advice to GAA Clubs from the RNLI:
Many of you will be familiar with the GAA’s Healthy Club project which aims to transform GAA clubs into health-enhancing hubs for their communities. A major part of the success of this project has been working with partner organisations in specialist areas, dealing with a range of social issues affecting community’s right across Ireland.
One of these partner organisations is the RNLI, an organisation that operates a volunteer-led lifeboat search and rescue service in Ireland and Britain, at sea and on inland waters and who save lives through action and their drowning prevention work.  The charity’s ‘Respect the Water’ programme gives life-saving advice and information to people who never thought they would be at risk of drowning, in a way they can relate to and that is easy to understand and pass on to others. Every year people are losing their lives to drowning and the GAA community has not been left untouched by this.
So what is happening? The RNLI would like to deliver safety talks to minor and senior teams at GAA clubs in their local communities so they can understand the risks of drowning and how simple action can save lives. Why are the RNLI specifically targeting male minor and senior teams?
Current drowning figures show a clear gender divide, with men accounting for over two-thirds of those who lose their lives through drowning. The campaign is primarily aimed at men, particularly those aged between 16 and 39 years, who are more likely to take risks. However, the safety advice is relevant for anyone and the RNLI Ambassadors are willing to speak to members of all ages, both male and female.
Will it need much support or time? Not at all. The RNLI’s team of volunteers are specially trained and are GAA supporters themselves. They attended Croke Park to receive their training and have short presentations (approximately half an hour) that they can deliver locally. All they need is a contact person and a time that suits and they will do the rest.
What can you do to help? If you are near the coast or an RNLI lifeboat station then you may get a call from one of the RNLI volunteers offering a talk and you will know what to expect. If you would like to get a visit arranged you can contact the RNLI directly at their Irish Head Office and speak to Susan on Tel: 01-8900 460 or email Susan_Carthy@rnli.org.uk
Again, we know there are a lot of asks on clubs and the Healthy Club project deals with many important issues. The RNLI has worked with the GAA to make this programme relevant to young people who lead busy and active lives. These are the people we need to reach with this message and ultimately a short presentation could save a life at your club.

This was an extremely busy weekend for the boys. On Saturday we played Kinsale at home in the hurling league, with 32 boys across three teams. Well done to all the lads who played some great stuff throughout. Thanks also to Charlie, Conor & Alex who referred very well. Then on Sunday we welcomed Sixmilebridge to Clonmult for a inter county challenge match. We had 35 magpies playing with some fantastic hurling on display. Thanks to Sixmilebridge for traveling and for three very sporting matches. Thanks to all parents who provided much needed refreshments (for players & coaches) after the match and to all who helped out. It was a very enjoyable morning for all involved. We then made the short bus trip to Páirc Ui Chaoimh with 34 eager & very vocal Cork supporters to shout on their Rebel hero’s. Thanks to all the coaches who helped out.

They say football is dead and buried in Cork but last Monday night served up one of the most entertaining games of football that brought hope and a bit of light at the end of the tunnel for those who still dare to dream that football will once again rise in the Rebel county. The Magpies were away to local rivals Carrigtwohill and it was the home side who came out of the traps firing on all cylinders. They quickly went into the lead scoring three goals but we  never dropped our heads and a goal from Zach Smith followed by points from Cian Lambe, Rory Lester and two from Niall Lang saw the us trailing at halftime on a score line of 5-01 to 1-04. A strong team talk at halftime and with the help of a sloping pitch we got scores from Tadgh Bohane, Zach Smith, Cormac Ryan and Evan Mc Grath brought us back to level terms it was point for point all the way to the end. The game finished level at 6-09 a piece. It was another fantastic display by this group of youths, special mention must go to Alex Moloney and Niall Lang for a tremendous work rate done on the night. The game summed up the never give up attitude of these young men and it certainly didn’t lack entertainment. Thanks to all parents and supporters for their help on the night. Panel: Adam Collins, Sean Cronin, Darragh Scanlon, Darragh Aherne, Rory Lester, Alex Moloney, Eoin Higgins, Niall Lang, Zach Smith, Darragh Fitzgerald, Tadgh O Leary Hayes, Evan Mc Grath, Conor Williams, Tadhg Bohane, Cian Lambe, Oisin Berdassa, Cormac Ryan & Oscar Brennan.

On Friday evening last we travelled to Carrigaline for a C3 game. We started well with the forwards taking some fine scores Oscar Brennan and Tiernan O Connell were in particular good form. Points from Eoin Higgins Tadhg Bohane and Darragh Fitzgerald sent us in at half time leading 8 points to 1-2. Carrigaline got a goal at the start of the second half and put the pressure on but we held our ground and when Darragh Fitzgerald got a goal it gave us some breathing space leaving the final score line of Midleton 1-12 v Carrigaline 2-06. A special mention to Zach Smith for some fine goal keeping skills. The mentors would like to thank all parents for their support on the night. Panel as follows Zach Smith, Sean Cronin, Adam Collins, Darragh Higgins, Eoin Higgins, Rory Lester, Evan Mc Grath, Tadhg Bohane, Darragh Fitzgerald, Larry Ward, Oscar Brennan, Cormac Ryan, Samuel Morrissey Paul Connolly, Andrew Burke & Tiernan O Connell.

This week we played two Football league games. One at home against Glanmire and the second was a rearranged fixture away against Carrigaline.
First up was the game against Glanmire on Wednesday evening. The conditions were perfect, sunny, calm and dry. Glanmire would be considered one the stronger teams in the league, so this was going to be a tough game. We got off to a great start and challenged for every ball. The lads were winning a lot of possession and moving the ball into scoring opportunities. Our first two points came from Tiernan Roche, the second point coming from a well worked move from defence to the  forward line with some lovely hand passing. Our third point was scored by Kamil Noack. This put us into a three-point lead with twenty minutes gone. At this stage Glanmire started to get into the game and they put two goals and three points on the scoreboard. We responded well to this set back and put two more points on the score board through Mikey Finn and TJ Murphy. This left the half time score Midleton 0:05 v Glanmire 2:03. The second half was a different story and Glanmire showed their full potential. We put in the effort in the second half but we could not find the same level as we had in the first half. Our opponents took their point opportunities very well and out scored us by two goals and seven points to leave the final score Midleton 0:05 v Glanmire 4:10

Our second game of the week was on Saturday afternoon away to Carrigaline. Again, the conditions were perfect. We started this game with much more intensity than our previous game. That was the benefit of playing two football games in quick succession, it makes it a lot easier for the lads to get into the pace of the game from the start. From our defence right up to the forward line each player put in a fantastic display as they battled for every ball and supported each other, always looking to have a man to pass the ball to and help move the ball up the field and into scoring positions. In the first half both teams exchanged scores early on. We scored points through Tiernan Roche, David Noack and Mikey Finn. We conceded an unlucky goal when a high ball dropped into the square and ended up in the back of the net. This meant that we were trailing by four points at half time. The second half started with the same intensity and we pushed on creating plenty of scoring chances, with points from Cathal Beausang, Mikey Finn and Tiernan Roche. But in our effort to push forward looking for scores we were caught out at the back with two goals on the break. Late on in the second half we conceded a penalty, but this was brilliantly saved by Brian O’Connell. The intensity never dropped throughout the entire game and we pushed forward trying to score the goals that would have pulled us back into the game. Through a combination of excellent defending, goalkeeping and hitting the post we tried but the goals never came. The results may not have gone our way but with the attitude and commitment of all the players was excellent and they can be proud of the effort that they showed.
Our next game is a hurling game at home to Ballygarvan on Wednesday 23rd May.
Our panel for the games were, Mikey Finn, Ben Kenneally, Tiernan Roche, Rian De Barra, Michael Roe, Odhran Prenter, Brian O’Connell, Fionn Dalton, Cathal Beausang, Dara Scanlon, Alex Moloney, Niall Lang, Tadgh O’Leary Hayes, Darragh Fitzgerald, Evan McGrath, Kamil & David Noack.

Davy Hogan Street Leagues 2018
Our annual Davy Hogan Street Leagues are set to commence on Wednesday the 30th of May at 7.00pm on the main pitch.  The Davy Hogan Street leagues are one of the annual highlights of the Juvenile Calendar. Over the past number of years we have run into issues in September with the weather, this year we decided to run the tournament earlier.  As we all know there are no guarantees with the Irish weather but hopefully we won’t experience any weather disruptions to the tournament schedule!  The tournament is for our Fe10, Fe11 Players and those who qualify on the age from our Fe12 players.  This year we have 88 players who are eligible to take part.  Two tournament co-ordinators were sought by the Juvenile Committee to oversee the tournament, Ed Coughlan (Fe11) and Tom Casey (Fe10)  have very kindly agreed to oversee the tournament. A draw for the teams took place in the presence of the Fe10 & F11 Team Managers and Tournament Co-ordinators.  There are six teams in total.  All players and coaches have been assigned to their various teams.  Each team will play five league matches with results kept and updated after each round.  The first round of matches is set to take place on Wednesday the 30th of May @ 7pm.  The second round of matches is set to take place on Monday the 11th of June @ 7pm.  All players are involved on Finals Day which is arranged for Saturday the 23rd of June.  Players will meet and assemble that morning in Market Green and parade behind a piper to the main pitch.  The 5th leagues matches are due to be run off at 10.30am where the top two teams will progress to the final which is to be played at 11.30am.
A dedicated page has been created on the club website.  This page outlines all details of the tournament rules, dates, teams, mentors and tournament dates.  As the matches are played the scores will be updated that evening to the website.  The page can be found on the Juvenile Section on the main club website.  We wish all our juvenile players an enjoyable tournament.
