Intermediate Hurling
We had a good win over our hosts Barryroe in the League last Friday evening, this was a good workout for our up and coming Championship game.
Final score Barryroe 2-14 v Midleton 4-13.
Team: Byran Rossiter, Cathal Gunning, Adam Daly, Billy O’Shea, Kieran Mulcahy, Shane Ryan, Ryan Mc Conville, Mark O’Keeffe, Padraig O’Brien, Garan Manley, Ian Kennefick, Jake Hegarty, Michael Abernethy, Peter Dowling & Ross O’Regan. Subs used Eoghan Walsh & Niall Walsh. Best of luck to our players and management in their Championship first round game next Saturday evening v Blackrock in Pairc Ui Rinn @ 7.45pm.

Fe 21
Congratulations to our footballers who had a magnificent win over St Colmans in the East Cork B Final on Wednesday last. The game which was originally fixed for Ballinacurra was changed to Midleton just a few hours before kick-off. They started the game on the front foot and quickly went into a three point lead, to add to our woes we lost Sean O’Leary Hayes to injury after only a few minutes. This seemed to inspire us on, we seriously upped our game and some great team play led to two great goals from Harry Wall and Kian Farmer.
Cormac Beausang then kicked some great points from play and frees leaving the halftime score at 2-06 to 0-09 in our favour.
The second half right from the off was all one way traffic with our defence well on top and driving forward at every opportunity to combine with our midfielders and forwards.
Well taken goals from Cormac and Sean O’Meara really put the icing on the cake and with our defence only conceding two points we ran out convincing winners by 5-16 to 0-11.
Chairman of the East Cork Board Donal O’Keeffe presented the Cup to our inspirational captain Cormac Beausang.
Team: Arthur Nganou, Conor Evans, Eoin Mitchell, Cormac O’ Brien, Seanaidh Smyth, Adam Daly, Kevin Finn (0-01), Sean O’Meara (1-00), Eoin Moloney (0-01), Cathal Gunning (0-02), Cormac Beausang (2-09, 4 frees), Kian Farmer (1-00), Harry Wall (1-01), Sean O’Leary Hayes & Padraig O’Brien (0-01).
Subs used Mark Daly, Tommy O’Connell (0-01), Eoin Collins & Alan Power.
Well done to all the players and management and best of luck going forward when we play the Carrigdhoun winners on Saturday 19th May in Mayfield @ 5.30pm.

Ladies Football (Peil na mBan)
There will be No training this Bank holiday Monday, training resumes Monday week at the Tech pitch from 6-8pm for all age groups.
Our numbers for our Under 8 team have increase dramatically and we need help in coaching the girls. If you can help out on a Monday at training from 6-7pm please come along. On Wednesday last our U12 girls continued their winning streak with a great win over Cloyne. Many thanks to the parents for once again bringing the girls along. We had great numbers on the night. All the girls got equal amount of game time and it’s great to see them showing such enthusiasm.

Camogie (Camógaíochta)
U14: We travelled to Buttevant last Sunday evening to play the 3rd round of the U14 league. It was a good evening for a match and the girls started off strong scoring a goal in the early stages. A few decisions which didn’t go our way led to Buttevant putting some scores on the board from frees but we kept our lead scoring a second goal and the first half ended on a scoreline of Midleton 2-00 v Buttevant 0-03.  Both teams went out strong in the second half and the ball went from goal to goal with both sides battling hard. This was always going to be tough match as both teams were involved in the U14 league final last year.   Another goal put us further ahead but shortly after Buttevant responded with their first goal of the match. With only 15 girls available on the night and 1 or 2 picking up injuries the girls worked as a team and put up a strong defence. Our forwards had a few chances but couldn’t add to the scoreboard until a few minutes from the final whistle  when we scored our 4th goal which resulted in a win on a score line of Midleton 4-00 v Buttevant 1-03. This win has secured a place in the County league quarter final for this U14 team who have now won 3 out of 3 matches in their league campaign so far. The girls have put in some great team performances and deserve their place in the quarter final. Next outing for this team is the 1st round of U14 championship v Ballinascarthy which is scheduled for the end of the month.

U16: We travelled to Cloughduv last Thursday evening for the second round of league in what were ideal conditions for camogie. From the outset it was clear that we were in for a very physical contest. But our girls stepped up putting in a fine performance from start to finish. The position got two early goals  but our  girls played with skill and determination and great points from Leah Hogan and Clara McCarthy brought us back into the game then the goals came from Chloe Garde, Grace Moloney and Abbie Foley. The second half was a real see-saw affair with both teams holding the lead at different stages but it was Midleton who came out on top at the final whistle. Overall it was a brilliant panel effort from start to finish with some exceptional performances from Jodie Keegan O Connell, Vivienne Gleeson and Leah Hogan. Final score Midleton 3-08 v Cloughduv 4-03.

Fe 10
On Saturday morning the sun shone for the Magpies who welcomed Nemo Rangers to
Midleton for the latest round of the football league match. Superb football skills were on display in the three matches with great passing and kicking to be seen. Well done to all the lads who continue to improve every week in football and hurling. Thanks to Nemo for three
sporting games and to the three young whistlers Charlie, Dan and Conor who did a great job refereeing the games.

Fe 11
Our hurlers were on the road again on Saturday last. This time we made the journey to
Ballincollig for what was our first hurling match of the year. We had 36 young Magpies take to the field for three matches of 11 a side. The lads again gave the their all in the three games but the fact it was our first hurling match they, were a little bit off the pace. Hopefully now we will have the bad weather over us , the hurling will improve.
We are out again on Wednesday evening at home to Douglas in hurling, well done again to this very committed bunch of players.

Fe 12
Last Wednesday evening Bishopstown was the venue for out latest Fe 12 Hurling league match, the pitch was in great condition on a dry crisp evening.  We started brightly with a stiff breeze at out back.  The mid field partnership of Eoghan Fraser and James Mc Sweeney were on top form providing plenty of ammunition for the forwards. An early point from Eoghan Fraser was quickly followed by a goal from the impressive Sean Mc Sharry (captain)  shortly thereafter a Shane McNamara  goal followed by a goal and a point from a very sharp Callum O’Brien  put us in a very strong position before Shane McNamara pounced to claim his second goal. Bishopstown got on the score board with a pointed free to leave us in a strong position at half time.  The score line may suggest we had it all our own way but that was not the case, they had several attempts on goal but our goalie Odhran Rabbitte was in inspired form.  Yohanis Mehigan, John Paul McManus and Fionn Kelly were also having fine games in our defence.  Bishopstown with the wind started  the second half strongly beginning with  a pointed free,  we responded with  another goal from Eoghan Fraser, then  followed a  period of intense pressure on our defence and despite
Odhran’s best effort the town struck for two goals at this stage our defence were performing heroically and Jack Foley now in mid field was getting on a lot of ball  but incessant
Bishopstown pressure yielded another goal and some excellent point taking but captain
fantastic Sean Mc Sharry set up Shane McNamara for his hat trick which eased the pressure and we held out for a win on a score line of  6.02 to 3.06.

On Friday evening we were at home this time with the big ball v Kilara Óg in the Premier 2 football league. It was a beautiful evening for a football match with little wind and dry conditions. Results had suggested that Kilara Og were a fine football side and this proved correct! They had us under pressure from the very start with their slick play and teamwork, they tagged on five points while we struggled to get to grips with their play, with a pointed free from Cathraigh Cronin and  a point from play from Peter Barrett we finished the first half  0.05 to 0.02.  The second half began with the hard working Paddy Walsh at centre forward and Cathraigh Cronin and Daniel Garde upping their game in the middle of the field, points from Callum O’ Brien and Peter Barrett who was giving a man of the match performance from wing back settled us but Kilara continued their economic use of the ball in front of the goal ensuring that they kept ahead of us on the score board. Matthew Gregory and Odhran Dennigan put in impressive performances keeping us in the game, with five mins remaining the scoreline read Kilara ten points to four points.  After some fantastic team play a long foot pass from Jack Foley found Sean McSharry and there was only going to be one outcome as Sean blasted the football to the back of the net despite the very impressive efforts of the Kilara goal keeper. After repelling another Kilara attack Peter Barrett burst forward to score our second goal levelling the match.  At this stage we would gladly have accepted a draw but the impressive Jack Foley latched onto a breaking ball and curled a left footed score over the bar for what proved to be the winning score.  It finished Midleton 2.05 v Kilara Og 0.10.

Fe 14
On Saturday 5th May we travelled to Glanmire for the group stage of the 2018 Football Feile. The conditions were excellent; it was great to have such dry and sunny conditions for these games. We were in a group, with Glanmire, Mallow, Na Piarsaigh and Cobh. This time around the winners of the group would qualify straight for the semi-final stage. Each game would be 12 minutes a side, which meant that rotation was going to be very important.

Our first game was against Glanmire from Premier 2. The hosts went into an early lead. We hadn’t played a football game since March so in took a while to get our touch back.  But once we settled we started to get into the game we started to create chances. At half time we were only two scores down. In the second half Glanmire pulled away and our lads just couldn’t catch them, as hard as they tired. Final score, Midleton 0:02 v Glanmire 1:07.
Next up was a game against Mallow from Premier 1. This was a game that started very quickly with Mallow going into an early lead and that was the way it remained. We tried to stay in the game, but they proved to be too strong. Final score Midleton 0:01 v Mallow 3:06.
Our next opponent was Na Piarsaigh who are also a Premier 1 team. Again, this game
followed a similar pattern. The lads tired their best but the quality from the Premier 1 team proved to be too strong. Final score Midleton 0:02 v Na Piarsaigh 3:04.
The final game was against Cobh. This was a game that was going to be much tighter than the previous three games, and so it proved. In the first half both teams exchanged scores, with Midleton scoring 1:03 to Cobh’s 2 goals. In the second half we continued to match each other’s scores. Going into the last minute we were a point down, but we couldn’t get the goal to win the match. The lads put in a great effort hitting the post and having a goal disallowed, but the goal or point just wouldn’t come. Final score Midleton 2:06 Cobh 4:01.

The players put in a great effort, playing four games in a row in very warm conditions. We also had two new additions to the panel today in Kamil and David Noack, they were both playing Gaelic football for the first time. We would like to thank all the parents for getting everyone to Glanmire and supporting us on the day. We also want to thank Susan Fitzgerald for providing all the Orange and water mellon slices. There wasn’t one slice left after the four matches’. While today was disappointing we have a chance to bounce back on Wednesday evening with a hurling match away to St. Finbarr’s.

Our panel for the day was, Mikey Finn, David Greene, Rian de Barra, Ben Kenneally, TJ Murphy, Tiarnan Roche, Michael Roe, Odhran Prenter, Brian O’Connell, Cathal Beausang, Sean Fraser, Dara Scanlon, Alex Moloney, Niall Lang, Tadhg Bohan, Tadgh O’Leary Hayes, Darragh Fitzgerald, Evan McGrath, Kamil Noack & David Noack.
Fionn Dalton and David Cremin missed out through illness and injury.

Fe 15
Premier 1 Rebel Og Hurling Championship Final v Douglas
Our hurlers contested the County Final at St Finbarr’s grounds in Togher on Thursday last. The opposition was Douglas and curiously enough this is the third year in a row that these two panels have emerged from opposite sides of the championship draw to play each other in the finals; U13 Midleton won (Midleton 1-12 Douglas 1-07), U14 Douglas won (Midleton 1-09, Douglas 2-09) and so the winner’s on the night would have bragging rights for the next 12-months. Our panel of twenty-seven (twenty-five on the age) were all available.
The game started at 7pm and we set the early pace. A strong run from Kelvin Barry who then passed the ball into Darragh McCarthy got us off the mark with their first point of the game. Evan Kelly added another point from play before Alex Quirke added two points from placed balls. Douglas then had a spell of dominance that our backline had to absorb. Brion Saunderson, Fintan Greenwood, Liam McGrath and Darragh Codd fought for every ball. Ciarmhac Smyth’s double block on a Douglas forward converging on goal captures the intensity of this spell of the game. Having weathered this period we finished out the half strongly with six points (five from play) one each from Kelvin Barry, Phelim Magann, Evan Kelly, Alex Quirke, Darragh McCarthy and finally David Cremin.
Half Time Score: Midleton 0-10 v Douglas 2-05.
All fifteen of the young Magpies started the second half very strongly. Evan Kelly scored a nice point from the right hand side of the field. Darragh McCarthy and David Cremin scored the next two points. Our defence were not yielding any possession to the Douglas forward line. Niall Corcoran and Darragh Codd were particularly prominent; Adam Fay’s influence on the game was growing. A three minute period midway through the second half was to prove decisive. Alex Quirke’s long range free ended up in the back of the Douglas net. David Cremin followed this with a point from play and within a minute the same player drove the ball to the Douglas net after a short solo run. We dominated the final quarter with points from Darragh McCarthy, Evan Kelly & Alex Quirke. Final Score: Midleton 2-17 v Douglas 2-10.
After the game the Fe 16 Cup was presented to the our captain Brion Saunderson on behalf of the panel.
Panel: Brion Saunderson, Evan McCarthy,  Fintan Greenwood, Niall Corcoran, Liam McGrath,  Ciarmhac Smyth, Darragh Codd, Alex Quirke (1-04 (1-04f), Adam Fay, Kelvin Barry (0-01), Darragh McCarthy (0-04), Mikey Finn, David Cremin (1-03), Phelim Magann (0-01),  Evan Kelly (0-04),  Craig Whyte, James Condon, Cian Murray, James O’Sullivan, Ben O’Neill, Rory Hartnett Neil Fitzgerald, Tomas Lambe, John Spellman, Roan Spillane, Shay Bohan & Daire Mooney.

Fe 16
Last Monday evening we made the journey to Church Road to face home team Blackrock in the first round of the Premier 1 County Hurling Championship. Not having played a league game up to this point we knew this would be a tough evening and so it proved.
In the first half we found it difficult to get going, struggling with first touch and the pace but defensively we were very sound and limited Blackrock to just a few shots at goal.
Half Time it was Blackrock 0-5 v Midleton 0-5.
The second half started pretty much the same way, both teams trading scores before Blackrock goaled. Our response was imminent as Darragh McCarthy made a great run and finished to the net. Ten minutes or so in we lost Jack Fitzgerald to a bad injury but this seemed to galvanise the lads and hit seven points without reply to move six clear. But Blackrock, who battled gamely all evening, got a few scores to close the gap. In the last few minutes we pulled away again and ended up winning on a scoreline of Blackrock 1-12 v Midleton 1-18.
All in all we were delighted with the second half display, scoring 1-13 in that period, with some well taken long range points. The subs made a huge impact when brought on and hopefully this will continue as all these guys continue to ask questions and make our job in selecting a very difficult but welcome problem. The second round is currently fixed for the 2nd of July at home to Ibane Gaels but will have confirmation on this in the weeks ahead. Also best wishes to Jack and hoping it will be a speedy recovery.
Team: Brion Saunderson, Ciarmhac Smyth, Charlie Walsh, Evan McCarthy, Gavin Reddy, Jack Fitzgerald, Dan Cagney, Patrick Kane, Alex Quirke (0-8, 7f), Leo Hennessy (0-2), Darragh Crowley (0-3, 1f), Paul Connaughton (0-1), Conor Fitzgerald (0-1), Ryan Cahill, Nicky Hayes (0-1). Subs Used: Darragh McCarthy (1-2), Luke Deane, Will O'Sullivan, James Condon, unsued Aaron Coughlan, Adam Faye, Chris Leahy & Evan Kelly.
